What symptoms is it having?
My pump took a ____ and I just rerouted the hoses. No ABS anymore. But very good brakes.

Thanks Eemsreno,
I actually read your thread after I posted my question. My bikes rear brakes just basically hit the floor. If I pump them a few times or I grab the front brakes, I get pressure back. I don't think it is 100% back, but probably 75%. I am going to put it on the lift tomorrow and try bleeding them and snoop around a bit.

I went to a friends house for dinner and thought a lot about your solution. I have been riding motors for almost 40 years and I really have only used my ABS once but it was a corner on Sonora pass and I probably wouldn't be here right now typing if I didn't have the ABS on the bike. Even though I work on computers for a living, the though of disabling the ABS, saving $1500 and having one less electronic gadget to worry about makes me tingle.

Did you purchase that bolt to connect the brake lines together at Yamaha or are they available at a regular auto parts store?

Thanks again. I appreciate the help.
Jamie

I know what you mean about the danger of no ABS.
My wife was on back just the other day when a Owl flew up right in front of us, I had seen him sitting on the road so I slowed way down but when he took off he went straight in front of us. I braked hard and it slid the rear tire out some and scared my wife some. That would have never happened with ABS. I will tell you that if you bypass the pump the rear brake is almost to powerful. A lot stronger than before. The front is about the same as before because I never shortened any hose to it.

I just used the bolt from an old bike junked out. They are used on lots of bikes.

Good luck.

HA! I have an owl that lives between me and the little town just north of me. Every once in a while he dive bombs me in the evenings. They scare the hell out of you, don't they? Thanks for the heads up and posting this. I am going to bypass it and start a complaint with safercar.gov. These ABS systems should't be failing at 30K

Thanks a lot.

Sounds to me like you have a problem with the rear brake, but I don't see this symptom as pointing to a problem with the ABS part of the braking system.

Hey Mark,

I hope that is the case, but if you look up around on this thread or do a search on the site for "ABS", the ABS pump seems to be a failure point on this bike and the symptom is loss of rear brakes. I haven't done a visual or diagnosis yet, but I replaced the pads less than 5,000 miles ago. I am going to try bleeding the rears, but people that have had ABS pump failures say you can bleed them and after a short amount of time, you have no rear brakes again.
It seems when the ABS pump fails, it introduces air into the rear circuit.

Here is another thread about it.

And here is another with a suggestion on how to bypass the pump if you don't want to spend $1500 and you are willing to live without ABS.

Wasn't up to speed on previous experiences; good info. Hope it I'm right and it isn't serious, but it sounds like you may be right and it is the ABS.

Mark,

If I came across as a bit of a douche, I am sorry. I re-read my reply this morning and I see where it could be taken that way. I have been on Yamaha's of one form or another for 38 years. I am kind of hot under the collar on this.

I meant no disrespect toward you. I lurk on this site all the time but don't post much here because I find searching satisfies most of my needs. I found quite a few threads on this ABS issue so now that I look, the regurgitation of them I did looks snarky.

Sorry about that.

No apologies necessary. I didn't take it as snarky. Hope you get it fixed.
