Anybody with the OEM panniers that also has tried the inserts. If so my question is do you feel you loose much space inside due to the bag construction-? Does it take away very much packing space using them-?
"Much space" is a bit slippery, but I don't think the penalty is more than 5% or so. They seem custom-made to fit the bags and have expandable panels to suit the load and which side you're using them on (as the two sides vary in dimensions a bit).

To my thinking, the liners are a slam-dunk if you have the Yamaha panniers.

Yes
Might it be possible/practical to relocate the grab handles higher? I suppose that would involve some kind of custom spacers and have to be compatible with your cases.
Possible, but difficult. Anyway they would probably be too high to be comfortable for the passenger. Spacers are the way to go - even if you went out to 38" the Jesses are still narrower than most bags on the market. I'm planning on removing grab rails and tightening things up over Christmas, reckon I can get to 35" or just over.

Thanks MarkJenn
Nice to hear that. I might try one for now. It would be nice to just lift and go. I can't remember but think they were reasonably priced. Where did you buy yours or did you see them someplace perhaps-?

Echo that and add that liners are a "must have" no matter what brand of panniers you use. No way do I want to tote a grungy pannier into either my tent or a motel room at the end of the day.

I don't use the "liners", but instead use different size duffle bags with no cardboard form. These work for the way I pack the cases and will form to whatever area I have available. On long trips I also use a dry roll up duffle bag to carry on top.

I see what you mean after looking at the duffel idea. Great website, I should have figured there would be a duffelbags.com. Thanks Japako.
I bet they hold up just fine for the price like my bike cover I bought for very little money and it is doing fine 15 months later. I'd still like to see the Yamaha insert to see what I am paying for.

I don't have the Yamaha cases, but I do use the liner designed for my Caribou case. Very pleased with it. It allows me to cram as much as possible into the case with no wasted space an ill-fitting bag might require. I know before I leave the house my bag in going to fit in the bike without issue.

I've been using the bags that came with the Mountainsmith Modular hauler set that I bought from Sierra Trading Post as pannier liners. These things are great - multipurpose (handy on 4 wheel road trips, on the boat, and on the bike). They fit nicely in the panniers, and it's hard to beat the price, especially when Sierra is running one of their 35% off sales, which seem to happen fairly frequently.

They look perfect for my Jesses, the best price I can find in Canada is $79.

I just ordered Pelican 36L with HB rack. I will also try with my KTM Gobi bags to see what I like better.
Hey Sportrider,
Would you post a few pics of your ST with the Gobis installed please?
I'd also be interested in your opinion of the Gobis as I'm considering them for my ST....

I ended up selling the Gobis since I liked the Pelicans. I never got a pic with them on, but they were wider and heavier.

With THICKER walls. They are over 40" wide. Good idea but...

What is the width of the Yamaha panniers?
(I may have read it somewhere, but can't recall...)

Mine measure less than 34 3/4". In California we can Split / Share traffic and I do not have too many concerns while splitting. Yamaha did a very good job of tightly mounting these side cases though the rear corners are not supported. Easy On and Off if needed.

Mark really like the OEM Inserts and I just like them. I am searching for someone that can sew Inserts, two on each side, that will allow me to remove clothing, food, essentials, computer, etc. while being able to leave tools, tire repair kit, air pump, first aid kit, plastic bags, flash light, head lamp, spare jacket, spare gloves, etc. in the bottom of the side cases within their own removable Insert. The OEM Inserts are very well made and can be used for smaller travel luggage other than motorcycling.

Actually the Yamaha side cases aren't strictly parallel with the center of the bike, so they're a little narrower in the back: 34-3/4" at the back and 35-1/8" in the front.

These are the Muffin Top panniers I took off the DL650 I put them on Givi racks that are detachable. The panniers are bolted to the racks. I just used these panniers to go to Alaska and they are very rugged. I really like them.

I would like to know the overall width of this setup which IMO looks infinitely better than what Happy Trails came up with.

Good to know Mark. Mine are wider at the top by 1/4". So we can safely say what you originally posted, 35".
