Hey! In the German Tenere forum there is a huge discussion about power issues with the XT1200Z. Officially it's got 110 horsepower. Now there are two points:

1) In the lower gears the power is electronically limited: 1st - 78 hp, 2nd - 90 hp, 3rd - 98 hp. That's what, according to some magazines, makes the XT1200Z significantly slower than the BMW R1200GS, especially in the mountains. Have you read or heard anything about this limitation in non-EU bikes?

2) In a comparison test Germany's biggest motorbike magazine MOTORRAD (which is suspected to be extremely pro-BMW by many non-BMW-riders...) measured the BMW with 111 hp and the XT1200Z with 101 hp. What do independent tests in your countries say?

I really don't care about this, because I've ridden along with a BMW for 5000 miles and know that the bikes are just equally powerful. But this image of being lamer than the mighty Beemer is what turns the XT1200Z into a slow seller here.

It sucks and it reminds me of the same old covered up bias that the cruiser market went through.

In countries where adventure Tourers are used properly in places such like Australia, South America, South Africa they have been reviewed quite positively, because they test them on all kinds of stuff.

The YAMAHA was made to all kinds of shit roads and that was how they made it. It is not biased for the street. It was not designed to be a penis extender, it was designed to do a job safely, RELIABLY and comfortably.

The funny thing is the Owners tend to rate them highly, while the European mags don't. Wonder why?

And frankly the BMW makes 40 HP less than the Multi, has less sophisticated suspension, weighs more etc etc so why don't they just all go out and buy them if that's all they want. It seems to be technically better all round to me, if that is what you are looking for.

See what they say to that, then use all those excuses against the BMW. Should be fun to watch. :D

Cheers

I doubt that most riders even use the 110hp available. I like to think of it as "power on tap". When I need it, I know it's there. I don't think I'll be racing against a GS, preferably I'll be riding with them. 8)

I do most of my riding one up, but this past weekend I went out with swmbo for a 200 miler around the yorkshire dales.
As I was on the home leg it occurred to me that I hadn't noticed any difference to the power when I was two up compared to solo riding.

That, to me, says all there needs to be said about available and required power.

It's about TORQUE and where it comes in.

Maybe someone can check me on this, but my understanding is the BMW R1200GS produces 68 ft/lb(93 Nm) of torque @ 6500 RPM, The Ducati Multistrada 1200 produces 78.6 ft/lb(106.5 Nm) @ 7500RPM (not sure WHY I felt compelled to include this bike, but I did), and the XT1200Z Super Tenere produces 84 ft/lb(114.1 Nm) of torque @ 6000 RPM. That equates to approximately 6.7 to 20% more actual power/working force at a lower engine speed.

'Nuff said.

That's why it's better two up...considerably better.

BMW R1200GS Max. torque 88 ft-lb (120 Nm) at 6,000 rpm

Ducati MS 118.65 Nm (12.1 kgf-m or 87.5 ft.lbs) @ 7500 RPM

That's cool!! Glad I have lost 40 pounds since last riding season!!!! Of course I was on the FJR last season, so not sure if I have a better ratio or now..................... It is more porky, but more power.
