Hmmm... So do you still have your previous purchased unacceptable seats? I was wondering IF you might be willing to ship me one... I'll pay for the shipping. If I like it I'll buy it... IF not I'll ship it back. This way you are not out a penny and may sell it. I assume we would have to agree on a price and a term of test.
It's just a thought.

As you can see by the variance in posts, there are certainly pro's and con's to every seat manufacture out there. As for myself, I already shelled out over 300.00 with what I have tried so far. Now I am paying out about 600.00 for comfort. I don't care about looks any longer, I just want a nice comfortable ride on long tours. You can keep shoveling out your hard earned money like I did, or just invest in something with a money back and lifetime guarantee. As for myself, I am willing to try the RDL out. If I don't like it, they will provide a 100% money back guarantee after two minor adjustments. Sounds like a safe bet in my opinion.

Hey Brick,

Unfortunately, my production date for my RDL isn't until July 29th. Also, they will need my stock seat pan for the new seat. Otherwise, I would be happy to have worked something out with you. I would be willing to let you borrow my Airhawk seat when my new seat is finished . Still, I need it for another two months. Otherwise, my butt will be hurting.

Sorry I couldn't accommodate this time.

Let me start with the statement that I am a 220 lb. guy with a bony skinny butt. I find it hard to find a comfortable seat. I have ended up with several Russell seats that I liked on other bikes.

Of the off the shelf seats I have tried Corbin and Sargent on other bikes. Hated Corbin and liked Sargent better than stock.

I hated the stock seat. I tried a Seat Concepts seat first and it was much better but still not a long distance seat. Then I tried a Seth Liam seat and it was better than Seat Concepts. The Seth Liam seat is good for 200-250 mile days. I had a Seth Liam passenger seat made and it did not work even after a refit. I now have a Russell seat and use this for any trips over 200 miles. The Russell is good for longer than I want to ride. The Russell seat is tall and maybe, sorta, kinda ugly. However the bucket shape is what makes it comfortable.

My wife has a Seth Liam seat on her BMW R1100RS and it is very nice.

I ride almost everyday with the bike as my primary transportation. I use the Russell seat for long trips and the Liam seat for every day riding. I commute

Ok, my experiences with a 2012 and then a 2014. First off, I had the stock sandpaper type cover removed and replaced with a smooth cover that wasn't so irritating. I found that with the gripper cover, my pants wouldn't move during braking or acceleration, but everything inside them would move and after a bit I was pretty uncomfortable. At least the smooth cover on the OEM seat helped that problem. Then I sent a stock seat to Sargent and had them redo it with their foam and a new cover and they levelled it out a bit. That was better than the original. When they came out with their World Sport seat for the S10, I got one of the first ones. Unlike the World Sport seats I had on my Super Hawk and KLR, which were wonderful, this one was very hard and uncomfortable, so I returned it. Then they came out with a revised World Sport seat, so i tried that. Perhaps it was a little better, but not much. Then I tried a Corbin, rode it about 50 miles and ended up with sore nuts from that hump in the front. Sold it the next day. Sent a seat to Seth Laam and on the second try, it was very good. Then one day, I traded bikes with a fellow S10 owner, William42 and liked his RDL even better than my Laam. I got in on a RDL winter sale promotion and had one made. I thought it was pretty good, but didn't like the added height. When I compared it to William's RDL, I could see that his wasn't as high and was more comfortable. I called RDL and told them I wanted mine redone like William's. They looked up his file and said his was a sport version, so that is what I had them do for me. It is much better for me and I like it a lot. I never think about seat discomfort on trips, as the sport RDL is perfect for me. The Laam is a very good seat and worth the money, but the RDL is better, although at a higher cost. The Corbin was the worst and the Sargent was second worst. I am now satisfied and no longer in the market for a different seat.

Like the ongoing windsheild debate (!) the seat is similar in that its a case of finding whatever works for you.
I had no problem with the standard windsheild and seat untill a 2100 mile trip over 4 days up and over the Alps and back. The difference of being in the saddle for 3 hours to then 11 hours is shocking.
The standard seat felt like it had no cushioning and caused blisters on my thighs from the stitching on a pressure point (very bad design).
So i came on here and had a look and the American market has distinct favourites where the UK seems to favour others.
After doing some online research i settled on the Touratec Comfort seat.
Lots of you slag the Touratec off for being to expensive and some saying its to uncomftable etc. But it works for me.
Re profiled, stiffer cushioning (which works great over long periods) and the stitching moved away from a chafe point.

I do think that , like the windsheild, its a bit of a minefield to find what works for you as there is a large choice out there.

first up let me say I don't find the stock seat that terrible. I tossed a sheepskin over it that I had from Aerostich and took it on a 5,000 mile trip within the first month of ownership, no problem. That said w/o the sheep skin (I only fool with that sort of thing while on tour) I don't like it as much and I never really cared for the texture or look either. I'm going to be setting off on another 5K trip in a month or so and I realized that of the 4 bikes I own, only the S10 has a stock seat (which is kind of stupid as it's the one I go cross country on). I had put a Seat Concepts seat on my Bonnville over the winter & felt it to be a massive improvement (taller, better padding) so I took a look at what they might have for the S10. 'Turns out for $250 including shipping I can get a front seat re-foam & cover (taller, wider, better padding & better cover) along with the matching cover for the rear so I ordered it. I have not gotten it yet and for that money you have to install it (they will do it for a fee) but given the experience on the Bonnie I expect I will be worthwhile, I'll try to let you know once it's on. Pretty sure for double that you can likely get a custom seat that feels even nicer but as my issue was minor this seemed to be a good compromise. The thing with seats tho is this: my nectar might be your poison, no two butts are the same. The only real way to know is to spend a 10 hour day on one.

It is a very personal thing as has been said,

cyclists use the gel padded shorts and there are more aimed at us now (moto-skiveez over here for one), they certainly make the saddle more bearable for me (but not perfect), I did have the air cushion thing but in rain it became a personal bum puddle

and the padded shorts improve the look of my back end if the missus is to be believed !!

In defense of the seats... if your ass (and body) are in shape you are more likely to find most seats comfortable. Your posture (how you sit on the motorcycle) also has a lot to do with seat comfort.

Ps - surprisingly I find the OEM Low Seat comfortable especially during rough road and tight twisty riding. It is not that good for longer multi-day rides and my out of shape ass.

One thing I like about the S10 is the seating position. Upright posture, but I find it has nothing to do with how my ass feels after a few hours in that seat!

I stare at a computer screen all day at work, I raised my desk so I can stand at it, but have a tall chair if I want to sit that allows good posture too.
I can sit on it almost all day with little discomfort compared to the S10. It is larger and softer seat..........................................I think I just figured out what to try next!!! ::013::

This.

$325 and better than anything off the shelf. I am not a Corbin hater; I've had several that were very good. I have one for my Tenere, and it's not good...too soft. I know, when do you ever hear that about a Corbin?! I don't get it either, but it is what it is. This is what I'm rockin' now...

So we must assume that that is a Liam (so?) seat?

I'm a big guy (250 lbs) with a skinny butt. Seat pain was the #1 limiting factor in how long I could ride on all the bikes I've ever had. On my Tenere I have the Seat Concepts with lowering rubber bumpers installed and it was good for up to 2-3 hours but then things would start hurting. I added an AirHawk and a BeadRider and those helped but I wanted all-day comfort. So I splurged on myself and finally bought a Russell Day-Long Seat. Mine has vinyl sides and Sunbrella top surface. I sent in the photos they ask for showing my riding position and explained that I often move around on the seat, especially moving back. I also tend to set farther back than many folks.

They built me a great seat and actually accommodated my preferences for ride position. I can tell by comparing the difference in the back part of my seat with the others pictured on their site. I can also report that the heated seat addition is pure luxury. It heats up quickly and warms your butt and upper legs. There is a lot of blood flowing through that part of the body down to your feet and toes, both of which are now warmer thanks to the heating option.

I've used Sunbrella covers on boats and it survives outside exposure for years. I really like the color and think it looks great on the bike. I will keep my BeadRider as it's so good at promoting air flow under your butt in the summer but have no more need for the AirHawk. I'm 100% happy that I did this finally. If/when I ever sell my Tenere, I'll put the old seat back on and I bet I get 1/2 of my initial cost back selling the Russell seat here on the forum. I purchased an OEM seat on eBay and sent that in to Russell so now I have two seats.

so I got the Seat Concepts seat and I stalled it on the pan yesterday. 'Nice: a little higher, a little wider and much better foam:

that would be the embossed cover with black sides, 'much better than stock as well. I went with new foam for the rider seat and just the cover for the rear (so it's consistent). Only a couple hundred miles on it so far but much improved, we'll work the $250 investment.

BTW there is someone selling a Laam seat on eBay right now for an inflated price. Check the pricing on a newly made just-for-you seat before purchase.

rider33,
How is the Seat Concepts seat now that you have a little time on it? You noted it having much better foam, does it break in?

I've run Seat Concepts seats on my dirt bikes, using the wider "comfort" seat version with great results. I've ridden my S10 for up to 13 hours a day with the stock seat and bicycle gel shorts without too much problem. I might consider the Seat Concepts if it's an improvement over stock. Usually my SC seats were great day-1, and the foam would break in a little bit after the fifth ride or so. Wondering how it's worked out so far on your Tenere', thanks in advance for your update.
