Model Designation?

Before picking up my S10 yesterday, I stopped at my insurance agent's office to get the insurance ID card. When she asked me for the make and model I told her "Yamaha XT1200Z" and gave her the VIN given to me by the dealer. She told me that the VIN was "wrong" meaning it wasn't in her system. We called the dealer and verified the VIN and she printed ID cards with it anyway.

After getting home, I was flipping through the owner's manual and realized that "XT1200Z" wasn't mentioned anywhere. Any references to the model stated "XTZ12B". What's up?

Good question. I noticed that too as my sales contract lists it as the XTZ12B and yet the website calls it a XT1200Z. I think there was a similar model number oddity in the case of my FJR as well.

I had a hell of a time trying to insure mine for the similar reasons. Finally got coverage on 4th attempt (different companies for each try), and even then, they couldn't confirm the model. Wasted an hour of ride time yesterday!

The Yamaha documents we got with the new bikes and the designation on the Yamaha Dealer System data, all use the XTZ12B as the model. They actually add one more letter, XTZ12BL being blue and XTZ12BB for the black models.

Thanks fredz, I suspected -- after the fact -- that it was something like that. I even saw the XTZ12BB written inside my owners manual and thought, "nah, that can't be it!"

Is it because of Florida rules? Also have you tried Nationwide. They gave me a good deal.

Perhaps: I know uninsured motorists doubles any policy that you have here. Do you think there is a problem with people staying insured in this state? In Florida, you do not need motorcycle insurance unless you have a loan. Wouldn't you think that since it's not mandatory that rates would reflect that? I've been a progressive customer for over 25 years until today.

CLEM WTF? I am only paying $175 for coverage with Geico. My bike and my son's XT250 are both on the policy and the total annual premium is $272. Something is not right with your Progressive premium. BTW, the "D" in the VIN means dual sport. Progressive cannot just arbitrarily deem it a sport bike unless it is designated so by the manufacturer. I would look elsewhere and cancel the Progressive policy when you find a more reasonable rate.

I have never in my life spent more time of the phone than I did today with Insurance companies. Both Progresssive and Geico REFUSED to budge on their classification of the bike. Both said they considered it a sport bike. I dropped my progressive policy, and I was with them for over 25 years. I still have yet to collect one time on the policy, from the looks of it, I won't. It took them 30-40 minutes to get a fix on the vin number, both companies had a tough time locking it down. Geico gave me a printed quote ($352 with uninsured motorists which doubles it), then 2 hours later retracted it and said it was a sport classification.

Maybe you can try again with the XT12B model designation info and be sure to point out the "D" in the VIN where the manufacturer has designated the bike as a Dual Sport. I realize that this is a new model and the systems are not set to provide automatic quotes. This means that agents have to do it manually and, in your case, they are not getting it right. Try calling late at night when a different crew is working?

I called my State Farm agent back today to have her try changing the model from XT1200Z to XTZ12B or just Super Tenere and neither of those came back as valid either. She told me it would probably cost less than the FJR I traded in so I won't worry until I hear from them to the contrary.

Kinda how my discussion went with my SF agent as well, although the felt it would still be more than my FJR because it was 4 years newer.
