T mode is a wonderful thing for riding in the rain, in heavy stop& go traffic commuting, not knocking helmets when 2-up, off-road on a muddy surface, etc.

Just like TCS is wonderful on the road, but I am glad to be able to turn it down or off when off-road.
Another reason for flashing is being able to tailor the riding modes.

When I flashed mine I changed T-Mode a lot:
- full power at full throttle, Stock is max 70%
- changed the throttle progression, ramps up slowly to 50% and then is pretty much linear to 100%
- engine braking almost disabled

This gives very smooth relaxed riding but access to full power if needed.

My S-Mode is 1:1 throttle by wire

Wow, 138 MPH, not counting speedometer error. Funny if this were 20 years ago the Super Tenere would be considered a horsepower monster!

Defekticon, actually I thought it *was* designed to be a touring bike. When it first came out, Yamaha was touting the fact that the bike offered "all day" comfortable touring ergos and was specifically engineered to handle the twisties in the mountains.
It is a bike that is extremely capable of long distance touring BUT it is designed and built to be able to do real adventure riding. As a result it is built for torque and ability to operate at low speeds. It has a strong bottom end and mid range but will not blow the doors off too much at the upper end of the range.

The BMW WC GS is both lighter and faster and it is noticeable, but at higher speeds (80+) it produces a lot of vibration while the 2nd Gen Tenere is very smooth. If the extent of your riding is no worse than gravel or roads under construction all these mounts will do. If shaft drive is important than the super high performers will be removed from the list. If you are open to chain drive the KTM has the broadest capabilities and a monster of a motor. The KTM 1290SA is a blast to ride. The Ducati Multi and BMW S1000XR will also handle the crappy roads but are really street bikes that can do a little extra.

I personally felt the Super Tenere ES was a tad heavy and could use more power but I do not do any real adventure riding. I like the top end rush and bikes like the KTM and S1000XR appeal to me the most.

It all depends on what you are looking for and what you want out of the bike. Another bike to consider is the Honda Crosstourer that is coming to the states this year. It is missing some of the amenities like cruise control but it has a very strong motor and shaft drive.

Test ride as many as you can and see how it goes.

"Enough power" is a strange size. I have ridden both stronger bikes that felt under power and weaker ones that didn't. For me it depends on if the power suit the bike and the kind of riding I'm using it for.
I find that the power and how it's delivered is spot on for the S10 when doing the kind of riding it was build for.

Actually, I was considering the Honda Crosstourer. I know that it is not as capable offroad as an S10 or KTM, but it seemed to tick off all of the important items for me:

Smooth, Powerfual Engine. It's a V4 engine that is powerful and smooth as silk (borrowed from the VFR1200), It puts out 129 HP at 7,750 RPM and 93 lb-ft torque at 6,500 RPM.
Low Maintenance Shaft Drive
capability of traversing gravel/dirt roads
low seat option (830mm = 32.68 inches), in addition, the seat has a narrow profile so it is easier to reach the ground.
..and it's not a bad looking bike either.

but there were some things that I didn't like about it:

no cruise control (Seriously, Honda?? it's ride by wire so no reason to forget cruise control)
Fuel tank only holds 5.68 gallons (kinda wished it was at least 7 gallons because that V4 is thirsty)
definitely not as capable as the S10 offroad

Anyway, Honda almost hit it squarely on the head with this offering, but I'm afraid it's not quite the machine that the S10 is...

I think Standard T-Mode gives full power in 5th and top on early bikes, dunno about Gen2, I have dyno graphs of Gen1 T mode and it gives a bit more power in each gear until 4th and then full power in 5th / top, the graphs I have show about @60BHP in 3rd and @70 in top with about @90 in top.

I too went with 1:1 throttle for S Mode on remap - pretty much like a bike running a cable, I went with a milder response for T-Mode but with the same map in every gear so full power still available, difference is far more subtle now and T-Mode is actually useable, I never used it before but now often switch to it around town or when riding along narrow lanes or on gravel

I've only been riding a few years and have only owned 2 bikes. My first was a 650 Vstrom and now I have the Tenere. To me, the Tenere was a big jump in power over the Vstrom however, I got used to it quickly. This led me to wonder if the Tenere is indeed a relatively slow bike in comparison to it's peers.

A few months back, the local BMW, Ducati dealership had a demo day. I went down and rode some bikes. I rode the R1200GSA, the S1000XR, the Triumph Explorer, and the Triumph Tiger. Now keep in mind this. The demo leader guy allowed us to ride these bikes hard. I suppose they wanted us to see the true potential of the bikes rather than some lazy ride to play with the gadgets.

My opinion is this. The only bike that felt obviously faster than the Tenere was the S1000XR. Being honest, the S1000XR didn't blow my socks off either. I think it's because the rider aids were turned on keeping the thing from unleashing it's true fury.

I don't know if the Tenere is under powered or not. I know sometimes it feels a bit lethargic especially in 2nd gear. Other times though it feels way faster than I can ride it. I do know that after riding the competition it feels comparable to them.

I think that is a very accurate description of the vfr1200x! I have a V4 in my Venture Royale and absolutely love its silky smoothness and power.

thanks for the headsup on the kaoko. I was actually looking at a servo type cruise control as well. http://www.mccruise.com/collections/honda/products/honda-vfr1200x-crosstourer

Gregp, thanks for posting your experiences. it's interesting that you didn't find the R1200 significantly faster than the S10. I have heard that the water-cooled R1200's are "punchier" than the S10. In general, I like the Xr1000, but not for touring. I didn't like the chain driver and the small gas tank (range of about 140-150 miles).

If shaft drive is important the S10 is not quite as underpowered, the opposition is then the LC GS / Crossrunner / Explorer which are only 10 - 15 BHP up, and all of similar weight.

The last of the Aircooled GS models had about the same power, but when I tested the GS and S10 back to back the GS felt quicker despite almost identical performance due to the peakier nature of the power delivery which had a noticeable step at about 4500rpm and it was bit more eager to pull up to the redline.

The Tenere is not a race bike, and has power Harley owners can only dream of, so I am not sure why people would complain.
It will pull my arms when I accelerate, I can do fishtails all day long on the dirt, and easily chew up Montana passes while loaded down two up, what more do I need?

Is more power on the KTM or BMW appealing? Maybe to some, however you are not going to be racing them, will just be cruising normal so for me the extra power is only a nonsense selling point.

I agree with Shrek however there have been a few things that bugged me personally. First is the bike sounds like a sewing machine when riding which I know many prefer it quiet. Second was the flat power delivery I felt, which with normal riding was fine, but when you pass a slow vehicle it seemed a bit lethargic.
I think I fixed both this winter with the install of my Arrow headers and two brothers slip on. Nice sound when easy on the throttle and if you grab a handful it cracks. I rode an hour yesterday and 0 - 1xx response is much better.

Maverick, there's a lot that went into my impressions. It was a demo ride so I only got to ride the bike for about 20 minutes. The bike was new to me so there was some apprehension about just how hard to press it. I'm a newish rider and so on... The R1200GSA was indeed a quick bike. It got where it needed to go without hesitation but so does the Tenere. In other words, they felt similar enough to me. I never felt a "holy crap this thing's fast" moment like I did on the S1000XR.

As to the S1000XR, I couldn't use it as a touring bike either. I'm 6'3" and it just felt too cramped to stay on it long. If I could raise the seat and lower the pegs like I did with my Vstrom, then maybe. It would also need a larger wind screen too as the one provided offered little protection from the wind blast. All that being said, I'd love to own one as daily commuter and around town bike. It is a total blast to ride!

To be fair I have never even heard a Tenere in Person which was stock, mine came with aftermarket exhaust as well so has a nice note, I defiantly would not want anything louder, I am good with quiet :p
It also came with the jumper mod done as well as a PC (Demo Bike) I will probably be removing the jumper mod as it is my understanding (possibly wrong) it is not good for the bike, possibly it is a bit flat completely stock, I dono, however the Honda F4 was supposed to be flat and boring, but I loved it.
