Dude its a 2022 with 18200 Km the only service are oil changes (5) all within the Mfg. recommended interval
Wow that’s only 11,000 miles, hopefully you have a good dealer that will be able to get Yamaha to fix it under warranty, I believe it was caused by some kind of factory defect. Thankfully it happened close to home.
My 2018 ES with 60,000 miles has so far been mostly trouble free.

Cycle - all I can say is that the dealer was also in shock, I spoke to another dealer that he thinks that Yamaha will do the right thing (I hope so )

Almost looks like there was a loose part bouncing about in there. Maybe a bolt backed out somewhere? Maybe one of the bolts holding the sprocket to the exhaust cam? That’s not even a likely spot for damage if the timing chain had failed.

Don't let it get to you. I'm about to hit 102,000 miles, and have never experienced any catastrophic failures (or even less than catastrophic failures). I'm not alone in that boat; plenty of others have the same "no drama" experience with this bike. It's about as bulletproof as a bike can reasonably be expected to be, but there isn't much point to a bunch of guys posting things like "yep, ten years in and she's still running great".

So i just heard back from my dealer and he told me that a decompression pin in the cam (region) broke. Was told that they could not find the part so for know they're stopping any more work on the bike they have a call into Yamaha tech to see what to do next.

Tabasco for the win! (as if there was any doubt....)

Fingers crossed Yamaha makes you whole again.

So do you recon that there is something that I could have done to avoid this ?
I wouldn't think so either. Manufacturer's defect. Even Yamaha has an 11% failure rate. 11% of a lot of bikes, is a lot of bikes.

WOW Sierra where did you get this information
One of the last reliability polls that someone had on here. And I've seen 11% on two different polls. 'Cuz it got me to wondering. BMW has a higher failure percentage, but they likely sell less bikes than Yamaha. (but I don't actually know) There's a shit load of Yamaha's out there. A small percentage of a large number could be a very large number. More than a larger percentage of a smaller number. It doesn't matter to me, because my experience with Yamaha has been flawless since '79. My experience with BMW started flawless, but ended in shit.

Well, wouldn't that be what caused the hole. AKA: exit would.
That is what caused the hole. The pin probably came out or broke, pinched between the front wall and the cam lobe and then punched out the front.
It’s “just” parts at this point (probably). My concern are the little parts that fell inside the motor to the bottom. Or ‘hiding’ somewhere. Those are the small things that will seriously blow it up again if ALL the little parts are not found. I believe most if not all the cam parts (decompression) are super hard parts. So they won’t get crunched up and caught in the filter. These parts break other parts.
I would love to see photos under that valve cover. Can you post some ?

Hopefully you can get an exhaust cam and valve cover (I can’t tell if that hole is in the head). It might be “just” replacing parts.

That sure would be nice if yamaha picked up this tab………. WOW
