Reflective tape?

I had some black reflective tape (3M) on my FJR and it shined bright red when illuminated.

Did a search here and didn't find anyone that used reflective tape on, say, the rear or sides of the panniers...... which is where I thought it might work out....

Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Kevin

I'd do it. I thought about doing it like you, match it as well as possible to the surface to be bonded with.

Personally, I'd keep it strategic and somewhat minimal as to not be a moving road sign, but enough that I have the tape stand out from odd angles of light. Some like plenty of it, I like it minimal yet effective.

The Dakar characters are black during the day. You can't see them on the black panniers. But hit em with light, (flash from cell phone camera) and they are bright white.

That tape is an amazing product.

There appears to be quite a variety.

Have had good experience with much of the 3M stuff - but now it looks like there's even an "engineer grade" and a "marine grade" ???

Too many choices.

Also - I see a lot of white reflective tape on the rear. That certainly would be a good idea for helmets and jackets and such, but wouldn't ya want red reflective tape for the rear of the bike?

Any colour you like (white seems brighter with less light) as long as it will get the cager's attention off the phone/radio/cheeseburger and slow down!

Is your bike blue, and if so, are you the rider I see by a F.B.O. on the west ramp at Hobby ??? ( No Im not a stalker) I'm also at Hobby. . .

I've got a 2x3 foot sheet of black & white 3M reflective, plus 2 "Yamaha" logos in white on order. I plan to strategically decorate my bike so that it does light up like a billboard from all angles at night, yet still looks good during the day. The Skull & Crossbones on my helmet are actually black, but reflect white.

Pics of the 3M stickers that I've previously added:

I LOVE this stuff!

Yep, you got me pegged. :)

I sit right above where I park. In the big glass window. Been sittin there 12 years. The CEO hates that I ride. Thinks it's too dangerous. He flies upside down in a Czechoslovakian L39 and he thinks what I do is dangerous?

So you ride an S10? I haven't seen it.

I have quite a few hours of upside-down/ backwards time in everything from a Stearman to an F-16D. What does your CEO do that he gets to play with a Delfin

Being able to comment from both perspectives, I would have to agree with the boss that motorcycles are exponentially more dangerous. I've had 10+ near-death experiences on the bike, not a one in the air.

The difference is that anyone with a weak pulse can get a driver's license, and they are ALL out to get you, whereas 95% of the stupid pilots out there quickly graduate to "smoking-crater" status and are really only a danger to themselves.

I use it on the back of my panniers. I don't use the red, because I want a contrasting color when compared to all the other tail lights. I think when you catch a glimpse of the reflection it may look more like a reverse light and apt to get the drivers attention.

Lots of good stuff. I have used the 3M product in the past on the FJR, but also more commonly found stuff from auto parts stores/truck stops that is designed for semi trailers. The red-white-red stuff glows tremendously well and works well when dirty too. I have some of the white at the corners of my panniers and the yellow-black across the panniers & fuel cell too. The ADV triangle stickers are extremely bright reflective as well, and I have one of those on the side and other similar on the sides of the panniers.

He owns a few FBOs. Has about 13,000 hours. (Or something like that. I'm not an airplane guy. Those could be John Deere tractors parked on the ramp and my job wouldn't really change. But everyone else's would. :) )

He had the L39 for a couple of years. Don't know where it is now. Owns a charter company too. Flies all kinds of stuff. He's crazy.

Yea John D, come by anytime. On Fridays, starting at noon, we cook hamburgers-hot dogs for employees, customers, pilots, and anyone that comes by. Usually have a bunch of airport authority folks come by and grab a plate.

Hijack end.

Experimenting myself with making the Tenere show up in the dark. About done with the hind end. Lots of glare and feed back from a simple phone camera flash. Porch light was not on! Key was off. It was pretty dark until the flash went off.

I have the blue reflective wheel stripes. They show up blue but are very noticible from the side of course. ::001::
