Over on ADV rider there was a poster looking for white Pelican like cases. Sombody actually found a link to some and while some commented they would get very dirty I started thinking about white side cases on a white Tenere ;)

has anyone looked in to the possibility of a low mount exhaust to allow mounting the left side saddlebag closer to the bike or also so that the bag could be full size without having the backside cut out ?

I'm not aware of any vendor selling a low exhaust. Below the saddlebag routing would expose more of the exhaust system to ground contact so would definitely push the bike away from the dirt. There may also be issues of how the exhaust is segmented with the cat and mounting problems that would make this problematic, especially for a slip-on solution. It's possible some vendor might tackle this but I wouldn't hold my breath; the Stroms have been around for a long time now and I haven't seen any low-pipe options for them.

To me, the slight reduction in bag capacity and/or making the left bag sit further outboard seem like pretty reasonable tradeoffs for getting the exhaust off the deck. I'd like to see the header pipes re-routed to not go underneath the engine, but I suspect the cat requires the existing solution and it would be a big engineering effort to sell a complete system with different routing.

Low pipe is going to be difficult to do while still retaining credible dirt credentials - don't think there'd be much demand for it.

There was talk from Jesse about offering a left pannier that fitted the bike better and/or increased capacity if you used an aftermarket exhaust. If you're thinking about buying Jesses, and replacing the stock muffler, then I would recommend talking to them before purchasing the current version.

My plans for the Super Tenere are to use it as a Sport Adventure Tourer, I have no intention of doing any serious off-roading with it. Maybe going back to the far north corners of north america, Alaska, New Foundland and Gaspe,
The roads getting to those places can be rough enough for me, especially the construction zones on the way to Alaska.
Back in 2004 I thought my V-strom was the perfect bike for my Alaska trip, I did 11,400 miles in 21 days and all I had to do was change one 1 rear tire, thats all. I think the Tenere would be even better for those trips. I had Givi E-41 bags and Staintune exhaust on the V-Strom but havent decided what I'll use on the Tenere.

Getting a little off discssion. I have heard from Caribou that they intend to do some research and development for their own rack to fi the S10 over the winter. Looking at the Caribou racks currently available for other MC, They look very robust. I look forward to this development, since we in NA most likely wont have need for panniers over the winter.
The question of offset panniers to compensate for the exhaust space is a matter of opinion. For myself two panniers of the same capacity and shape are fine. The extra space between the pannier and the frame opposite the muffler is an opportunity to provide a smaller pannier for extra storage...........tools, first aid kit or spare parts.

I think I've narrowed it down to Pelican side cases, or the Givi trekker side cases. That a big change for me since I've run with a top box for the last 50K miles. But that was on a top heavy Strom and adding a top box was not noticeable. However Yamaha did such a great job of putting the weight down low on the S10 that I'm just struggling with the idea of screwing that up by putting on a top box. I'm thinking I can get away with the Pelican with case liners and it will be just as convenient as a top box. I've always limited my use of side cases to extended travel because I don't care for the extra bulk. It shouldn't be so damn hard to figure this out.

Did you determine if the "set" has two 33L and one 46L OR one 33L and two 46L? When I checked, I was told it was two 33L and one 46L. I had to order separate to get my preference (one 33L and two 46L).

Has anyone seen the Hepco Becker racks installed? I can't tell if they are asymmetrical or symmetrical?

When I was considering them, I asked amotostuff to measure the racks and they said the exhaust side is 15 mm farther out than the non exhaust side. That is only a bit over 1/2 inch, so that seems close to symmetrical, so you would have to run the same size bags on both sides. Somewhere I had the width for the 30 and 40 HB bags and it seems like it was close to 3 inches difference. The HB web site shows 30's on both sides for the XT1200Z. I thought that was strange, as the setup they had on a R1200GS at the Indy show was asymetrical so they had the 40 on one side and 30 on the other.

Hey Fred where did you see the 1200 on the HB website I couldn't even find it listed in the drop down menu of bikes. Could you post a link if there are pics?
Thanks

That does seem to solve another question I had, Fredz...namely the clearance on the left side for the Caribou setup, which uses the Hebco racks and overall symmetry.

If I read your post right, the difference between left and right mountings is maybe a 1/2 inch difference on the left, which kind of makes my decision on the Caribou setup anyway (kind of where I wanted to be)..

Anthony are you going with the 35L cases I forgot to ask you in the PM from before? I think you and I and maybe Dirt Dad are the only ones considering Pelicans with HB racks. Sounds like from Fred our off set concerns might not be that bad.

Yeah, 35l for me...should be more than enough room. When I cmap I also carry a dry bag on top with camping gear...and don't usually carry riders...my wife doesn't much care for riding with me (she doesn't much care for driving with me either).

You're right about only a few of us buying...though some others who may have considered them already jumped on the Micatech discounts...and you're, right; Sounds like offset will not be an issue.

Besides price, it's just so darn hard to walk away from lifetime guarantee.
