Am off to Brittany and Normandy on Thursday for a few days, hoping to see Mont St Michel, the submarine base at Sant Nazaire and some of the other WW1 & 2 sites in the region. Will post up some pics when time allows.
st michel mount is stunning, went to the sub base at saint nazaire in 1990 on a fzr1000 exup, me and the wife did normandy few yrs back to do all the museums and war graves from d-day that was a great week
I was in Falaise, Normandy just 10 days ago. Nice little town and it has the very impressive castle of William the Conquerer, (or William the Bastard as he is also known), sitting there above it all. Worth a trip if you are into castles and history. Enjoy the ride and I’m looking forward to your photos!
Hope you enjoy your trip, Boris. We were in the Somme last week on the meander down to the Alps. Flatiron Copse cemetary has always been our favourite quiet spot to contemplate the shocking waste of lives.
Talking about St. Nazaire, a neighbour of mine passed away, oh, must be about 15 years or so ago. I went to his funeral to pay my respects and there was a resume of his life read out. Turns out he was an ex-firefighter but more importantly perhaps was that he was a frogman in WWII and he was one of the frogmen who was part of Operation Chariot who got into the U Boat pens in St. Nazaire to plant explosives in order to effect one of the turning points in WWII, a real hero who never spoke about that part of his life at all!
My grandfather was the same way, rarely talked about what he did in WWII. Right before he passed, I found out that he too had been a frogman, but in the Pacific. He was part of Merril's Marauders.
