Just ordered my Scorpion Exo 900 Transformer helmet $202.46 check out the video. The helmet weighs 4lbs 1oz I picked up white for better visibility on the road.
Vince, I've never really considered a modular helmet, but that Exo 900 is pretty cool looking. I will be looking a little closer at that one. Thanks for posting.

Yeah that's bad cough you have there I can hear it from here! I think only a bike ride with a new helmet on will cure it. ;D

UR welcome Paul I run a Exo700 right now and have since 07 and love it but always wanted a modular just couldn't get past the price of those puppies. The discount I told you about is what did it for me.

Co-worker of mine got the EXO-900 a short while ago. I checked it out and it is a cool helmet. He did have a little issue with it fogging on him this morning (it seals really well in full face mode), and opened the face shield to defog but it frosted over on him (it was about 22 degrees this morning). Other than that he loves it!

Question from an adventure touring newb...

How do these DS lids compare to standard full-face options for longer duration road touring?
I know that I will be utilizing my Super Ten for more on-road than off.

Still on the fence as to which route I should take...

A normal full face will/should be quieter than a DS lid so in theory should fatigue the rider less. That said I rode from Newcastle to Portsmouth (or was it plymouth? furthest south one.. shame on my map memory) overnight on a GS1150 wearing an Arai TourX (mk1) and I didnt feel anymore knackered than I did riding similar distance in France with a Shoei XR1000 (on a 999!) As long as your not buffeted badly (ala nearly everyone on a XT660Z) then I think a decent DS lid wont be a prob.. but its your money and your head. I've got a choice of lids and nearly aways wear the DS Hornet (but hankering after warmer weather when I'll wear my newly aquired Peltor openface.

This is great news. Bell is well on its way back to the top of the market. Watching sprotbiketrackgear's videos from the factory tell the story. Bell tests 2% of their helmets to exceed all safety standards. The transitions visors are also a great option.
The new Bell Revolver is out now. 8)

I understand they are also going to have a modular dual sport helmet soon.

Looks like another great option. I am more interested in the DS option though.

I've been trying out my new Arai XD3 for the past several weeks.....very quiet, almost as quiet as my Shoei X-11 (at least on my 1050 Tiger), much better venting and almost no visor 'lift' at speed, in fact not really noticeable at all, and just a little bit when turning your head back straight. No whistle out of the spoiler vents either.

The adjustable visor position is nice, as is the 'deployable' chin spoiler. The liner is very well made and comfortable.

The only real complaint I have is that the D-rings are slightly smaller than any other helmet I have used of late....I always stick a finger in the d-rings when putting on a helmet and these pinch my finger!

I'm happy so far.

Good report, are you riding with a good wind shield?

Re: Helmets - Dual Sport - Mini-review Schuberth C3

I received this new lid last week, and with work and weather, today was the first time I've had to try it out.

First of all, it was $699, so it had better be a darn good helmet.

I've been riding with half-helmets for years and wanted the increased protection of a modular, full helmet: Modular, because of the convenience and full, because of the protection. I had been disappointed in my other mod helmet, the HJC Sy_max II, primarily due to wind noise. I had not been able to secure good ear protection: My left ear canal is larger than the right, so I was unsuccessful in finding anything that cut the noise, and I tried everything. Including something made by an audiologist...it cut the noise, but was too uncomfortable to wear after an hour.

So, the C3: First of all noise: Very quiet...due to the neck flap, there is no wind noise. There is a little buffeting, at freeway speed, from wind coming over the top of the windshield. If I get my head down out of the headflow, there is very little noise...I could hear the engine just fine (a small, not loud Honda twin)...Schuberth says it reduces road noise to 85db....sure seemed like it.

The venting is great...at stops I have to crack the shield and in riding low speed mtn roads, I keep the shield open all the way, giving me the fit and "out there" of a half-helmet, with the protection of a full helmet. I also like the sun visor....easy to use with gloves and easily adjustable. I would like a little bit of a visor, when riding into the sun, even with sunglasses and the sunscreen down, I could see that being a problem.

Headshape is more rounded...my head is more narrow so after 2 hours I felt the inner liner on my forehead...and it started to get a bit uncomfortable, so if you do buy one, wear around the house for awhile to be sure of fit. Most supply houses selling them offer free shipping both ways on exchange if needed. I bought the one listed for my head size and measured it a few times to be sure...and still, the shape may not be to your liking.

I felt like my peripheral vision was cut down a bit....but that might have just been the transition from the half-helmet. I regularly check blind spots, so I'm normally turning my head a lot anyway.

The strapping mechanism is absolutely the best: Easy to use with and without gloves...every helmet mfr should adopt this technique...soft material between cushioning the neck from the strap, and the strap just kind of fits into a plastic holder....piece of cake.

It is supposed to be lighter than most helmets and I could not see the difference with the HJC...so, I have no opinions on that.

Bottom line...$699 is a lot of money, especially if you're only protecting your skull and hearing....

Schuberth C3

http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/schuberth-c3

The C3 rated at 3 out of 5 stars for safety in the UK. Nolan seems to be the safety leader in their tests.

Face stayed latched on impact 97% of time
Good rating for front and top impacts
Poor rating on side impacts
Average rating on rear impact

On the other side of the coin Motorcycle Consumer News liked everything except a leaky face shield and the super high price.

The stock windscreen on the Tiger 1050 is somewhat minimal...it breaks the windload off your chest, but you end up with alot of turbulent air right at helmet level....so it's a great test environment of how quiet a helmet is (or isn't). Both my Shoei X-11 and Arai XD-3 pass with flying cololrs.

Great link for helmet tests and ratings!! Yes, the Nolan N102 and N103 seem to be the leader. I'm now having second thoughts about My Shoei Multitec....

At least the Multitech is rated very good on front, top, and rear impacts. Side impacts seem to be a sore spot for many modulars.

For those looking at this site in the USA and Canada, DO NOT look at the non-modular ratings. Modulars are unchanged from European models but the full-face helmets are built to Snell standards here and can be very different. This may change with the new rating systems for 2010. Snell 2010 requirements are more compatible with the ECE standards. For more info

Re: Arai XD3 Review

Picked up an Arai XD3 at the IMS Saturday, tested it today.

Riding conditions: 80 F, sporadic 20 to 30 mph winds, KLR with a factory HIGH windscreen with Laminar Lip, sitting, standing, up to 80 mph.

Sitting behind a good windscreen:

- Quiet, less wind noise. Big improvement over other inexpensive helmets I have worn
- Amazingly quiet with the face shield up
- Very good air flow through the vents
- Cross winds moved the KLR but not the helmet
- No problem looking full left/right
- Excellent peripheral vision

Standing up, 80 mph: This is where it shined

- Still pleasingly quiet, some mild wind wistle
- NO buffeting looking forward unless I raise my chin, and not bad then
- Suprisingly little buffeting looking left/right. Noticeable but nothing that snatched my head.
- Immediatly standing up above the wind screen looking straight forward did NOT snap my head back

General Observations:

- Obvious all around quality
- Lite weight
- Good fit on my egg
- The long visor works great when the sun is low on the horizon. BIG+

Negatives:

- As stevepsd said in an earlier post, "the D-rings are slightly smaller than any other helmet I have used ". I agree.
- Price, I say it is worth it

In Summary:

- Any worries I had about the big visor and wind buffeting at highway speeds are gone
- It works as Arai claims, at least up to 80 mph. I would have tested at faster speeds standing up if my faithful KLR had permitted.
- The visor is removable for VERY high speed riding
- This would be a good lid even on a bike with NO windscreen at average highway speeds

... so says k woo, this 28th day of Feb, 2011

K woo,

Nice write up about the xd3. I tried one on at the IMS show too and liked the fit. I recently bought the Icon Variant and like it, but it's a bit heavier than the xd3. The Variant provides excellent peripheral vision and is super comfortable. Size seems to run a little big (I'm a medium in most helmets but small in the Icon).

Bob

PS I was disappointed in the lack of gear manufacturers (other than helmets) at the IMS show in Greenville, SC. Not sure how it was at other IMS shows, but there were no major gear/apparel mfg's to speak of at the show.......

This was the first show that I have ever been to so I have nothing to compare it to. I did ask some of the vendors how this show compared to other IMS shows. The consistent answer they gave me was that it was average for that size town. Bigger venues, more participation. Would have loved to have seen Triumph and Moto Guzzi there.
