After hitting the deer, the first thing my wife heard me say over the bluetooth, "that one hurt." I wasn't talking about my person, I was talking about the damage to the bike.

Today I handed the title over to the insurance company. That was the final act of ownership of my Tenere.

It's just a bunch of metal, glass, plastic, and rubber, and I know it, but I'm sorry to see this one go more than any of the other 20+ bikes that went before it. After 40 months of ownership this bike has shown me more far away places than any other.

It took me to Newfoundland

and to Montana

...and many, many place in between. It has been to every Romney Camp N Ride, and has been an absolute fantastic bike.

Yes, it's only an object., and the truth is, I never cared for the color (sorry guys), but it has taken me on the best rides of my life.

It will always hold a honored position in my memory as a fantastic ride.

Wow - End of an era.
So are you spilling what's next yet? Do we need to call Larry to find out?

I've talked to Larry a lot in the last 10 days. Not taking any immediate action. I'm down here with Spklbuk and crew for this weekend. I'm supposed to pick up a DL650 to exercise it for Whistler (stromtrooper) as he is rehabbing from his surgeries. I will have Dirt_Mom's Tenere to ride. So I'm not hurting for something to ride.

We'll see if I'm disciplined enough to wait until better incentives come out as the '16 models are about to be released. The insurance settlement was significant, and sometime within the next 3 weeks to 3 months there will be a new ES in the barn.

Well, you definitely got your money's worth out of the first one. Glad you're staying with Team Tenere! That says a lot about the bike.

What was the damage that put it over the top, or was it just death by a thousand cuts?

There are $1500 in incentives on 15 ES's right now, DD. Might get better, might not, as Yamaha is keeping better control of inventory than they did a couple years ago. Best of luck to you on getting a new ES.

I know on Saturday there was $1000 on a non-ES and only $500 on the 2015 ES model. Did something change since then? I definitely could not hold out waiting for more at $1500.

Staying Team Tenere is a true no brainer for me. There are other bikes that impress me for one reason or another. The Multistrada is a stunning example of an Adventure bike. The KTM Adventure R is a true blast to ride. If it were reliable I might be able to overlook the chain (maybe). It really does make the Tenere seem slow and portly. But I have to spend my money, and own and maintain the bike. That quickly rules out both of those bikes.

My Tenere ownership experience has been fantastic. It has been inexpensive to own and is reliable as a hammer. Add to that the fact I just slammed into a deer at 75 MPH, totaled the bike in the process, and it never went down. The stability of the Tenere a huge factor in my next purchase. I rode a Tenere in Hurricane Irene as it was hitting into Vermont. Such an amazing bike that can hit the deer, stay up, ride in a hurricane, stay up, yet turn down just about any stretch of dirt you want and have fun doing it. Getting another Tenere...a true no brainer.

What put it over the top with the insurance company was the crack in the weld on the frame from the radiator getting ripped from the mount. As I've been told by both Romney and now the insurance company, any damage to the frame and the frame must be replaced. Most cases that will be a total.

Tell the truth D_D. After riding Chris's new Tenere at Romney you secretly aimed for the deer, knowing the old black bike would protect you to the bitter end. You're just a Bambi Killer for your own inner desires.

As of June 1 there is an additional $1,000 available. I'll send you a PM with the details.

Riding Chris' bike did make an impression one me. I don't believe the interest was enough to get me to aim for a deer. I was thinking I would most likely have picked up an ES next year. The deer definitely expedited the plans.

Hope you will have yourself a shiny, new S10 soon - in a color you will love! ::003::

Chris

Ps: on my way back from CO. What an amazing!!!!! Trip. A little footnote - I saw no other Teneres on this entire trip. Lots of VStroms and beemers, however. We are quite the exclusive club!

It looks great in red! In KS now and the winds here are awful. It's also hot as hell. Thanks again for all your excellent tips for this trip.

Dirt_Dad:

Sorry to hear you lost your S10 to a deer. Still, it could have been worse. At least you guys made it through! Still, I swear to you though, that I will exact significant revenge for you upon Bambi during the upcoming bowseason.

Hope you end up with a red one. They look awesome and the red helps keep the deer away. The red ones hold more camping gear than Black or White or Silver anyway (holds the same amount as Blue though apparently). Here is proof from last weekend, something to look at until you get yours:

You gonna get yours from Frederick Yamaha or Romney? Frederick Yamaha had a Red Non-ES earlier this year. Don't ask me how I know.
