Back from a 2400 mile "test ride" on the NC750X. Day 1 was 902 miles in 14hours 35 minutes from WI to Cobleskill NY. Day 2 was mountain backroads through the Catskills and the Berkshires in the morning then back on the highway to Cape Cod. Days 3 and 4 were spent doing a little local riding on the Cape then it was time to head home. Day 5 was an easy ride to Ashtabula OH and day 6 was thunderstorms, heavy crosswind, Chicago traffic and high humidity. The bike did it all well. Highway speeds were 78-81 mph and at those speeds my mileage dropped down to 55mpg. The bike had plenty of go left when cruising at 80 and could easily pull away from any bothersome traffic. The stock seat is adequate, not the best certainly not the worst. I've got say I am sure that the word "Interstate" was nowhere in Honda's design brief for the bike yet it does it quite well and reasonably comfortably. Wind and weather protection are very good since the addition of the Givi windshield, almost too good in the heat and humidity. The uber smooth and easy going nature of the engine make for a relaxing ride on the highway. Riding the mountain backroads the bike is really in it's element. This is no Superbike so there is some flex to the front end and frame, when you're riding bumpy back roads the bike is incredibly forgiving of being ridden too hard for the conditions. It does not have the suspension travel of an S10 or Adv bike so you are more aware of bumps but the bike stays planted and secure on the road. I wish the bike had cruise control but the Throttlemeister bar ends did help and at speed I was only 160 miles before reserve. When riding in 30+ mph crosswinds on I80 in Ohio I was reminded it's only a 750 and while never intimidating it did require constant attention. It did piss me off when a guy on a new model GoldWing blew by me with 1 hand on the bars! Those are pretty minor complaints for a budget bike used in a way I don't think Honda ever intended.
I am not saying this is the best bike ever or that it is the end all be all. What I am saying is if a guy wants a lighter bike that can do it all it's a pretty good choice. Even better it does it on regular gas and doesn't cost a lot of money to buy or own.
