One more thing... how wide is too wide? I love the look of the Meatal Mule or Zega Pro panniers in black, but not sure whether to go 31/38 and stay narrow or 38/45 and get fat? My GS Varios had around 30/39 (but with the vario mechanism probably less) and I could live with the smaller capacity but would appreciate the bigger boxes if they were not too unwieldy. I do filter between traffic if there are long hold-ups on the road but not otherwise.

Opinions appreciated. I need to go and buy my S10 in the next few days before she sells elsewhere, but I have to do my nerdy research first.

Regards,

Matt :-\

For me, too wide is any time the cases are wider than the bars by any significant amount. I went 31/38 Zega Pro and could not be happier.

Have you got some photos of your set-up? Maybe better to post them on the photo thread to avoid confusion, but I would like to see what they look like other than in a catalogue.

Thanks for your insight. ::008::

Yup! I'll have them up in a bit. If you go to

you can see some from the install last night. I'm going out right now to get better detailed shots. Stand by!

Narrower is always better for nimbleness; wider is better for capacity. Hard to pick a magic number that is "too wide" as everybody's tradeoffs between the two are different, although the "no wider than the handlebars" guideline is a good one. If I lived somewhere where filtering was allowed, I'd prioritize narrowness.

One reason I chose the OEM bags is I don't think anybody does as good a job tucking them up close to the bike. And they just look better proportioned and more correct for the bike. But their capacity is smaller than almost all the aftermarket stuff. I use this as encouragement not to overpack and overload.

YMMV.

That Zega Pro package looks wonderful. The "soft" lines of the cases work really well with the S10. I am heading to the local dealer tomorrow and suspect I will buy the Black S10 they have in there at the moment. Silver or black Zega Pro? Silvier would be cheaper and be a good contrast, the black would be classy and have a stealthy look...

Hmmmmm. :-\

It's a tough call. I have the ano silver 31/38 Zega Pros on my Raven S10. I went with the silver because I wanted the contents to be slightly cooler, and because black looks great when clean, but tends to look worse than silver when dirty. Here is a shot of the bike dirty.

And clean:

Not much different, even though the dirty pic was right after 300 miles of dirt road and only another 100 or so of pavement to blow things off. They really are covered in dust, but it doesn't look like it. Black cases would look filthy.

I only had one black full face helmet... the first one, cause it looked so cool. NOT. After that brain baking experience, every other helmet I've owned has been silver or white. The inside of the silver panniers will be much cooler than the black, IMHO. Mostly not an issue, but sometimes it is. The anodizing is worth the coin. It's so nice to not have black rub marks on everything. My SO's BMW cases are plain and she's always got black marks on everything, inside or outside from her cases.

I have the silver anodised 31/38 Zega pro package, and while I was initially very philosophically resistant to buying ANYTHING from TT, so far, I'm happy that I did. If more pannier options had been available at the time I needed them, I might have made a different pannier decision, however, I am impressed by the design, fit, solidity, and finish of the stainless steel TT rack. TT was kind enough to throw the locks in as a kicker on my order, which was nice of them. I'm not convinced that the locks are really worth the money if they had to be bought separately.

I had Happy Trail panniers on both my KLR and my 800 GS, and believe that they have some of the best customer service in the industry. From a pure personal aesthetics point of view, the TT offering is easier on my eyes. Being practical, I think that most pannier set ups will be a challenge to repair in a way that keeps the contents dry. It's just a guess on my part, but it seems that the plastic pucks on the TT set up might give way before there is too much damage to the pannier, whereas the metal puck systems might make more of a mess. I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts or experiences with this!

Here's another way I was looking at this non-symmetrical issue.

Standard setup from Wasp's bike photo.

Altered photo below showing identical sized boxes.

Should work the same with Pelican. I believe I'll be satisfied with this setup. Plus I do not intend to have a top box to help point out the difference.

which racks are these? where is the wasp thread?

Length and width of 31 L Zega Pro opening....

Anyone know the opening width and depth of the Zega 31L? I had the dealer order two 31 L's instead of the 31-38 combo and I'm trying to get a sense of opening dimensions. From Firefight911's photos it looks like maybe eight inches? Also just realized the dealer only ordered one set of locks (a pair), but that's only good for one case, as they lock on both sides of the case. Hopefully touratech can send anther pair that are matched to the same key? FYI, they still charge you the same whether you go wit two 31's or the 31-38 combo. Not cheap but they do look the part. ::008::

Touratech Zegas

Ollie - please be sure to post photos of your install.

When I am ready its definitely the Touratech Zegas for me. I pack light and want the bike as narrow as possible. A set of 31L bags is fine for me. Just curious to see how it looks with the 31 / 38.

I have the 31/38 Zega Pros. The Zega bags have a 1/8" lip around the inside of the bag opening. The opening is 7 3/4" x 17 1/8", but inside the bag it is 8" wide. All sizes are 17 1/8", (17 1/4 Inside, below the lip), but it's not uncommon to see 1/16" variation from bag to bag on the opening length. The bags are 12 3/4" deep to the top of the open bag, with an additional 2 5/8" of depth in the lid.

Pics of the 31/38 exist in this thread already. Post 289, 293 (page 20).

@EricV. Thanks, just what I was looking for. Two 31's should work out just fine for my needs.
