Re: Airbag jackets (hit Air, Helite, etc)

I have looked in them, but as of yet not pulled the trigger. I know of a member on here that uses one of the brands and speaks highly of them. Lots of info on youtube, and I know Ducati have their own system.

Hi, yeah, I have seen a lot of stuff in youtube too, but most are older videos and most are EU, ANZ or SA...

Don't want to judge a book by its cover, but most of the websites that sell these jackets look old too, so I am on the fence about pulling the trigger. Also never been crazy about buying stuff online w/o trying it on first.

Re: Airbag jackets (hit Air, Helite, etc)

there doesn't seem to be too many around over here either

I bought the hit air vest - over here these seemed to first appear some years ago for horse riders, and a lot of serious horse riders do now use them

if you are in the market for the vest type you may find more models and better prices at a horse equipment dealers?

the vest I have is fine, good quality and whilst I haven't had to test it out, it is possible to re pack it and fit a new co2 cylinder after an 'off', I preferred the vest as I could use it on a variety of thick and thin jackets (am a year round rider)

I bit the bullet and bought one of the ADV jackets. I'll post some pictures once I get it.

Re: Airbag jackets (hit Air, Helite, etc)

Finally got the Helite jacket and it is really nice. It feels like the BMW jackets I was looking at. It is very well made and comfortable and comes with all the usual protectors in addition to the airbag system. Plenty of pockets (some water proof and some not) and vents. The only piece that is not made of cordura is a section in the back from the shoulders to, I would say, .25 of the way down the back. That section is intended to to expand and provide neck support.

It is an expensive piece of kit, but I think the extra protection from the airbag system is worth it.

Helite Airbag Vest

I recently saw a demo of one of these vests and have to admit I was curious. My wife and daughter were also with me, and they were completely hooked...and of course immediately started working me over. My wife went into a pretty effective line of attack with reminding me of how I totaled my last Tenere, and had that deer jumped enough to hit my body there is no question it would have put me on the road. Yes, I realize bad stuff can happen even to an experienced rider, and it happens in the blink of an eye.

Of course I'm thinking...what about the geek factor? I had to take a little personal inventory at that point. Let's face it, I'm over 50, I work in IT, been married forever, I already wear suspenders when I ride...what geek factor am I really avoiding here? Days of looking cool really only exist in my foggy memory, and are probably a false image anyway.

So I contacted the GM at Romney Cycles, asked him to look at the website for the product http://www.helitemoto.com/ and asked them to consider being a dealer. It took a couple of hours, then he got back to me and informed me they signed up. He also told me they will sell them at at 15% discount from MSRP. I love dealing with Romney.

Yesterday rode out there and picked up the vest. We tried it with the back protector installed in and out. With it in, it does look pretty turtle like. With it out of the vest and using the back protector from the jacket only, the vest is almost hard to notice. It's cut in a way that the vest does not bind and it does appear that it will not block any of the vents from my Klim Badlands jacket. In fact once you have it on, it really is not something you think about.

For some reason the hi-viz of this jacket did not photograph all that well.

Of course everyone has the same thought...the first time I forget to unhook and start to walk away I'm going to set this thing off. I thought so to, until I saw the demo and just how hard you need to pull to get the thing to trigger. I can't imagine a simple walk away will ever trigger the vest. Dropping the bike and getting away from it as it falls, yeah, I could easily see that happening. That will cost you a $25 new co2 cartridge.

I was stopped in a parking lot by an older rider. He wanted to talk about bikes, riding in general, but he never ask about the vest. I don't think he noticed it.

We'll see how this goes. I hope to never give an in depth review of how well it works. Much rather hear about that from others. My wife and I have each totaled a bike. I feel like we've done our fair share of real life gear testing.

Re: Helite Airbag Vest

Thank you for sharing with the Yamaha Tenere members. Romney Cycles is a great group of people that are Helite experts and wonderful to deal with. I noticed an increased amount of traffic coming from the Yamaha Tenere forum so I thought I would jump on here in case there are any questions about Helite's airbag technology.

Thanks for riding airbag equipped! ::008::

Re: Airbag jackets (hit Air, Helite, etc)

Thanks for sharing your feedback about the Helite Adventure jacket. More riders are starting to learn the benefits of airbag technology. There are a few different types of airbag systems available, Helite being one of them. It is a mechanical system that inflates in less than 0.1 seconds with no battery maintenance.

We are happy to answer any questions you might have about airbag protection, or you can view our testimonials page at http://www.helitemoto.com/testimonials/ for rider feedback about their airbag gear.

D.D.
So it sounds like the air bags are reusable.
I was wandering.
Looks really good but we would rather see your wife as the model. :D

Hi Nichole, I'm going to guess the increased traffic is more due to Kawasaki deciding to provide one of your jackets as the main charity prize at the Romney Camp N Ride next month.

My guess is you should be seeing an increase from here, ADVrider, and Stromtrooper as they check out the awesome donation.

By the way, thanks for your super responsive answers on my sizing questions last week. You were right on with your recommendation as confirmed by Heather at Romney.

Is this your way of telling me you're going to make it after all? Hope that means your eye is healing nicely.
