Interesting article in this months BIKE magazine. I notice it is advertised with a US $ price on the front cover, so I guess it is available in the states

A picture paints a thousand words, so I'll shut up and post the scans

Impressive stuff - read it and weep Mr GS rider

BigD

edit

I'm struggling to get the scans large enough

below are links to my photobucket account so you can see them in their native state, click on the second part of each link respectively

Looks like YAMAHA have taken a very conservative position with this motor.

I would guess that the motor could probably give more power and still be reliable.
It could probably do another 20-30HP without trouble I would say.

I wonder if YAMAHA may crank it up in it's TRX (rumours) guise and see how it goes.

Interesting.

IS bike the Mag that went out with a Tenere and came back dissing it saying it chewed oil, fuel and it was a POS?

Cheers
Graham

Hence the rumors of a 130hp version? I haven't heard about any magazine dissing the Tenere to that extent.

MCN UK took it ion a test and basically pretended it wasn't there, and then another UK Mag grabbed a few bikes and did a road race up the isle and basically said the bike was an oil chewing, petrol guzzling fail. I'll find out soon enough.

I think it was Bike that was dissing the S10 as being down on power in earlier tests. Now the same mag shows why - it's a bike for the long haul and designed not to be especially concerned with peak power figures.

And then fast forward to the US test and they have the Tenere winning the Sprint from 0-60mph over the GS, MTS, Tiger. Go figure.

Maybe they couldn't find the 256th map they saved on the MTS operating system.

I could buy a figure in the mid to high three second range, as I've seen in other rags, but not 4 sec. plus. Somebody didn't have the bike in the proper mode for the Bike Magazine test.
That said, I will definitely do the mod that defeats the lower gear power restriction if the price comes down. Not sure I would go so far as to do the PCV/autotune and pipe change right away.

Darn, and I bought the 4 year warranty. Looks like they knew they wouldn't be paying out anything on that. More riding less repairs. ::012::

Reassuring stuff there. Sounds like the bike was only very minimally maintained. At the very least suggests that we shouldn't worry so much about over-coddling this stout beast. Good stuff, way better than your typical 'long term' test bike sorta thing.

Do you think I have a 32GB memory card embedded in my brain?

I can't remember, It was tied to the TRX1200 or whatever it MAY end up being if anything, Magazine? Hell for Leather maybe?

There was also a bit of a "sportier" rumour going around regards the S10, which I can understand, but it was a couple of posts in threads somewhere in a bunch of forums I read.
None of which I have the time to find right now. Don't expect to see anything until the R1250GS Wet is released, or around that time.

Assuming YAMAHA is more serious than Suzuki that is.

Cheers
Graham

Anyway, it appears this engine has plenty "in reserve" to match whatever BMW come out with, if and when necessary. They DO need to get the weight down a bit though, if only to satisfy those people who make purchasing decisions off the spec sheet.

I'm not sure where they would take it from though... to lose weight from the engine would be a major redesign, or expensive materials. Swingarm seems over-engineered, maybe there... I can't see dropping more than about 30lbs if they prune a bit from a bunch of places.... hardly seems worth the effort, especially if there is any chance it will affect toughness and reliability, and/or increase the price significantly.

Probably by reducing the capacity to 900cc with another model >:D

I started on Yamahas years ago, but that was more of an accident of location than a conscious decision: my Dad came home with a new YG5 to replace the troublesome mini-bike that was beating us into the ground with endless maintenance needs. All the others in the area had Yamahas, so we did too.
However, I've stayed with Yamahas because they are always over built, and always hold up very well. That isn't to say others won't, but every Yamaha I've ever had that wasn't beat before I got it has been trouble free and quite high quality. The only troublesome ones were half dead when I got them, through no fault of their own. I would expect that the Tenere engine could easily produce another 35-40 HP ( in the yet-to-be-released "scary on dirt" or similar mode) and still require no additional maintenance. There are those out there that could either lose a 200 pound cast iron cannon ball in an empty room, or somehow break it. I'm not one of those people.

So: if they offer a "Jenny Craig" program for the S10, plus the aforementioned third mode, and lower first gear a little bit, I'll be a happy camper. I'm easy to please.
