Hey guys, just joined and just picked up my 2014 S10 this week. I just got back from a ride trying to break everything in per the manual and decided to check the oil. Below is what I see in the sight window right after riding and then 20 minutes later in the second photo. The bike is on its center stand in my almost level garage. Did the dealer overfill? I am still new to the dry sump deal.

Thanks!

New here , too. From my understanding, after a few minutes you should be able to check it.
I just changed and checked mine by the book and the oil was dead center.

It looks a little over filled. Now put it on the side stand, and then, one by one, put paint sticks or some other type of shim under the side stand and see how close you get to vertical to get the window filled with oil. If you are very close to straight up and down, I would not worry about it, but if it fills just as you are trying to straighten it up, I would drain some out. There are two drain plugs and if you drain from the forward one, not too much oil will come out. Restart the bike and run it for a few minutes, then top off to the upper line on the window, if too much drained out.

Mine looked the same on delivery and after the 600 mile service. If I allow the bike to tip just slightly to the left, the top of the oil level appears. On the side stand, no oil is visible. given the low location of the oil filler opening, it would be pretty hard to over-fill it by much.

Mental hospitals are full of people who tried to chase oil levels around a sight glass. If you can see the line of oil in the glass, hot or cold, you are good to go.

It's possible you have a major overfill, but unlikely.... it is more/less normal that if you fill with the spec'ed amount it will be at the top of the sight glass which means the level may be just out of sight. I wouldn't worry about it.... a small overfill won't harm a thing.

As Mark said, don't worry too much about it. Ask the dealer if he filled it himself. Mine came straight from Japan to Malta and had oil in it, filled by factory. Try tilting the bike a little to the left and with the help of someone see if the oil level becomes visible in the sight glass. If that is the case, it's not too much overfilled and I wouldn't worry too much. However, if you want to play it safe and avoid oil going into the airbox, remove a little from the foward plug.

They come from the factory filed with oil, but part of the setup person's checklist is to check oil level and adjust if not proper. If that person were not familiar with the S10's dry sump and didn't read the manual about how to check the oil, it could be slightly overfilled.

I'm pretty sure the Original Poster of nearly 2 months ago already has this sorted. ::) No need to be helpful with "me too" posts.

Is there a restriction on too many posts or addressing old posts? If not, why do you keep harassing people about it. Who cares how often people ask about oil or how old a post is that gets addressed? Please stop lecturing us Eric. We used to have a know all lecturer on the site but he left.

Reading comprehension is a skill. I fully agree, who cares how many times someone asks a question? New people always come on board and have questions. Questions, are excellent. Replies to questions that have been answered long ago are not. That's just someone that's simply not paying attention.

Teaching people to pay attention by looking at the dates is a good thing. Teaching people to use the search tools is great too, but not everyone has those skills and sometimes they just want the answer w/o having to look for themselves. I rarely have issue with that, someone can often just help them with the answer, sometimes even me.

None of the new posts in this thread asked a useful question. They were trying to be helpful to the OP, who long ago got all the answers he needed.

Oh, and that guy you may have liked, didn't leave, he just doesn't have the stones to post any more. He PMs people complaining that he was referred to in ways he didn't care for.

Responded to an old post is like just getting the punchline to a joke told a month ago. It's cool that it makes you happy, but sort of odd to everyone else that's moved on.

But hey, that's just my opinion. :D

I was referring to dallara from quite a while ago, not the fella who just left. I just get a little sick of some people thinking they know so much more than others and letting us know that by the way they answer and generally telling us what we are doing wrong on the forum. Being knowledgeable is great, knowing how to pass on that knowledge without appearing to be a smart Alec is another skill altogether.

I got told a few weeks ago via a PM (not you) that I shouldn't have written any words on the picture only post. Really? Was that necessary? How about letting the little stuff go and being a little more collegial and a bit less "I know everything about motorbikes and forum etiquette"?

I just quick dump the whole bottle of Shell T-6 in and ride.
As far as resurrecting old post It is going to get worse as winter comes upon us.
I would be happy for all the folks selling items on the for sale thread to mark the title as SOLD when it gets sold, this way I don't keep looking at the same post over and over again thinking a new item I have been looking for was a new post.
But than again I now am jobless so I shouldn't be looking for anything now but a job!! :D
