As Git Ray said, the nipples are a Yamaha one of..
My point was the ss nipples are not available yet. The nickle and brass will corrode the same as nickle and steel, and I would be left with two parts that are not the same.

Not trying to be difficult here.. :D, but if I spend the money to re spoke my wheels, I want them the same.. ;)

:D and I thought "I" was anal!!! :D

Not a problem, though...galvanic action/electrolysis, is the culprit. The closer together on the galvanic scale the metals are..... the less corrosion or electrolysis will occur.

The list:

• MAGNESIUM
• MAGNESIUM ALLOYS
• ZINC
• ALUMINUM 5052, 3004, 3003, 1100, 6053
• CADMIUM
• ALUMINUM 2117, 2017, 2024
• MILD STEEL (1018), WROUGHT IRON
• CAST IRON, LOW ALLOY HIGH STRENGTH STEEL
• CHROME IRON (ACTIVE)
• STAINLESS STEEL, 430 SERIES (ACTIVE)

• 316, 317, STAINLESS STEEL (ACTIVE)
• CARPENTER 20 CB-3 STAINLESS (ACTIVE)
• ALUMINUM BRONZE (CA 687)
• HASTELLOY C (ACTIVE) INCONEL 625 (ACTIVE) TITANIUM (ACTIVE)

• 316, 317, STAINLESS STEEL (PASSIVE)
• CARPENTER 20 CB-3 STAINLESS (PASSIVE), INCOLOY 825
• NICKEL - MOLYBDEUM - CHROMIUM - IRON ALLOY (PASSIVE)
• SILVER
• TITANIUM (PASS.) HASTELLOY C & C276 (PASSIVE), INCONEL 625(PASS.)
• GRAPHITE
• ZIRCONIUM
• GOLD
• PLATINUM
PROTECTED END (CATHODIC OR MOST NOBLE)

Nickle and stainless are very close on the scale, so very little corrosion. Nickle or stainless(both cathodic) and aluminum(anodic) are far apart, so aluminum being the anode, it will lose ions and thus corrode and the nickle or stainless will not.

However, to put a spin on it. As you notice on the list, not all stainless is the same, nor aluminum, so you must know exactly what metal you're dealing with before deciding how they will react to each other, and how fast.

Not trying to be a wise guy, just share "verifiable" info.

IMHO, nickle plate brass nipples would probably outlast the bike, particularly if you plan on painting the rims. And look just as good.

All that being said, having both nipples and spokes in stainless would polish up nicely, if that's what you're looking for.

:)) Yes I can be anal at times :)..
Thanks for the good info, and no I don't think your a wise guy.. Sometimes, on the internet, it is hard to discuss a viewpoint. That is why I use icons. ;D

I use icons more and more. People seem to understand them a bit better (a comic book culture, perhaps? :-\)

Keep me updated on the stainless nipples and what you find out. I'd use them if they were available.

If I do this paint stripping, I'll wait until a new tire change and do the SS spokes, paint strip and clear coat all at the same time (and 83 degree stems). I don't think this mod will cost a huge amount as all but the spoke cost should be able to be done oneself (or if I can talk justbob into helping would be easier ::) ).

Just got back from looking at Rod's new ST and took a very close look at the black rims.

It's my opinion that they are not painted, but anodized. I wasn't about to use my pocket knife to find out for sure. Can't figure out why he got so excited when I got the knife out. Geesh! ???

Anyone willing to scrape the rim to find out? ;) Yeah, me neither.

I'll be looking to find a factory silver set, maybe a trade, but that wouldn't seem likely. Maybe buy new. We'll see.

Bicycles (high end ones also) have use SS spokes with Brass Nipples (nickle plated) since forever...
