Hi,

Has anyone done this? I have the packing material and drilled out the rivets on the end can but cant shift the outlet on the end can. Dont want to damage it by my usual brute force!

Hi,

YES, Ive performed this task MANY times. Once the rivets are drilled out double check that each of the rivets are pushed 'into the can' and not just the heads drilled off.... Once this is done you can take a hammer or similar object and slide it down the side of the can and tap the end cap off. If you have a nice looking can (carbon, TI, Etc.) tape up the side of the can so you don't scratch it. You will see the cap work itself off, some of them might be stuck.

From personal experience and from doing this job in the past, if you have a carbon body, I SUGGEST adding something like JB-Weld (high temp) to the end cap before you rivet it back together. The carbon cans tent to not like to be rebuilt and re-riveted. The use of something like JB-Weld (high temp) will help the rivets stay in place for the next 50K miles. Ask me how I know? LOL

EDIT: You will probably want to add small washers to the inside before you rivet it back together. The carbon can and sometimes metal cans dont like the rivet being pulled back through. It pulls the holes larger and then the rivets wont last long. By adding a washer you add a lot of internal "pinching" strength to hold this together........... Keep in mind that you cant get your fingers in there to add the washers while re installing everything. You will need to check / double check all fittings and holes for a one time install. (needs to go smooth). I believe that after I check everything I probably super glued the small washers to the inside of the can and made sure that everything will line up. Once you start with the rivets and epoxy high temp 'glue', you dont want to start taking everything back apart again. I personally would do the washers on all cans for a re build but ESPECIALLY the carbon cans. If you dont, it wont last and the carbon will fracture and the can will come apart. This happened to me in the past.

I tend to not remove the most rearward cap, but typically I remove where the tube enters the can. Taking all this apart and then putting it back together tends to 'wear' on some of these parts and in my case looks like hell. So I keep this (bad looking) hidden down under the cover. If anyone does this with the actual cap it can look bad.... Also, its been awhile and I was just thinking. Almost always the internal tube is welded to the front tube of the can and I slide the body off. I wrap this tube tight and then slide the can back around the new packing. If you take just the end cap off the internal is still in the can and its much harder to "wrap" the internal tube tight with packing.......... I think you 'need' to remove the most forward end cap and not the most rearward end cap to do this job........
