I'm seeking any advice I can get. I've been up and down this forum, reading everything I can. I'm in the market to purchase my first motorcycle. I have my motorcycle license, through the MSF course, 32 years old, 6'3", 275 lbs... so a little starter bike isn't gonna do it for me. I figure buy once, cry once...I don't want to buy a little bike only to be disappointed 6 months from now and have to do it all over again. I want to go the adventure bike route because upright comfortable seating position and I can armor it up with crash bars for when I drop it.

I've been back and forth with a dealer, for a new 2016 ES for $11.5k. They want to tack on $1.5k in dealer admin fees......wtf. The out the door price is $14,200. Does that sound like I'd be getting ripped off with those admin fees? Kinda feels like dealer advertises low price to bring people in then tries to get you with the fees.

Depends what the "admin fees" are. If they're tax, DMV fees, etc then they're legit. If they're freight and prep, then they're less legit.
If the pre-tax/DMV price is $11,500, then your out the door price should be about $12,650 (110% of the purchase price).

I'd give the the dealer a chance to do the deal for you at $12,650 out the door. If they decline, simply send an email to dealers within 'x' miles of you (however far you're willing to travel) telling them what you want, and telling them you'll do the deal for $12,650. One of them will bite.

First, I gotta admit I like your bold courage to jumping on a big horse right out of the gate. And choosing a Super Tenere is pretty interesting. Would love to hear you out on that some day.

As for pricing....I've worn out my mantra on this forum since day one on the Super Tenere arriving in the U.S.A.
You are not getting"ripped off" if the Super Tenere was sold for MSRP countrywide. :)

The anxiety has nothing to do with the bike being worth every penny. Instead, it's that nagging feeling you might could get one cheaper. Lol

Just so you know, I have an old one. Many years old. I paid more years ago than you will for a brand new updated version today.

See how I see it?

A Super Tenere for your very first motorcycle. That's a cool story by itself. You're not even supposed to think it's cool!

I agree, the suggested price is $16,199 for the ES, and even at full price one heck of a motorcycle. I look at *all* the other similar offerings in the $13k up to $23k and really see no offering that is even close in value to what Yamaha offers. That said though, I hate dealers that offer low prices, then add on bullony fees. My dealer may not be cheapest on earth, but I payed "X" for the bike plus sales tax. I prefer that rather than getting a lowball price and paying $2,000 for this and that in hidden bullony.

Thanks for writing back, yes the admin fees do not include tax, title, license...which is why I didn't want to pay it, but that seems to be the game here in California. Thats why I was curious if $14,200 out the door was a decent price for a new 16 ES. I can't find another dealer that wont go below $13,900 for their list price, and I'm sure they add their fees to that...which is why I was looking hard at this particular one listed for $11,500.

Couldn't of said it better myself about the value of Yamaha.

Not sure I'd advise a Super Tenere for a first bike. I would look into renting some motorcycles and get experience.
I know, its in the back of my mind too... I've been looking at these for 2 years now, and I know I won't buy it if its something I don't want. Gotta start sometime.

If assembly is one of the fees $600 or so have them remove it and load the crate in the back of your truck. They will blow a gasket saying they can't do that, but refuse to pay for assembly. Last time I checked you don't pay for assembly of a new car or truck. It is pretty much expected to be operational and working for the MSRP. Assembly is a sales bump that can be removed. Its a joke if you ask me.

For what its worth my dealer here in Sandy UT has their 16ES for $13,500 and has non ES 2016's for $12,900. Of course there will be some fees added to that, about $500 I believe.

Where in California? Several members here will be able to help with advise on dealers if we have a better idea where in the state you are...

And I think that tacking on $1100 before tax, title and license is highway robbery, even in California (which practices their own brand of highway robbery...)

I'm in Long Beach, CA. Willing to travel a few hours if it means getting the right deal. I just got back from that dealer, and they are holding firm at $14,200 for everything (TTL $200 and admin $1,500) out the door. It is robbery.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't see how selling you a new ES for $2,000 less than MSRP including TTL is robbery. So they tacked on some BS admin fees to their lowball price, so what? Would you rather they added no fees and sold it for the MSRP of $16,199, plus TTL? The only thing that should concern you is what it will cost you for the bike bottom line, not how they got there.

Either that, or I am not understanding what you said. Are you saying they will sell you a new 16 ES for $14,200 for everything, including TTL? ^ If so, that is one heckuva deal.

Yes, $14,200 is out the door, everything included. I don't have any experience purchasing motorcycles, which is why I'm asking here, better to find out prior that its a good deal, then find out after that I got screwed. I just raise an eyebrow at the advertised price of 11,500 being increased by almost 25% when its all said and done. Not knowing what I'm going into, it feels like a bait and switch, but if that is standard practice, I'll deal with it.

I would ask for an explanation of what those administrative fees are for. Sure it sounds like BS but it's still below msrp. I see you are from California so buying a 48 state bike is probably illegal. FWIW there some leftover 2015 non ES bikes for sale here in the midwest for $12300 on cycle trader. Have a local dealer check Yamaha's inventory to see if he can get you a leftover 2015 or maybe even a 2014. This might be a way to save some money. Work out your best deal and ask them to include the extended warranty. Good luck with your purchase.

I too, on that long ago 2011 day, said "where do I sign". The best machine I've ever owned. Sure, one or two quirks, a little work on the ergonomics... but Wow. ::001::

The initial price is just to lure you in. They have no intention of selling it anywhere near that price. It is a pure marketing "strategy". If it is the dealer in the Long Beach area, that is their game. I was talking to them when I was looking for my Tenere, and walked away. Ended up finding mine several thousand less at the Thousand oaks dealer.

Bike trader (online) and the phone is your friend.

Mark

P.S. Just my opinion, but that place really gave me the "willies" about their sales and service department. The lack of knowledge in both departments was astounding.

TTL meaning tax, title, and license? If so, something is wrong with that number. Tax, title, and license is a whole lot more than $200, even if they ARE selling it at the $11,500 advertised price.

Here are the actual TTL fees, given my San Diego zip code. Long Beach and the vicinity should be close.
