Threads around here wander off topic? LOL

Nice job on the build.

LOL, don't sweat it, Iddave. I've posted lots of DIY projects on line, and on some of them, the bulk of the replies were either how much time I wasted making it, or just went off on a tangent that reminded me of the "whisper" game you played as a kid. Some of them landed with no response at all. Take heart in knowing that someone out there was googling "homemade radar detector shelf" and saw your post, and said "now that's exactly what I was looking for!", and they're in their garage right now cutting a pattern on that old piece of ammo can they had laying around. If you google something like "homemade pannier quick release", you'll see hits on projects I've posted both here and on Stromtroopers; I think it's cool that someone out there saw the posts and thought either, "hey, that's what I was looking for", or else it gave them a springboard for a new idea.

I think it's a great project; it fills a need, and it can be made by someone with a limited amount of tools and materials. You could use it for other things, like a garage door opener or even a power outlet, so it can fill other roles. I made a similar accessory shelf, only mine attaches to the unused bolt holes in the windshield bracket.

As CW and RCinNC have mentioned, no-one will knock you for ingenuity, may even get praise, but the mere fact that this is an adventure forum, it will undoubtedly be full of anecdotes.... roll with it.

I used a Tech Mount. Mounts through and existing hole on the top of the left side panel, and shoots through the windshield. I'm using a Cobra DSP 9200 BT detector (Cobra was bought out by Escort, this is their first DSP detector). It shoots bluetooth through my iPhone to my Sena. I see the alerts through the phone display, and also hear it play through my helmet speakers. It lowers the music so you can hear it. Have been using this over a year, and it works surprisingly well and has saved me many a stop. Cobra has discontinued this detector, not because it's not a great detector, but because they wanted to maintain a large distinction between Escort and Cobra. I picked up 2 of them for about $120/ea new. They are awesome detectors for the money.

Nice job on the detector mounts !

Because of all the false alarms and making them illegal in some areas I gave up on detectors 30+ years ago, been very lucky since only one ticket in the last 30 years. I have friends with very expensive detectors and just let them be the bait.

I'd probably have 2 tickets a week without a detector. These bikes only know two speeds - off and on . . .
I have learned to follow traffic. Somebody passes me let them get 100 yards/meters ahead and follow them. Have watched my rabbits get several tickets.

so after you build and install your custom home made radar detector mount , you have to mount your radar detector , then you need to use it..... big bob has a valid strategy , it is one I use if I am going to speed . I'm pretty happy being some where near the speed limit mostly.

Same here. Strategy is that if you are not near anyone else, they can't hit you. I find a hole and stay in it. When it closes up, I look for another one and move to it.

Regarding speeding tickets, I live on a road that has a 15 mph speed limit, and we have our own Barney Fife that shoots radar on it several times every day. Anyone successful maintaining 15mph for a mile + on their ST?

I like to ride with a radar detector on or in all my vehicles. Looking at the Tenere for locations to mount the detector and looking at what materials I had laying around the shop I decided on the cross bar on the windshield brackets .
Hi Dave, that's a nice simple design. Sorry all the miscreants here are crapping on your thread and using it as their own personal radar detector soapbox.

One of my winter projects is to come up with a way to mount my V1 in the space between the accessory bar and the top of the instrument cluster.

Here's one way: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?action=media;sa=album;in=96

It's a shelf that sits over the instrument pod. I made it from a couple of pieces of 18 GA sheet steel cut from an old ammo can. It bolts to the two unused holes in the windshield mount. I use it for a couple USB outlets, but a radar detector would sit on it just fine.

I hope you post your results I would be interested in seeing the outcome .

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but do you find the detectors really work? i bought an expensive Escort unit (i forget the model) but it is always going off for no reason, I can get it to learn these false alerts, but there are so many false alerts that when a real alert occurs i ignore it assuming its another false alert. I have driven through multiple lazer speed traps and the detector has never once given an alert and stated LAZER (as it's supposed to). For me it has been the biggest waste of $400 I have ever had. Just wondering if I am alone or doing something wrong?

Using a radar detector effectively is a learned skill, and it isn't all that easy. Because radar frequencies are used for other things besides police radar, using a detector to good effect is a nuanced activity that takes time and experience to master. I realize that this sounds ridiculous but it's true. A detector is just one tool in your arsenal, which includes understanding how radar range is effected by terrain, how to leverage other traffic to your advantage, constant vigilance/situational awareness, local tendencies of enforcement, etc.

My freeway-nominal speed in car or on bike is about 82, and I've had one ticket in maybe 15 years. Actually 2, but one was directly because my detector was turned off. The other was because I didn't slow down to account for conditions (3am, no other traffic for me to use as a screen/detect when they got radar'd). I would say that I slow and thereby avoid speed traps / radar cops maybe once every 15 days on average. I live in the South; when I was a Northerner that number was more like once every other day.

Regarding laser, virtually 100% of hte time, if the laser isn't actually targeting your vehicle in real time, you aren't getting an alert. And, if it is targeting you, it's too late. The only effective anti-laser strategy is to install quality shifters.

lddave (aka son #2),

Nice looking shelf that you've constructed - so nice that I'd like for you to make me one. Make one modification - round off the corners so when I nod off (being an old geezer) that I don't poke out my eye on that sharp corner. ;)
