For those interested in doing a south from Romney ride on the Mid-Atlantic Back-Country Discovery Route (MABDR), I've now had a chance to check that direction from Rt 50 down to Rt 33. Which is probably close to how far people are likely to go on an out and back ride from the dealership.

The overwhelming part of the 50 to 33 ride is pavement. In fact, only the last 12 miles has any dirt. The northern part of this route is generically nice. I enjoyed it, but can't say it's much different from any of the other routes that have been published for this event.

The next significant section is Smoke Hole Road. If you haven't done it, this road is always a treat. Unfortunately Smokey Bear was right today.

Sometime between 8:00am this morning and when I arrived at noon the mountain had caught on fire in several locations. You could see and smell the smoke through the valley. Despite the road's name, this was a first time experience for me seeing any smoke around here.

There were fire crews along the road and a helicopter in the air. Also a number of Forest Service fire trucks speeding up and taking up most of the road.

Certainly hoping they get this one put out quickly. Unfortunately I doubt the constant wind was any help. All the activity on the road did force me to slow down and really look around more than usual. Smoke Hole Road is a beautiful road with beautiful streams.

By the time we're in Romney in about a month the leaves should be on the trees making this an even more beautiful sight. Always recommended.

Next on the MABDR was Siple Mountain Road. Lovely valley that was a nice ride on some fairly rough pavement.

Not terrible, but not smooth.

Finally the last section 12 miles north of 33 starts with a cattle guard crossing. When I arrived there were 6 dual sports surrounding a woman on an ATV. The dual sport guys told me the road was fantastic and then headed on their way, leaving me with the ATV woman. She proceeded to tell me all about the road ahead and the 6 (easy) water crossings. She offered directions and if I needed any food or water she pointed to her house. She told me she heard the dual sport guys coming and went out to intercept them to see if they needed anything. Very kind woman who wanted nothing more than to see if she could assist people riding near her house. The people of West Virginia are awesome, and it is a real pleasure to meet them along the way.

That last 12 miles was the first section of MABDR from southern PA to here that has challenge to it.

I do NOT want to overstate the challenge. It's up and down mountains with fairly wide switchbacks, and in the lower sections you'll find tiny water crossings. This was the biggest crossing I found on the ride today.

All of them were no more than 6 to 9 inches deep and you could see the bottom as you rode through them. Overall this was a nice forest road that is not as tame as the ones through MD and southern PA.

If you're looking for a pretty easy ride, with some interesting dirt, then heading south on the MABDR is worth considering. If you want to increase the dirt fun, after getting to Rt 33 turn right, at Senaca Rock stay left on 33 just a short distance to a right turn on Smith Mountain Road. Make sure to close the cattle gates behind you as your ride. When you get back to Rt28/55 turn left for a short ride to turn off for Dolly Sods. Head across Dolly Sods on your way back to Romney.

Rumors are my new T7 will be arriving at Romney Cycles just days before the event. I already have dibs on it, but you guys know I'll let Yaw all take it for a spin.

Gonna be epic!

SHIRTS - SHIRTS - SHIRTS

Here's the call to order a shirt for this year's event and you can pm me your order, just like every other year.
Trying to suck up sales from the Strom people who usually get no love, we have a Strom on the front. ;D Obviously, Stroms can't wheelie, so it must be more magic from Inhouse Bob, who makes them for us.
;)
FRONT:

BACK:

$17 for short sleeve
$20 for long sleeve

Again, In-House Bob is making them and these are top quality shirts, like in previous years. Anything extra from the shirts will of course go to the Potomac Center. They do good things and the grass most of us will sleep on is theirs.

To order, send me a personal message (pm) to ask for my email address. We use PayPal only as payment till we get to Romney.
In your pm MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE:
(1) SIZE for each shirt
(2) LONG SLEEVE or SHORT,
(3) YOUR REAL NAME TO TIE TO THE AVATAR NAME.
(4) How much you are adding for the charity if you are doing so.
(The donation is totally optional and up to you. The amount is usually clear from how much people send, but it can get goofy when people order more than one shirt with combinations of sleeve lengths.)

I'll send you my email address and you send your PayPal payment to it. When I see the size(s) you want in your email and the money is received, I'll send you a confirmation email. We don't yet have a hard cut off date for ordering yet, but it won't be long this year, since I have been tied up with work.

Bob usually makes a few extra shirts for walk-up people who miss this pre-order. Those go really fast and we don't want to pay for unsold shirts so there aren't many, but for the first people to arrive there may be a chance to score one. To keep things simple, they'll be $25 in cash. Again, everything we take in beyond the expense of having the shirts printed will go to the charity.

ALL SHIRTS WILL BE PICKUP ONLY and I plan to arrive with them on Thursday evening. If you pay for a shirt, are a no-show at the event, and pm me then we MIGHT-possibly-maybe be able to sell your shirt to get your money back to you. Or hopefully, you could pm to tell me to sell it to somebody else and you donate your $15 or $17 to the Potomac Center charity. With last year's rain-out, we donated the left-over shirts to the kids and I can personally tell you that they enjoyed them. Here were a few when we gave their Director a check:

If I don't see you or hear from you, then after the event expect a pm to ask if you want to send an additional $6 for postage in the US or $10 for Canada and I'll mail it. Just think, you could wear it to next year's 8th Annual Camp-N-Ride and nobody will be any the wiser.

[Legalese - The artwork is fairly locked down but it's possible that some details may change slightly.)

I think that's it, but feel free to post or pm with your questions.

I've got a bunch of emails for shirts and will respond tonight. For those who have my email from last year and want to just send their money and order, please make sure you include your forum name. PayPal will just show your email if you don't put your forum name in the comments box. Then I'm left guessing at who the heck "John Smith" is.Thanks all!

Hope to be there for the first time this year, possibly with a riding partner. Got the time off, so far. Now to work on the other arrangements, camping gear, etc.

You've been to as many of these as I have (all of them). Wouldn't be right to hold one without you.

I think I'm caught up on responding to pm's and sending receipts for shirt payments. If you want a shirt and I've not responded, pm me or post up!

how big a PITA would it be for me to PP you and get me a shirt? Large......just like me.

I sent you a pm saying to take a wag at postage to add to the price and just include it in the PayPal. You already have my email.
It may be after we get back that I get a chance to put it in the mail.

You gotta either make him drive or wait for it.
We're talking Patrick, right?

Some minor form of torture is undoubtedly called for.

Thought I’d give this a try, wondering if anyone from the north end is interested in riding the MABDR down to Romney?
