Slight oil leak from RHS engine casing

Hi
I have a light oil leak from underneath the right hand side engine casing (the one with the oil filler plug).
I would like to fit a new gasket myself but wondered how easy this cover comes off, do any bits drop out or does it just expose the internals, is it a simple job of removing the cover, new gasket and re-fit?

Thanks

Gasket is very easy to replace, no parts will fall out. Just make sure all the old gasket material is cleaned off of the cover, and case. The manual does show a torque sequence for the bolts, as well as a spec. Curious about your leak though. What year, miles, has the cover been off before? Research the dowel pin issue, and make sure it's not that causing the leak. Also, if the bike is really new, with low miles, I've seen these gaskets weep, and later they will stop. The new engine weep of the cover gaskets isn't really a leak, meaning, no drips on the ground, just a slight wetness to the surface, and I would just watch it for a while.

Hi
It's a 2011 model with 24k miles.
I have a few oil drips on my boot when I did some long motorway runs in France sitting at 80Mph for a few hours beween fill ups.

Ok, so looks like dowel '5' needs a bit shaving off from what I have read, think I'll wait until the next oil change as it's only a slight misting that is highlighted by the amount of dirt that was on the bike.

Yea... its the pin... you don't need to drain the oil to take the cover off, just put it up on the center stand. Take 1-2mm off..

ok ta.
I have emailed a contact within Yamaha asking if they have shorted the pins on later models as it seems a fairly common issue, I'd rather swap it out than file it down.

What is the purpose of this pin?
My 2012 has it flush into the cover.

I believe they just act as alignment dowels to align the cover on the engine. Was yours ever repaired for the dowel issue? Sounds like it was shortened a bit too much.

My bike suffered this at 12000 miles. Yamaha replaced the side cover and dowels under warranty. What you must not do is try to tighten the set screws to compensate for the leak. This will create a hairline crack in the casing and perpetuates the leak.

Yea, Yamaha Tech have acknowledged the issue and will replace the side casing, not sure what the cost will be as mine is out of warranty.
