Looking at picking up a second bike

Good morning, I am currently riding a Triumph Trophy SE and absolutely love it. On a recent trip my zumo took me down a goat trail in Northern California. The TTSE made it, but got me thinking about an adventure bike as a second ride. I sort of enjoyed the goat trail and thought it would be fun to find more of these back, lousy maintained roads.

I am just here learning about the super tenere. As I will not be getting rid of my triumph, I have been looking at the 1st generation s10.

If the right deal comes along, well there might be two rides in the stable ::015::

Welcome aboard.

A lot of us here came from touring and sport touring bikes, with the intent of keeping both. Some did, but probably most of us realized the Tenere is a really good sport tourer that isn't afraid of the end of the road.

I have never even seen one of those....I think. The '12 and newer remind me of a ST1300 & BMW love child. I may have seen one and misidentified it. ::001::

I ride a first generation Concours and after taking the Tenere through some twisties last Sunday I was pretty well surprised. Even my wife commented on how smoothly the bike went through the curves. The Connie is here for a little wile yet, but I don't know how long.

I have a '17 S10 and just sold my '15 Trophy. To be fair I also have an '11 Sprint GT that I don't expect to part with any time soon, not that I ride it much. I really liked the Trophy but as soon as I bought the S10 I was pretty much done riding it. If you can swing it buy a '14 or newer S10, it really is a better bike than the Gen1. Keep both for a while and see how it works out, may be the perfect combination for you or you may find that you don't ride one of them enough to be worth keeping it. S10 is surprising, it 's a much better and sportier touring bike than you'd expect.

Wow...prefer the s10 over the concours? My bike before the Trophy was an 09 concours. Was a great bike. That is quite the compliment to the s10.

You guys are killing me with how much you are blown away by this bike. I am growing more intrigued. I have been reading about the second generation improvements and would prefer to go that way if nothing more then factory cruise. Triumph ruined me on that. ;D

::026:: I love the FJR; wonderful power. I like the way it went through corners; stable as a rock. BUT....With the Tenere, I was expecting just a bigger/better KLR. Could not have been more wrong. Good power, good features, and surprisingly great handling. Like Crew Chief found out, even two-up, the bike transitions through curves with surprising ease. The FJR was exactly what I expected, the Tenere turned out to be what I wanted/needed. ::001::

It's still early, but I really think so. My Concours is a '95 first generation bike. I've ridden the later ones, but the riding position is just too cramped for my old knees. The older bikes are great sport tourers and can eat up the miles and they do curves well, but they are also very top heavy. Slow speed parking lot maneuvering is not great. The Tenere seems to do quite well at both.

Part of the motivation from the Concours to the Triumph was a more comfortable seating position. Glad to hear that the s10 is comfortable for you as my knees are also getting older too and that is all part of my thought process.

I was out for a long ride in traffic today and I actually thought about this thread while I was out. I'm a fan of this bike. I like nearly everything about it. I'm also a fan of Triumphs triples and I don't think this engine matches them. I don't think I'll be trading on a Triumph anytime soon, but if this engine was more like the 1050's, it wouldn't hurt my feelings any.

Maybe I'm getting old, but....how much power do we need? I haven't had my Tenere as long as many of y'all, but I have yet to have the thought "gee, I wish I had more power". The FJR has, in my opinion, the most USEABLE power in a motorcycle; any gear, any speed, twist the throttle....gone....without drama. I ride in "S" all of the time. I have to be careful with throttle, or the back tire breaks loose; and I weigh 310lbs. That being said, if I was at altitude, with the bike loaded like a mule, trying to get to an all-u-can-eat seafood buffet before it closes, I might wish for more power. But, that trifecta isn't very likely to happen soon. MY Tenere, so far, has done everything that I need/want her to do. ::001::

To me it's not the shear acceleration, but the torque curve. The triples seem to always be in the right gear. It's been awhile since I rode an FJR. If I'm remembering it right, I think it would outrun the triples, but it would be fussier about what gear it's in when you ask for the power. I know the Tenere is fussier than the triples are. That doesn't mean I don't like the Tenere. The guys pointed to the well scrubbed tires from edge to edge on my bike tonight. It puts a smile on my face when it does that. I find it unlikely that I'll spend much time in sport mode on this bike, because I just don't need to accelerate like that, but a guy that's used to the low end grunt of the triple may miss it a bit.

I never use the power the S10 have, only the torque.
I always ride in "T" mode, and have for the past 2200 miles, done 51.51 mpg ::) (this is from new)
So I don't use the power at all.....so the engine is fine for me. I would like more that the engine was more silent, rather than more power.. :)
Comming from a Honda Transalp, this engine rattles a lot.. ??? (I know the S10 is supposed to do that)
