OIl change on lift?

A friend gave me a hydraulic lift for the bike. It's not quite as nice as some and you almost need 2 people to get the bike on there securely but hey it was free. I plan on doing my oil change on there but then I realized I won't be able to lean the bike to assist with the oil drain because of the chock and it will be strapped on. However, I don't see where leaning in over is actually a requirement and I'm guessing most of the oil will drain while upright but I'm not sure. Obviously you don't need to get every drop out but the more the better. I've always leaned all of my other bikes over for full drain in the past. Any thoughts on this?

If it really needs to be on the side stand to drain most of the oil, I may just out it on the lift to remove/reattach the skid plate and do the rest off the lift but it's almost not worth the effort of putting it on the lift at that point.

Then again, I may drain what I can on the lift and measure the capacity of what comes out and make a decision on how to proceed at that point.

I believe the manual recommends that the bike be level on the center stand (or in your case on a lift). As the refill is just under 4qts I simply use the extra oil to flush the old then replace the drain plugs. -JEP-

No need to overthink this. 1) No need for use of any aux stand; maintenance like this is what the centerstand is there for. 2) No need for leaning the bike while draining oil; you might (or might now) get an extra ounce out, but the bike has quite a bit of undrainable oil anyway, so it really isn't signifiant. 3) No need to measure oil coming out; just put in the book amount (3.6 qt as I recall).

Only slight trickiness of a S10 oil change is not to chase oil level in the sight glass. Put the right amount in and go ride for a few days..... then let oil settle and confirm you're somewhere in the glass. It may read slightly low for awhile after the change and you don't want to pour oil in as you're watching the sight glass. If you feel it is low on oil, put a small amount in and ride for awhile and see what it shows.

What brand of lift did your friend give you ? Is it a table lift ? I have a Pitbull lift, it works great on my Goldwing but it will not lift a Tenere. I use the center stand for all my oil changes on the wing and the Tenere, but it sure would be nice to have a table lift, had a good chance to buy a very nice table lift cheap many years ago but I talked my one of my brothers into buying it instead.

By tilting the bike on the side stand what is acheived?
Is the extra oil draining from high up in the engine or down low in the sump over a baffle?

Why not leave the bike on the side stand for 10 minutes before using a center stand or pushing it up onto the table lift to drain the oil.
Problem solved.

I have a lift and do oil changes on it with no issue. To me, the bigger thing is to run the motor till just before pulling the drain plugs, so as much dirt is carried out as possible and it's not settled out.

Same here, although I was a die-hard for many years and refused to purchase a lift. I have had my cheap-o HF for about two years now and love it. Sure beats crawling around on the floor!

I've done mine on the side stand and I stand it straight up and over a bit to the other side after most of the oil has drained out. I do it a couple of times and probably another ounce or two comes out. Probably don't make much difference in the real world but it makes me feel better. Would love to have a lift though to eliminate sliding around on the garage floor.

Yep, done two on the lift now and works great. Doesn't kill my back or get me all over the floor and I fully remove the Altrider skid plate each time to mitigate messes as Ridemyst said, I use the extra oil not used from the 4 quarts to do a flush of sorts...may not make a bit of difference but it can't hurt.
