Oil Filter leak - Operator Error?

Most oil filters I've used have a graphic printed on the side that show how they are supposed to be tightened. I don't think I've ever seen a torque spec on one. The Mobil M1-108 I just put on the other day said basically in sign language, "spread oil on o-ring, tighten until contact is made, then tighten for 3/4 turn". A Suzuki OEM filter for a V-Strom specified (if I recall correctly) two complete turns after initial contact. I once made the idiot mistake of tightening a non OEM filter to the Suzuki OEM specs; that was an interesting afternoon trying to remove it.

I've always just followed the filter instructions themselves rather than a torque setting. So far, none have ever leaked or fallen off.

Thanks for all the great and supportive advice I've received so far.

Understood about the use of the torque wrench.

For anyone hitting this thread and looking for the video, I've taken it down so unsuspecting viewers don't think the 3300 oil filter will work. If you really want to see it, send me a PM and I can send you a link. That said, I'm preparing for the full engine rebuild video... What could go wrong?

The use of channel lock... Channel Lock pliers; try to get a bite on the filter as close to the base as possible. Far less likely to simply crush the thing to death at the base than at the essentially empty end. ::008::
