Don't pass up known gas for unknown gas. ;)

That's really good advice, especially up in this neck of the woods. R

Thanks guys. While tempting to test the laws of LD riding, I know speed is not my only friend on these trips. I have a throttle lock and will employ it to regulate my speed.

Regarding fuel stops, I created a spreadsheet last night using S&T that pinpoints gas stations in 180 - 200 mile increments. I alloted 15 minutes for each fuel stop, which should be adequate to excessive (depending on my bladder/bowels). :-\ Moving an average speed of ~69 mph, S&T says I should complete the ride with 2 hours to spare, traveling a total of 1,531 miles. When I did my SaddleSoar 1000, my average speed was 72 mph.

I plan to take a nap this afternoon and take off around 5PM. I want to tackle the overnight section while I'm fresh. I have alerted lots of friends and family to call me to make sure I'm still vertical. I can talk hands-free on the bike through the J&M CB and Zumo bluetooth. I have plenty of audiobooks on the iPod to keep the brain active, so am looking forward to getting rolling. Thanks for all the good thoughts and encouragement. If you think of it, send a prayer my way.

Thanks OX-34. I completed a Saddle Soar 1000 last summer in rougly 18 hours on a bike with only ~115 mile range. While I am not taking this ride lightly, that experience showed me that 1,500 miles is possible if I manage my time well. I can't wait to get started. ::001::
I did a SS1600km on my Honda SH300i scooter last year - it took 12 fuel stops!

Sleep well and have a great ride ::008::

A BBG is well within the realm of possibility with the S10 using the stock tank. Until I got distracted by my proximity to Deal's Gap a couple weeks ago, I was on track to finish a BBG in 21.5 hours. Thanks to the Cherohala and the Gap, I ended up doing an SS1k and BB 1500 instead. Paperwork is going in this week.

Its done! I completed the BB Gold in 22 hours, 45 minutes. Total distance travelled: 1,567 miles. Average speed: 68.9 mph. ::013::

The ride was uneventful, other than narrowly missing a skunk at 2AM. Thanks to Jaxon and the Baja lights, I saw this black blob far enough in front of me to swerve around it. At first I thought it was a tire tread thrown by a big rig until I got right up on it. Holy crap!!! Thats a skunk!!! ??? That would have ruined the rest of the trip.

The attached pic is from the start. I only wish my bike were that clean now. The folks along the route should send me a thank you note. They will enjoy a bug free summer because they're all splattered on my bike. :D

Congrats! Now do the paperwork and send it in. ::008::

So, when are you planning a Border To Border Gold or Coast To Coast To Coast? ;)

On our ride up from Panama, to both US coasts & back last year, we averaged 44 mpg on all the various types of fuel available, were two-up & fully loaded. After wearing out a Transalp before the S10, my driving model has not changed. We find that doubling the motor size and increasing our load capacity, (and bragging rights) we're right where we want to be. We've never gone without the side bags, tank bag, 1 gal extra fuel, rain gear, tire repair kit & pump. Here in the Tropics, it's a long push to find help. I have never been out of "T", but we're never last either, ya know?

I still ride nearly every day, but 'till we get the "butter rims & loose spokes" issue back on track, I wont take her on the open road.

We've discovered a increase in mileage since our return, (no more two-up or heavy load) but I think it could be due to the fuel formula used in Panama.

Cheers, Motopan

We have the space in Australia, but not the fuel station availability. Too far for a stock Super Tenere through the night in much of Australia.

A national speed limit of 110km/h with a required overall average for the BBG being 105km/h makes things very tight.

My two BBGs had about 20km total divided road - the remaining 2480km just on dual carriage way :(

The paperwork is sitting in the mailbox. That was the first thing I did yesterday morning. With this ride, I'm done with IBA sanctioned rides for quite some time. I ride to Alaska in July, so that oughts scratch my itch for the foreseeable future. Really, the Alaska trip is the reason I did the BB Gold. I wanted to spend some quality time on the bike to make sure it is dialed in. The bike performed flawlessly. I am still have issues with the Russell Day Long saddle, but will send it back to them for tweaking this week.

That's tough - it takes a lot more focus to do a BBG on dual carriageway. You definitely earned both!!!

I'll be fitting an aux tank to the FJR in the next few weeks and having a crack at a third BBG 2500 on it.....

That's amazing. You came in with plenty of time left. Congratulations! How many gallons of gas did you consume? What windscreen is that?

Thanks. I have yet to total up the gallons on the gas receipts to check my overall mpg. I will get that posted up.

As goofy as it sounds, I have no idea what flavor windscreen I have. I bought the bike used and it was already installed. I love it - I get wind in the top vents of my helmet but not a lot of buffetting. I will take a closer look to see if I can find a name etched in it.
