I will attempt a Bun Burner Gold over Memorial weekend and needed to discover the range of this machine. So yesterday morning topped off the tank, strapped the spare gas cans on the back of my panniers and took off. As a bonus, it was sunny in the upper 70's. ::008:: Great morning for a ride!

I ended up getting 233 miles on that tankful. My speed varied, but pretty much stayed between 75 - 80 on the speedo (70 - 75 on the Zumo). Thats only a bit over 38 miles per gallon - less than expected. :-[

Side note - I got +/- another 50 miles after the "E" started flashing on the fuel gauge.

Under normal weather conditions I have found keeping the RPMs less than 4,000 will increase the MPG a lot.

Head and side wind drops the MPG a bunch.

Remove the panniers and see if your mileage improves. On my former 800GS, I lost about 30 miles range per tank with the panniers mounted due to increased wind drag.

On the way home to Indiana from New Orleans I did a 738 mile superslab day. I could get over 240 per tank. Had Pelican cases and a Wolfman dry bag on the back. Total trip average from my GPS was 47 MPG. On the slab I was running 5 over the limit and that would be about 75 MPG.
Hope this helps

Thanks all for the feedback. Keeping under 4K on the RPM sounds like good advice. Also will look at removing the panniers for this trip. Don't like leaving home without tools/supplies/fuses/etc, so will look at putting a bag on the rear rack. Would allow me to leave the panniers at home.

Have done 4 600 mile days in last 3 weeks. MPG ranged from 30.2 on one day to 39.8 on last. Same speeds and roads. Variable being winds. This is at 80-85 on GPS.

On my trip last week crusing backroads on touring mode at around 50 mph I got 240 miles before reserve started flashing. Another 30 miles to gas
and it took about 5.3 gallons . Normal riding I usually go about 225 before hitting reserve . Bike is totally stock .

Rode 385 miles today over 9,6xx, 8,6xx, 8,6xx, 7,7xx ft el Sierra passes. Weather was great with surprisingly little wind. Had the OEM side cases mounted. First tank 142 miles at 44 mpg. second tank 159 miles at 47 mpg. Haven't filled up the last tank. Some of the open road was more than 4,000 rpms.

BunBurner Gold pace is pretty relentless............................

With Pelican cases and a jerry can on the back seat my BBG results:
1561miles , 42.27 gallons = 36.9 mpg
2512km, 159.77litres = 15.7 km/L or 6.36 L/100km

With almost 20000km/12000miles on my Tenere I have managed 251miles/405km from a tank a couple of times - close to, but not out of gas.......

My math shows 233 miles and 5.7 gallons to be almost 41 mpg. 5.7-5.8 seems to be the most you can use out of the tank, not the six as advertised, and prolly the number you used. I drop into the mid to upper 30's at those speeds. But, like yesterday, kept it under 60 and I got 49.
Bottom line; you know when you'll have to start walkin' now.

Thanks Don. I was indeed using the stated tank capacity of 6.0 gallons. I much prefer having the mpg start with a "4".

Since will have gas cans strapped to the panniers, hopefully I won't be walking at all. But those are only a last resort.

Just completed a 500 mile round trip on the S10 and one tank full got me 202 miles for ~19litres and the 2nd tank full got me 212 for ~21litres. Measurements used are approx due to difficulty in getting a consistent full fill with the stock filler pipe (i was trying to brim as much as possible but also in a rush so didnt want to spend all day clicking a fuel pump trigger) . Bike was in full panniers/topbox trim and in S mode . Progress was a mix of brisk and tedious but I usually tried to follow the traffic pace on UK M'ways. Definitely noted consumption going south over 4k revs and the dynamic fuel consumption display did show 22MPG (UK gallon) on certain WOT over takes, though hovered between 43MPG and +48MPG subject to revs . Towards the end of the last tank I dropped back to 3~3.5k revs to stretch to it to nearer home before having to refill, which got the dynamic reading to ~53MPG. .

NOTE all Gallons in this post are UK Spec and about 4.54litres.

Just got back from a 1,350 round trip. Easy 225 without hitting the flashing "E". Typically added 4.5 gallons. However I topped it past the filler tube and I think it would have made 275 but the gas stops were too far apart to try it. Conditions were interstate, back roads and gravel roads. Did not exceed 4K RPM for the most part.

Going down the Baja peninsula Mexico Rt 1, there is a stretch of 200 miles that is sometimes without gas. I strapped on a 1 gallon gas can just in case (a former Honda oil jug), but I never even hit reserve -- big panniers notwithstanding. It seemed possible to get close to 300 miles. Mileage drops off rapidly around 65-70MPH. Our group kept the speed at around 60MPH the whole way; in those situations, just slow down and take in the scenery. ;D

I can get a theoretical 500Km until dry at 100Km/H (60-65Mph). Done it a few times slabbing it back at legal speed on our radar infested highways. So, agree, if you have to stretch it, it can be done pretty well.

Just going back to Merchant's original post, he's talking about an IBA BunBurner Gold..........

1500miles in 24 hours people ???

He's not bimbling around backroads at 50, he's not riding on gravel, and he sure isn't getting it down below 60 to help with the mileage ::001::

He has to average a minimum of 62.5 mph ::26:: for the whole 24 hours. Thats riding, filling up 6 to 8 times at under 5 minutes each including paying for the fuel, logging his miles and gallons, eating, drinking, taking a leak, napping if need be.

All power to you Merchant - have a great ride mate ::008::

Thanks OX-34. I completed a Saddle Soar 1000 last summer in rougly 18 hours on a bike with only ~115 mile range. While I am not taking this ride lightly, that experience showed me that 1,500 miles is possible if I manage my time well. I can't wait to get started. ::001::

Hope it goes/went well. ::008::

The BBG is all about managing your stopped time, not about going fast. It's far easier to avoid stopped time than to make up time once moving again.

Our MPG varies widely, in part due to the air flow around the bike and lack of a more aerodynamic fairing, but largely due to the parallel twin motor, imho.

I've gotten 240 miles with 5.9 gal at 75 mph actual. But as mentioned, atspeeds over 60 the mpg starts going down and over 70, really starts to drop off.

Don't pass up known gas for unknown gas. ;)
