A friend of mine was a willing participant on this little experiment.. This is ONLY to show how deep and how long a tire might last. Don't do this at home. We installed a rear tire that was at the wear bars. This would be the 'normal responsible' time to replace a rear tire. After we installed this tire, he then road this tire another 3000 miles until it was truly not safe to be on the road and his life didn't depend on continuing staying on this tire.. So time for another..... but before that, I took the bike out in front of the shop and did a two minute burn out on the same tire to see how much more rubber was left on the tire... Holy cow, this tire still had a TON of rubber left... Not that I would recommend riding a tire to the cords for all kinds of safety reasons, if someone absolutely had to, this tire can keep on trucking for a very long time.. I don't need to say this, but don't try this at home, and don't ride the tire past the normal wear bars. Don't be dumb...
Here is the tire right after the two minute long burn out. You can just begin to see the carcass of the tire. You can also see the profile of rubber that had to come off to get down to this level. Its really nuts this tire has so much rubber on way-way-way past the wear bars. This tire is a beast. These pictures are reference photos only, for education only. Do not ride a tire to this point, EVER!
There was probably more than a cup of rubber out in the parking lot and stuck to the bike. Tons of rubber... This tire has approximately 16.5 + thousands miles of street dirt use, and a 2 minute burn out on it.. Thought you might like to see and hear about our little experiment....
