I like to ride with a radar detector on or in all my vehicles. Looking at the Tenere for locations to mount the detector and looking at what materials I had laying around the shop I decided on the cross bar on the windshield brackets .

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but do you find the detectors really work? i bought an expensive Escort unit (i forget the model) but it is always going off for no reason, I can get it to learn these false alerts, but there are so many false alerts that when a real alert occurs i ignore it assuming its another false alert. I have driven through multiple lazer speed traps and the detector has never once given an alert and stated LAZER (as it's supposed to). For me it has been the biggest waste of $400 I have ever had. Just wondering if I am alone or doing something wrong?

I use the Escort 9500IX, it has more than paid for itself. In my area, all X band and most K are false alerts. ALL KA are to be taken seriously. When you get a laser alert, they already have you. However, one day I was on a freeway, pulled out to pass some traffic when my LASER alert went off. I decided it wasn't the best time to make that pass.

Gary I have been using detectors( mostly Valentine 1 ) for a long time and they have saved me numerous times over the cost of the detectors .

I have an Escort and it has paid for itself many times. I rotate it between whatever car/motorcycle I'm driving. In any metropolitan area you're going to pick up a lot of junk. You should be able to change the sensitivity settings. On the open road I've picked up radar as far as two miles before I got to it. BUT, if the cop is setting beside the road and flips the radar on right when you get to him you may be in trouble. I've read that slamming on the brakes as soon as it goes off can help because the radar uses several hits to make sure of the speed and if the speed is changing, it doesn't get a good reading. Like I said, I just read that on the net and it may not be so at all. The only thing the lazer detector does is tell you that you just got hit with lazer and you will be receiving your performance award very shortly.

Around here in the DC metro-Maryland area it is almost all laser. They pull the trigger and you can stick a fork in it cuz you're cooked.

I just let somebody go faster than me now & then.

Thanks guys, I have a 9500i detector, I just turned of the X band detection and will see if that helps. I speed all the time, but in 30 years and more than a million miles I have never had an accident, so I don’t consider myself a dangerous driver, but I am quick. I usually get 1 ticket a year which is why I bought the detector. I have got 2 tickets since buying it 2 years ago due to all the false alerts and my ignoring the detector!! Hopefully this change will help reduce the false alerts and make the detector usable. I always try to make sure someone is going quicker than me, but at least once a year I get caught!! If this helps I will look at moving the detector between my car and bikes, for the moment it just stays in my car..

Regards Gary

I have to back up escort users in the house. The advice I can offer anyone considering a radar detector is simple. Pay attention to your device. It has a language of its own. As you use it the type of alert, the level of intensity, the increase or decrease of intensity all communicate something. As all above this comment have said, my $500 gps detector has more than paid for itself in saved insurance premium increases let alone the actual fine from the ticket.

The only speeding ticket I’ve gotten in the 13 years I’ve used escort detectors was the day I left it in the glove box.

a person could just slow down and enjoy the ride..... as far as laser goes it will ( escort radar detector) pick up the scattered laser light ( say when the cop aims it at another car close by ) and give a warning at times .... nothing is perfect . even the cops are guessing on who was actually speeding at times when using radar . when it does detect laser I love how it screams LASER! with a blast of sound.

The scatter idea would be good if they kept shooting cars continuously, but they don't do that here. They just wait for one to be slightly faster than the crowd, pull the trigger, release if they are letting him go by, and wait for the next one.

You are probably going to want some Superbraces for your accessory bar. http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=22728.0
Unless you have really nice roads, your detector/gps will bounce around quite a bit.

got to love cops..... there a lot like doctors , never wrong even if the patient dies..... your not wrong that instant on feature will get a user (detector) a ticket... when you have used one awhile you learn not to lead the pack... as for myself owning and using a radar detector is not about speeding , I try to obey the limits . its a reminder (as one can drift over the limit ) to be aware of what one is doing.... and who might be ahead of you.... and cops do err.
