[EDIT - CW] I'm 500 miles into a 10-day trip. And I just noticed the motor [EDIT - CW] is weeping oil. Is this something I should be really worried about? I don't want to lose all my oil on this trip and lock up my engine but I don't want to cut the trip short either for something that isn't really highly critical

Has anyone experienced a weeping sightglass for the oil?

Perhaps the oil that is weeping is from another area and pooling around the sight glass?
Is the sight glass chipped/cracked or maybe askew?

Can't say that I remember any leaking sight glasses and would also wonder if it isn't from someplace above. I'd just clean it and re-check at gas stops. Be a good idea to have a quart of oil handy till getting home if this is a long trip, but remember that the sight glass can be misleading.

Yeah that’s an odd one, although there does appear to be a rubber type seal around the glass, which like any seal could fail. Have you owned the bike from new. Has the clutch cover been off at some point ant not refitted correctly, thus leaking and running to that area.

If it’s just a slight weep, just keep an eye each fuel stop and address when home.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I do carry a qt of oil in my bags and will clean it before I start today and check it at stops.

To answer the other questions, yes I changed the clutch basket and it's sealed- it used to have a little leak on the underside of the cover but that has disappeared since I changed the gasket when I opened the clutch cover.

Eeeeeh this is worrying but I'm gonna keep going!

Remember that the bike has a low oil LEVEL light, so when that comes on, you are NOT in danger of burning up the engine, it's just a little low. Stop and top it off or just wait until the next gas stop and do it then if you don't see a dark line behind you...

It's gonna take a lot of weeping to change the oil level. Ride on.
I was more worried about the sight glass completely falling out. It is a small leak but alas i dont think it's coming from the sight glass, more likely around the clutch cover that i unsuccessfully repaired. Adding a little bit of oil each day should work just like before

Very important difference indeed!

Find the nook or cranny where the oil ultimately accumulates some before dripping to the ground. Stuff a paper towel or two there to absorb the oil. Each fuel stop if needed, replace with a fresh towel. This will also serve as a loss monitor before your oil light comes on.

a little dab of silicon around the edges of the glass might stop the weeping , at least till you can get a real fix .

A puff of baby powder will track down an oil track. There was a period where a few bikes got a longer guide pin on the clutch cover and it was preventing them from sealing properly.

Thanks for the suggestion, but The paper towel would rest on the exhaust... I Don't feel comfortable putting oiled paper towel on hot exhaust pipes. I'm just going to let it drip wherever it drips and power wash it and fix it after my trip.

I changed the pins when I changed my clutch basket. I even ground them down a little bit more just to make sure there was plenty of clearance with them, yet still a slow leak. Its manageable for now.
