Hi everyone,

Just looking into the s10 as my next stead, very tempted by the ZE variant. Seems to be a reliable and dependable bike from the forums which is a good sign.

Other options I am looking at is the Explorer and the GS. I am leaning towards the S10 though.

Any advice on what to look for?

Welcome, from sunny Zurich. ::008::
I think you will find a few ex-TEX owners here, not too many with good things to say about the TEX though.

Welcome to the site Photorex ::008::

Had 10 GS variants in the last 10 years or so..and a new Triumph Explorer...

Happy now with my 2014 S10 ZE ::022::

Not much to look for at all, other than the colour you want ::008::

No major issues or flaws, in fact not sure there are even any minor ones on the 2014+ models.

Spokes tarnish over time even if the bike is quite well looked after, and will go horrible fairly quickly if they are not pampered, mine are still fairly good at 3 years / 18000 miles but losing the shine in places.

I had a 1200GS and by 18,000 miles it had needed about £1500 of repairs, luckily all but £200 under warranty, but it seemed there was always something not right with the bike at any one time, and the latest model has had more than its fair share of exploded / engines / clutches / gearboxes - but I am sure it rides real well, I think BMW do build amazing road bikes - just they build them badly (IMO)

A mate of mine has the Explorer, it too has had a lot of work done (Cylinder Head / Final Drive Assembly and Engine Management System) in 2 years / 5,000 miles - but I understand they are generally OK once the initial bugs have been sorted.

I think the S10 is the best long term prospect as long your not bothered about performance over 100mph, it is fast enough up to 3 figure speeds, comfy and handles far better than a bike of its weight should do.

It works well on all roads being comfy on motorways, handling well on good sweeping A-Roads, and being a joy on tight mountain switchbacks, it will also handle bumpy back lanes / gravel tracks or anything else you encounter or are skilled enough to tackle.

it is not hard or overly expensive to pick up a bit more power with a different exhaust / flash if you feel the need, but will still be behind the likes of the Multistrada by quite a margin, but I am glad I had some work done to boost mine a little bit.

I do plan to buy a "Modern Classic" sportsbike at some point to scratch the speed itch once in a while.

Welcome.
Ditto Rasher.
Had one of the first GSA 1200's to land in what was originally SPC dealer in Alton . Had it from late 2005 to 2010 and went across off-road Spain and Portugal and handled some serious off-roading with ease. but heaven help if anything went wrong !

The S-10 I've owned from 2011 till present is bullet proof and solid. Ergonomics aside ( I think this IMO is maybe the only single area where BM excel - my opinion only ) . My S-10 has cost me next to nothing in running costs over the years and basically just petrol ! Pound for pound, it blows the beemer out the water ! Fun for fun, maybe the same I'd say as I have not yet compared the latest LC with the latest S-10 with back to back comparison rides.

If you are ever near Swindon, please feel free to pop in for a cuppa and have a chat. If you need further convincing, chat to Nick alias Somerset , and he'll chip in his 2p worth too !!

The main thing to look out for is the 'Yamaha' name on the tank, it's all good after that. Avoid the blue & white circle at all costs, it'll let you down and empty your pockets...

Thanks Rasher and Xylo, that's a really helpful comparison. One of the most noticeable things on this forum is how much actual riding and modding people do rather than moaning about faults and recalls. I commute all year round, want a bike to tour 2 up on and then also have a bit of fun with but will be dependable. At the moment I'm on a Dl650 strom and her on the back wants a bit more comfort, I'm getting annoyed with chains and want to go back to either belt (ex bmw f800st) or shaft and it's generally a bit buzzy and unreliable.

Xylo66, I live up in Fairford so pretty close to Swindon, I might take you up on that offer at some point!

I am only about 8-9 miles from you in Carterton, pop in some time if you want to see my bike and some of the mods ::008::

Your Mrs should like it, mine reckons it is pretty good, not quite as good as the GS I had before, but apart from that she reckons better than all the sports tourers I had before, should be a lot better than a Strom ::008::

The power delivery is also perfect for two-up, the Mrs hated the GS as it was a little peaky so overtakes involved a drop of a cog more often and the lurch as the bike came on cam, on the S10 I could roll on a gear higher and she barely noticed.

You will lose a bit of range, I reckon the Strom is about 10% better on fuel on average riding at similar speeds, so where I say I have an easy 240 mile range on the V-Strom and maybe 270 if I took it real steady, the S10 is more like an easy 225, and maybe 250 if going easy.

Hi Rasher, that sounds good I might see about popping over. I've been made aware of a ZE with 30,000 miles on at around £8k which sounds nice, any thoughts on going for something that's been run up the mileage so quickly? It's been fully yam services and looks virtually spotless.

The range seems ok, my vstrom has always got around 240 miles per tank so if you get 225 I would be happy with that trade off.
Blade in Swindon have a ZE demonstrator so at some point in the next few weeks I will throw a leg over that and try it.

These bikes seem pretty bulletproof, so 30k would not worry me - just check the expensive 24k valve check has been done ::008::

Also the usual checks, has it been toured a lot, or just commuted in the snow and ice, but assuming it is in very good condition it would not bother me too much, a fair few here have topped 50k and a couple gone past 100k with no major problems, not heard of a single big failure.

A Hello from Itton, just Monmouth side of Chepstow.

May be worth giving Fowlers a bell, they had 20 plus 14 spec tens unregistered at 9500 earth pounds, I bought one, its a lot of bike for that money and the 14 is pretty much the same spec as the new 15 bike. I would rather pay another 1500 for a basic NEW bike than a specced up 30k machine.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

They bought 26 from Yamaha, 5 blue, 21 grey, the blue ones all sold instantly, they painted 5 up in fancy blue/white speedblocks but they were another £1000 on top, they registered 5 grey ones for a press tyre test for Avon, who paid rental on those bikes, they had some of those back in at 9k-ish, so the remainder were all grey. I would have chosen the grey anyway, its groovy! ::012::

Just try them all - many of us have & we voted for the rugged dependability of the S10.

The TEX has had it's problems, but most riders I have spoken with say Triumph looked after them well, at least here in the UK, & sorted out all the issues, albeit with several weeks down time. So if you don't mind the size of the beast, it warrants being on the agenda.

BMW - well what can I say. The top selling Adventure bike in the world, but unless the Bavarians find a way to improve their reliability, right across the range, then nothing will ever tempt me back. Mine was 3 months off the road last summer, with a ludicrous list of issues & parts on back order from suppliers. However smooth the dealers may be, however sound the warranty, nothing can ever prepare you for the hassle down time like this creates. Both Triumph & BMW seem to be using us as quasi beta testers.

Mine is a 2014 white ES/ZE. Everything works a treat, as it should. The bike is well sorted & there is some great advice available on here when it comes to personalising your ride.

Keep safe .............. KEN

What's the difference between the 2014 and 2015 s10's - I wasn't aware there was. I am popping over to fowlers soon so will check in with them and see what's going on. I definitely want an ES/ZE spec bike - happy to buy without farkles and add at my leisure
