In anticipation of my 7 day, 4000 mile round trip to Seattle (actually Maple Valley, WA), leaving tomorrow, I have been testing a few things out to make the trip more comfortable.

Like many here I have struggled with what I believed to be an uncomfortable seat and seriously considered buying one of the expensive aftermarket jobs.

Since I was going to be traveling a long distance and 500 miles a day I wanted to pack light and wear protective gear as much as possible. So I tested a few combinations.

What I have found was that the briefs made by the outdoor company Ex Officio, combined with my Olympia riding pants, has solved the problem with discomfort. The combination has none of the seams that my jeans and regular briefs have which in combination cause the chaffing that I had attributed to the seat.

So riding is no longer a PITA ::025::

If you see a blue heading West from Arkansas...it's me.

Those are some good tips and reinforce that seat comfort is truly an individual preference. I went with a seat concepts seat early on and felt it was $$ well spent, but seamless undies are good too.

You'll have everything sorted with your steed and be back in plenty of time for the Tenere rally this October, right in your backyard ;)

I like my seat!
More comfortable than the DL1000 I use to ride.

There ain't no IRON in iron butt if you don't test your bum!

Re: Sore Butt

Bicycle shorts can add a decent layer of comfort. For me, they're magic and I have zero issues with the stock seat but my max is about 450 miles in a day. There are a lot of purpose built motorcycle shorts (see Aerostich et al) now too. Have a great trip.

Re: Sore Butt

I've done a few 1500mile days on my Tenere - and a few other bikes, come to think of it....

My 2c tip: irrespective of what you wear and what seat you have, simply stand up on the pegs every now and then. I do a set of exercises every 30 minutes on the bike, but standing and stretching is the main focus.

Re: Sore Butt

Three reasonably easy things (in addition to standing on pegs regularly):

1. The right underwear: Jockey Active Mesh boxers have no seams and a mesh center panel. They work and beat the pants off of cotton underwear or regular boxers...

2. Kooky as it sounds, this:

It's invaluable, and I won't cycle--or do a long motorbike ride--without it. Genuinely protects your butt and prevents chafing.

3. Finally, sheepskin:

You can just use any old piece to sit on (but make sure it's secured somehow), or get one of these...

Re: Sore Butt/Memory foam....

A resonable solution...have the stock foam cut down an inch...add one inch of memory foam, replace the original seat cover...and see how that works. I have had this done for a lot of my bikes and have found it to be a great fix. You could do it yourself.
Take of the cover, buy the memory foam, cut it, glue it, and then you are done.
I have had many 18 hour days on my bikes...the seat did the job. I would do this before you invest a lot in a new seat. The memory foam takes out a lot of vibration and fits your butt. I only have skin-over-bone for a butt and it has been a godsend. Memory foam is the same thing people, with wheel chairs, use. Give it a shot. Let me know what you think

Re: Sore Butt

Walmart carries an Atv gel seat pad which many find wonderful, sheepskin is also popular.

Proper shorts, bicycle shorts with padding preferable, & baby powder to keep the burn away!

Re: Sore Butt

I've never found denim jeans to be comfortable for riding as they are not cut properly for the riding position.
I wear padded bicycle shorts under perforated leathers most of the time and that works well.
Same shorts under Klim off road pants with added knee and hip protection for hotter weather.
Anti Monkey butt powder with calamine works very well.
All on the stock seat. Up to 700 mile days not a problem.

Re: Sore Butt

LDComfort and Russel Day Long. I rode to Shasta to get my seat made and will never use another. Funny that all the top seat makers are in the Shasta/Redding area. Something in the blood or water I guess.

I tend to ride byways if I can and anytime I pass a reduced speed ahead sign I stand up as I slow down entering the town. If I get the right vibe, I will continue to stand through the tiny towns until the speed limit goes back up. Works well.

Made it back in one piece from Washington State to NW Arkansas, 4000 mi, 8 days. Lots of variations in temperatures - 52-100 degrees, rain, 40 mph crosswinds. Was surprised when the oil light came on halfway through the trip, have never had a Yamaha use oil between oil changes. Asked a yamaha dealer about it and he said that he had heard that the Tenere uses a bit of oil - anyone else experience this? Overall I was very pleased with the way the bike managed the various weather elements and terrains. Last day i decided to ride 900 miles - Laramie WY to NW Arkansas in the same day. Butt hurt that day :). i posted a few pics under the photo gallery. Cheers!

Congratulations on your trip, I would honestly think the oil consumption is a reason for concern, it is after all not a KLR ::013::

Any idea where your oil level was before you left for the trip?
Since my break-in service (700 miles), over the subsequent 1,300 miles, the oil level is down about 1/8 from where it was in the sight glass.

I had just changed my oil (myself) so I believe it was properly full, as measured on the center stand per the book.

Maybe sheepskin on top of gel would help, but I hate the way gel holds heat. Not a fan of that at all.
