Recommended Yamaha service center

Hello all. I have a 2013 S10 with 58,000 miles that I’ve been experiencing some issues with. Mostly a pronounced off idle stumble and general lackluster performance.

I’ve done the usual things...spark plugs, air filter, several tanks of sea foam, sync’d the throttle bodies, gave a good eyeball on the wiring harness connections, and replaced the manifold pressure sensor. Doesn’t seem to matter whether fuel tank full/near empty or which mode I’m running in.

Regardless, I’ve also been reading that my year is potentially eligible for a recall on wiring issues and wanted to take it somewhere reputable for that work and where they have a good grasp on the Super Tenere in general to help me find the fix for my ailing gal.

I’m located in northwest Connecticut but have no problem traveling for good service. I appreciate it folks.

Can't help with a good service center. When you sync'd the throttle bodies, did you just balance them? Or did you back out the paint marked screw 3/4 turn from full in, then balance the other side to it?

For reasons never fully understood, (EPA?), virtually all the US bikes have the painted reference screw either all the way in, or only out a bit. Mine was out less than 1/4 turn on my '15. More air at idle usually helps with the off idle stumble. The rest of the world's Super Tens have the reference screw 3/4 turn out.

I did the 3/4 turn out on the right and then sync the left to it. No improvement. They were closed off before I started but very close in sync. They are prolly just as closely sync’d now as they were when I started but set out at the 3/4.

I also messed a bit with the CO settings but have returned them back to 0.

I agree, throttle body air screw check or adjustment. What did the plugs look like ? Did you have any rust on any of the coils ? I had a customer with similar symptoms and he had dead coil.

Plugs were well beyond the limit on the large side. But the color was good. No rust on the coils. The air filter was pretty clogged when I changed it, which was at the same time as the plugs.

Riding into work tonight was as bad as it has been. Nearly constant misfire below 2k RPM and poor idle. Riding at a constant 3k RPM it seems smooth although not as “powerful” or ready to accelerate as it seems it used to be if that makes any sense.

That does sound like a coil or plug wire issue. I've seen plug wires shorting to ground that resulted in similar effects, but on the Super Ten, I'd suspect the coil first due to the relatively short plug wires.

Thanks for the insight gents. I’ll troubleshoot in that direction when I can get the time to pull it apart.

Is your bike eligible / have you had the engine wiring recall done? Some of the symptoms you describe are consistent with the symptoms the recall corrects.

I’m not sure if it’s eligible or not. I’ve read it covers 2012-2013 but not sure if it’s VIN specific. Mine is a 2013 and I’ll need to call Yamaha to find out for certain if it is indeed included in the recall.

I initially came across the recall during an internet search for my off idle stumble issue and thot it sorta sounded like what I was experiencing to some degree or at least potentially similar. That’s what made me begin thinking in the “taking it to a Yamaha service center” direction initially. Normally I’m a DIY kinda guy.

Thanks for the links. They seem very similar to what I’m experiencing and will definitely give that procedure a shot while I’m in checking my coils resistance.

Cleaning the TPS and accelerator sensor with electron cleaner is ok to do right? I figured a good spray down on those sensor areas with some cleaner along with some light lube on the linkage shown can’t hurt.

Again, I certainly appreciate these great tips guys!

Go to YamahaMotorsports to check for recalls. Towards the bottom there is a link for Product Recalls, enter your VIN and see if your bike has any that are outstanding.

Good luck!

Does your bike run fine when cold then get worse as it warms up? If so, measure the resistance in each coil stick. Primary and secondary.

I would say it runs better when I first start it from cold. Definitely runs much worse once it’s been run for 10 minutes or so.

Do you think I’ll need to check the resistance after getting it good and warmed up or will it show bad resistance cold?

Pulled the coils out today. Each one ohms out at 1.3 primary and 9.09k secondary. I need to pull out my service manual to double check the values but offhand the values sound good.

Was thinking of tossing them in the oven and bringing them up to temp and rechecking the values just to see if any go out of spec once warm. You think that’s worth doing?

Haven’t pulled the lil cover off the TPS yet as I need to get some security bits that’ll fit but I will be doing that before I put it all back together.
