Been looking at several dual sport helmets and have read various reviews. The main 3 I've looked at are the Arai XD-3, Shoei DS Hornet and Icon Variant. Anyone have any experience with any of these or any others? I've been really pleased with all the full face Scorpion helmets I've owned, but looking at one of these "Dual Sport" models.

Yep ... I gotta da Arai Tour X3. 8)

Beautiful bit o kit. Quiet, comfy, good ventilation, clear opening, peak not intrusive, takes internal comms without problems. Nice! Whip the visor off and you can use goggles without a problem.

I like those Arai helmets, but they are $$$$. A buddy of mine races and he only wears Arai helmets at the track.

TBH they fit me best and that's why I stick with 'em. I've got way too many but hey ... can you have too many. I don't think so. I do a crazy amount of mileage and have different lids for different bikes. Arai's come with a long guarantee and they will replace anything. They recently refurbished an Astro R for me .... chin bar padding, strap, chin spoiler all FOC. Worth the $$$'s IMHO.

I had 1st version Arai TourX vintage 2002 that I threw away early this year and replaced it with a Shoei Hornet DS. After the initial new helmet gloss wore off I think my preference is with the Arai. It has a better peak for shade in low winter sun and is generally better put together, I'm forever reattaching fittings to the DS and I havent used it anywere near as much as I did the Arai, cant see it holding up for as long. One good thing the Hornet has is better visor choice (ie can get amber pinlocks etc) when I had the Arai it didnt have the option (probably does now).
all just IMO.

I use an Arai XD and my wife has the newer version, the Arai XD3. Only difference are the visors and the vents shapes. The shells are the same. We've loved them. Many friends have these or the Shoei Hornet and everyone is quite happy with them. They can be quite expensive, but there are plenty of online sources that will knock hundreds off the price. Especially for the ones with graphics rather than solid colors. Once they change the graphics, the previous years go on steep discount. I've seen new Arai XD3 for around $350. The Large and XLarge go fast when they discount them, so you have to be quick, but mediums and smalls are around a bit longer.

If you are comfortable, you can buy used. Buying used helmets is a touchy subject, but if you trust the source and they can honestly say it has never been dropped or crashed in, that is an option. A helmet should be replaced if it is crashed in hard or dropped onto concrete from a tall height. Such trauma can damage the protective quality of the helmet even if there is little or no cosmetic damage. Some people have several helmets and after one season, decide they don't want or need a dual sport helmet, so there can be good deals. Just realize that most manufactures say a helmet should be replaced every 5 years or so because of natural material break-down due to environmental exposure and time and to take advantage of advances in helmet technology, etc. Some don't buy into that train of thought and some do. Up to you. If so, you may not want to buy a used helmet if it is 3+ years old.

As a point to consider, some have reported the Icon Variant helmet has a fair amount of optical distortion. I don't know if that is all of them or just an occasional one, but it seems to come up.

I agree with Macca that the visors are a big plus of these type of helmets. I wear my XD not matter if I'm on a dual sport or street bike. The visor comes in handy for blocking the sun so often, that riding without a visor can be annoying every time the sun blasts me in the eyes. Yes, one could wear sunglasses, but if your screen is dusty, sun hitting it can still make it harder to see than if it was shaded. Like a dirty windshield on a car when the sun hits it.

Yes the Tour X3 has a selection of pinlock inserts including amber. Mine currently has a mid smoke tint looks very sinister on the black lid ::)

I found a barely used SHoei Hornet online for $200 last summer. WHile previously riding my VEE, I thought it was almost quieter than my SHoei Modular Multi-tec.

I have one of the early Arai XD's. I like the looks and visor. Great fit like all Arais. Vents better than a street helmet with more room around your face for airflow, so a nice hot weather helmet or slow-speed helmet. Never used it with goggles, but nice to have the capability.

But.... I think it is noisier than a good street helmet and at really high speed (90 mph+) the helmet is not nearly as aero and has a tendency to flop from side to side with wind gusts - it "weathervanes" a little more in the prevailing wind and gusts. And removing the shield is a total PITA.

So the slower you tend to ride and the hotter/sunnier it is, the more dual-sport helmets take sense (duh). But there are tradeoffs and dual-sport helmets are not as good high-speed street helmets IMHO.

Looks like most folks replied with good thoughts/experiences with Shoei and Arai. I hear really good things about the Icon Variant as well. Has anyone tried one on or gone out for a ride with one? I like the curved shield look and wonder if that helps or hinders visibility in any way?

Yes! When did they start making the XD3 in Hi-Viz yellow?! Maybe I've been hiding under a rock, but this must be new for this year. I see what will replace my white XD in the coming years. I was hoping they would do this after they made the Vector in Hi-Viz. I don't see it on the Arai website, yet, but I do see it for sale at various online retailers.

I have an XD3 and love it. Seems like there are more choices coming out. AGV just released a DS helmet and I expect more main brand helmets to show up.

I am holding out for the new Bell Dual Sport coming out sometime next month. I was told it looks like a XD3 but has a inside flip down visor with the outside visor and a full face flip up.

I cannot find any photos of it yet on the net, but my Yamaha dealer has seen it and is going to carry them. He said you cannot tell it is a flip up, looks cool and is a quality helmet. All the guys at the shop liked it and could not believe it was a flip up. For $199 retail I can wait! :) :)

This is great news. Bell is well on its way back to the top of the market. Watching sprotbiketrackgear's videos from the factory tell the story. Bell tests 2% of their helmets to exceed all safety standards. The transitions visors are also a great option.

I have a question for you XD3/Hornet guys. How to they handle on the Tenere specifically? I had the original XD and on a trip west a few years back, Colorado, Montana and back up to the UP of Michagan. I loved the idea of the XD but I found the buffeting at speed to be more than I could take. I finally stripped the visor off somewhere in Wyoming.

To be fair I was on a Quota and they are known for their poor wind management. I would just like to hear from folks who have actually ridden them on the Tenere.
