I don't know. The BMW was being pretty BMW-ish on that test.

Overheating, Breaking down etc.

The Triumphs sharp steering led to the "tail flipping out" and it seemed to want lots of revs, don't know whether that was the rider or what but that rear tire was complaining a lot.

and the KTM blitzed the day really.

Of course they will probably conclude that the S10 is not suited to off road and the BMW works really well, but at least it is on tape.

What Graham said, and as well, it seemed the Triumph's lack of throttle control was evident.

If that bike had the Yamaha OEM skid plate on it then I would have to say Yamaha made Yamaha look bad. Maybe now Yamaha will take notice.

Well I will say that the ST could use a couple of inches more ground clearance. And a bash plate should be standard...and not the flimsy POS that Yamaha sells.

Ktm wins in off road, bmw shows its problems, triumph shows its true colors and being mainly road, and the S10 failed because they had no skid plate and decided to go off road. How will mcn rate them?

Bmw first, ducati multistrada will make an appearance on road and place second, triumph, ktm, then the s10

I should clarify that I was thinking of the oem accessory skid plate, the aluminum one, in my comment above. However you may be right, there may have been just the plastic thing.

Looking closely while the guys are chatting about the "issue", I don't see ANY skidplate. My guess is they are trying to test stock bikes, and so the S10 didn't have one, even though any owner with half a brain, knowing they were going to do moderate to serious off-road, would have fitted one. I bet one of the drain plugs hit something, end of story...

MCN can say whatever they want and keep their magazine. They are a bunch of tools for taking out ST off-road with no bash plate. When I buy something I always want to make sure that the product I buy will do what I want it to do and if it does not, then I will sell it and get something else, reasonably of course. Last time I took St out to sand and swamp. This weekend it was enduro trail in CT that included ascending and descending via long rocky trails, rock sizes varying from tennis ball size to a soccer ball size all mixed together, lots of mud, lots of fun with big deep muddy puddles with dirt and rocks at the bottom. I run HB skid and I bashed it many times loud on the rocks, no issues. Also bashed HB kardan cover a few times and laid it down on the rocks once, altrider bars saved that radiator. Even spokes play the same tight tunes. A couple of ktm 250 guys and ATVs went by while we were on a brake, thought we were crazy taking out big bikes like that on this trail. So I got my own review, MCN, and hence don't care for your biased reviews.

What I got from that video was basically that a bunch of unprepared "journalists" abused and subsequintly broke several bikes that they didn't have to pay for themselves. Umm, right. Idiots.

Have they fallen out of love with the Multistrada 1200? It was their flavor of the week best bike for a while, they even had it ahead of the GS on their pub crawl test ride. And now being British, I would have expected that the Triumph would be their pick. Maybe it's just me, but single trails isn't a place I'd take any of these bikes, that's not why I have a SuperTen. What a bunch of clowns.

I'm actually a bit confused about why they were so reluctant to get down on their knees and SHOW us what actually happened to the sump. Would have been pretty easy, and relevant to the story? I see a steady stream of oil coming out near where the front drain plug would be - but without showing the damage, for all we know some dufous could have just forgotten to tighten the plug after an oil change.

For those who've seen the mag, are there any pics there that would shed some light?

what a group of testers huh? I would not loan these guy a felt tipped marker. It escapes me now which evaluation I saw on this site, but it comapred the 990, BMW and our Tenere, They gave the off road to the 990, the on road to the BMW, But they liked our bike because it filled the gap between the 2 much better, and there were actually several tests that came to the same conclusion. That sure helped me cement my decision.

Now back to these "testers" It amzes me how they can just get bike, not look at a thing, like no bash plate, and have a "hold my beer while I test this bike" attitude, Hell if that is the case, why not bring an R1 out there. The Tenere is price point, I was not willing to pay 18K for an bike that already has a bash plate that I was going to ride on the dirt. I will add the bash plate from ADV rider soon, IN THE MEAN TIME, I AM BEING CAREFUL! duh!!! I have a WR450 and I ride it like a stole it. The first thing I did was get the bash plate and other protective items. Treat any bike bad enough, and it will fail. I really do hate these magazine *SS holes. I truly doubt they would last too long in our world of real riding. They would either crash, get pulled over or wind up in jail. I ride hard and have a blast, but when a group of "seasoned testers" go out and do this, I would rather just do what I did to make my decision on my Tenere.

1. I read the Yamaha web information.
2. Googles forums- and I lurked without creating a username- and read what real owners have to say.
3. Once I decided the Tenere was a done deal, I decided on this forum. It seems to have the best balanced information.
4. Buy the darn bike and ride it! Funny I have had it 2 weeks and 2000 miles, and no broken parts!

What a fantastic way to make a living. Manufacturers give you their latest high tech, high dollar vehicles, then you go out and carelessly abuse the hell out of it like you don't care about the damage you do to it. I think it would be awesome to slam a bike into any conceivable situation because there are no consequences of any type if you completely destroy the bike. Cool.

Of course it has no relationship to real riders who must think and spend money to protect their bikes so they last more than a few hours. I'm sure it's fun running the piss out of property belonging to someone else. Doubt I'll ever have the chance to give it a try.

Basically there's no merit to this type of work. The review was a sham and a dis-service to interested people. Plus, there are limits to behavior, if this guy was my employee, he'd be answering questions.

The mag can make it up to the motorcycling public by doing a re-test because - Yes we really would like to hear some honest to goodness information about these motorcycles as a group.

I'd like to say more hilariously insulting things - I'll refrain for the good of mankind. O:)

they didnt bother to test the un outfitted BMW. Wonder why?
Well, it already broke before the test and overheated on the test.

Too hard for it carrying all that "unspecified" weight around.

That's enough isn't it? :p
