Got the new Neotec in last week and thought I'd post up some info for anyone thinking about this lid. First off, let me say that Revzilla is awesome! This was my first purchase from them and will definitely be buying from them again. I ordered on a Sunday afternoon, and got a shipping notification at 8:30 am Monday morning - two days later my new lid was sitting by the front door. On to the helmet...

Weight:
For reference I'm coming out of a Joe Rocket 101 Carbon helmet, which is very, very light. The Neotec is noticeably heavier in my hand, but balanced so well, it's not evident while on my head.

Shield:
The shield mechanism is a quality affair, with nice detentes throughout its range, and rewards you with a satisfying 'ping' when you move it to the closed position. It seals up nice and tight, and I think will withstand any water-borne conditions thrown at it without allowing leakage. The Pinlock assembly is standard and a simple install, for which I wouldn't want to be without after having one for the past two years - they simply will not fog up.

The view out is wide in both the vertical and horizontal planes, so wide that it took a bit of getting used to - zero claustrophobia inside this lid. The added benefit is that the Pinlock insert is large enough the lines aren't in your immediate field of view, and I forgot it was even there. (I could see it on the visor of my JR)

Fit and Finish:
Fit and finish of the helmet are top-drawer, and the silver metallic paint gleams nicely in the sun. The internal visor comes down far enough to serve its purpose well, and is dark enough I didn't find myself missing my sunglasses at all. Even though I measured at the very edge of the range for a medium size, I went with it, and am very pleased with the fit of the helmet. It was, of course, a bit snug at first - but broke in nicely after only a few hours. With the plush interior lining, it is simply the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned. It just fits my head...

Ventilation:
Okay, I must admit I'm always dubious of claims of great venting from a helmet. I've owned many over the years, and quite frankly have never been impressed. This is the first helmet I've ever owned where I can actually feel air flowing through with the vents open. Pop the simple, but elegant front vent back two clicks and you've got some air moving through there! The chin vent supplies additional flow, and like all mechanisms on this helmet, has a quality feel during operation.

Noise:
I've ridden with earplugs for longer than I can remember, but the Neotec is certainly quiet. I installed my Sena SMH-10 with zero fuss, and rode with my usual background music piped in - except now it's not background music - I can actually hear the songs in living color. I found myself reducing the volume on the Sena in fact - something I never did with the JR. For reference: I could clearly hear Neal Peart's intricate hi-hat work at the beginning of La Villa Strangiato at 75MPH indicated. With the music turned off, I was pleased with the ambient noise levels. Wind noise was evident, but nicely muted, and only slightly increased with all of the ventilation flowing. (Did I mention you can actually feel the ventilation - not just hear it?)

Chin Bar:
This is my first modular helmet - I've always been a full-face guy. I must admit it's nice to pop the front up for some additional cooling while in stop-and-go riding. The red latch button is easily operated with a gloved hand, and the mechanism clicks nicely into place when moving to the up or down position. I rode for a while with the chin bar in the up position to experience it, and noticed no adverse effects below 50 MPH. Above that I could feel the wind pulling back on my head.

All in all I couldn't be more pleased with the helmet, and if it has a downside I haven't found it yet. I did over 250 miles on my first outing with it, and was quite pleased. I'm under no illusion that even at Revzilla's price this helmet is a major investment - $596 delivered. It's certainly the most expensive helmet I've ever owned, but after riding it, I feel justified in the investment. Can you get a helmet that provides equal (or greater) protection for less? Sure. But I appreciate the quality Shoei built into this helmet, and the bells and whistles sure make for an enjoyable riding experience...

Thanks for the review. I'm wonding what the internal shape is. You seem to be comfortable in this helmet, so is your head shape more of an oval (long from front to back) or round like a BB (short from front to back/'earth-shaped?'

Thanks!

Excellent write up and couldn't agree more with all your observations. I've had mine for a month or so and love it. It comes at a price but it's a great lid and I have no regrets.

Glad you like it! ::001::

I'm probably a classic 'intermediate oval' - definitely longer front-to-back, but helmets built for true ovals do not work on me.

I too have one of these and it's a great helmet in all respects. It's my helmet of choice whenever I go out.

I recently discovered one issue with it though: Make sure the chin vent is closed if you run into heavy rain, if not, rain will enter the vent and splash on the backside of the shield. Things get pretty interesting when that happens. It won't happen in a gentle downpour I don't think but I ran into a storm front with very heavy rain and had many big drops on the back side of the shield as soon as it hit and it was a chore to see where I was going there for awhile. Otherwise, great lid. ::008::

Creggur, how has this helmet been so far? I was looking at this helmet and the C3 today. I'm pretty much convinced this is going to be my new helmet after comparing them side by side at a local shop. It fits my head like a glove, where the C3 had some weird stuff going on inside of it (appeared to be loose fabric that would get caught up when i put it on) and did not seem to fit my head very well. I liked the very stiff detents on the face shield. It seems like it will stay where I put it.

After 6 months and about seven thousand miles including one week of over 1600 miles I'm still as enamored with this helmet as I was when I wrote this review. All of the controls on the helmet are still nice and tight, the visor detents, vent detents, and chin-bar mechanism still work as they did when it came out of the box. As it's broken in, it's only gotten more comfortable (which I didn't think possible at the time) - and I'm still amazed at how well-balanced it feels on my head. You can feel that the helmet is heavier in your hand than a regular full-faced, but once on your head the weight simply disappears. I've done 600+ mile days with zero neck fatigue, and something else I've noticed since writing my initial review is the aerodynamics when you do a lane-check - the helmet is still quiet with zero pull on your neck even when the helmet is turned sideways to the wind.

For reference I'm riding with a CalSci shorty so my head is actually in the breeze when riding - when I duck down out of the airflow with earplugs in the helmet is dead-silent. I've also ridden in some pretty nasty downpours, and as long as the vents are closed (especially the chin vent) there was zero water intrusion and with the Pinlock installed zero fogging. Still haven't found a downside to this helmet...

I've had the Neotec for a full season now and am really impressed. All of Shoei's and Webbikeworlds comments/claims seem to be backed-up well. I have only one issue which will probably require some Arrowstich helmet liners. The top portion of the liner has narrow strips that ride against the top of your head and fashon longitudinal grooves in your hair, which are a bear to comb out (with my hair). :D 8)

Other than that very small nitpick, I'm duly impressed with fit, finish, quality of materials and function of the helmet. Well done, Shoei.

I just ordered mine yesterday. I did not see it posted on this forum, but there is a group purchase going on via ADVrider and ST-owners forums. Significant savings.

I expect that I will like this lid as much as everyone does. I've been very satisfied with my X-11 for the past 80k+ miles. My head deserves the best insurance that I can get for it.

I really fancied one of these, but found an issue for me that is not uncommon.

I have an Small - Extra Small head, and many helmets, although available in these sizes seem to use the same chin strap, even on the tightest adjustment it hangs loose below my chin, the rest of the Helmet fits fine, but a loose chin strap makes the helmet useless for me.

Had to buy a Schuberth C3 instead.

The Schubeth is a fantastic helmet. Let us know what you think of it.

I have 12,000 miles now on my Neotec including a 21 day 9,000 mile Alaksa and back trip. Wearing your helmet everyday, all day (12 hours or more) for 19 days of riding is the unltimate test. LOVE THIS HELMET. Love the fit (round oval) love the flip down shade screen, love that modular flip up at quick stops, vents great, reasonably quiet, not heavy by any means incredible quality and a very secure latching system that is easy to unlatch. I have worn Arais for 20 years and never thought i would change. This helmet changes everything.

On the shadescreen, I thought it was pretty much a poser fighter jock thing but it is oh so practical. I wear glasses so I use both clear and sunglasses. I do a lot of ealry morning departures and found i had to stop to change from clear to sunglasses an hour into the ride, a real pain. The neotech I just start out in the dark and flip it down when the sun comes up. Cloudy days in and out of the sun the shade just goes up and down to suit the conditions. No carrying two screens, clear and dark and having to trade out at night. This feature was the suprise bonus of the helmet

I also ride with a CalScience windscreen and can ride with faceshield up and have only the slightest breeze in my face. What a great combinaton in warm weather.

Highly recommended and well worth the money

I like the White, Coastie. Congrats on the new lid - hope you like it as much as I like mine.

Went for a short ride in the Neotec today. It's a very similar to the RF1100 visually, but when worn they are completely different helmets to me.

Weight is about the same.
Comfort is much better on the Neotec.
Vision seems much better on the Neotec. I felt my head mobility was improved.
Noise level was about the same unless the vents were open, then it's a bit noisy.
Venting is outstanding!
I will never go without a pinlock or sunshade ever again. This is what sets the helmet apart.
I love the flip up visor. I took the bike to the car wash and hosed it down and forgot I had the helmet on.
If you have a Shoei shaped head, and considering a modular helmet, you will not be disappointed.

I have a feeling you just cost me some cash. The Bell Revolver I have is very noisy with or without the vents closed. The helmet fits and feels good and I love the features. If I had all of the same features and a quiet helmet it would be perfect which is what you just described.
