Just a quick note on performance of the vest after a drop of maybe 25-ish mph on a mud road described here:
http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=11146.msg286900#msg286900

Basically I hit the ground twice on my upper left arm/shoulder, first while going forward, then the trailer pulled me up to travel backward, and then the second time sorta as a backward and sideways body slam. The KLIM Latitude jacket with the D30 armor and the vest (with no backpad in the vest) did their job. It was a quick bam-bam and I'm glad it was on mud rather than pavement, but I also believe it would have made a bigger difference in reducing how hard a drop on pavement would feel.

The leash for the vest comes up from between the seat and tank and is just barely long enough that I can stand on the pegs. It's supposed to take a 60 lb pull for the vest to inflate. I heard it pop in the back of my awareness on the first drop and stayed inflated till well after the second drop. There are mud and small scratch marks in two places. One is along the front left vertical reflective stripe to where it meets the bottom of the vest, so I must've landed on the ribs during the first drop going forward, and the second covers the shoulder blade to the bottom of the back. That one I do remember. Big thing is that the only minor soreness after the whole event was to the shoulder I landed on.

Once the vest inflated I definitely had limited head movement, even after everything came to a stop, so the cervical collar idea worked too. It feels kind of goofy after coming to a halt to realize how restricted you are and more than tending to the bike I wanted to unbuckle out of the vest.

There's no real damage to the vest and if you don't look REAL close, you'd never see the very minor scuffs since the mud's been washed off. The replacement cartridge is on order for $25+$5 shipping and it's easy to replace.
Glad to hear you're okay. Thank you for sharing your testimony!

This was user FredBGG on this forum. He got roughed up by the locals and no longer hangs out here. This thread was the culmination of Fred's departure:

http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=17315.0;nowap

Not one of the finer moments for the forum. Glad he's ok.

First off, I'm glad that Fred is OK after his deer hit. A number of members have hit deer and we know all too well how fast it happens. Plus, Encinal Canyon, Mulholland, and the other roads in Fred's area would've been all too easy to go off the side and not be found for a long time.

As for the comment about getting roughed up here, he didn't leave of his own action. Fred repeatedly - and I do mean repeatedly - was told to knock off with the rules violations (and we don't have many!) in his personal attacks and rants that criticized anybody who disagreed. After many warnings, the mods here agreed that his access to this forum needed to be cut and it was.

You guys have done a great job maintaining order around here. I don't know how you and AVGeek find the time since neither of you is retired. Kudos, and thanks.

I did not know that Fred was formally booted, nor was I aware of his many rule violations. Obviously that stuff is handled behind the scenes as it should be.

Didn't mean to dig up old dirt. I felt bad, and a little guilty since I mixed it up with Fred myself a time or two, when he seemingly got run off. But it changes my perspective knowing that you guys were were engaged with him (to no avail obviously). I have to admit that I sometimes miss the drama of a good food fight, a la Dallara, FredBGG, et al, but I also understand that the mods have to TRY to keep everybody happy and a lot of members aren't into blood sports.

Ok, back to more good inflating vest crash stories ...

No worries Bob and thanks for the support. We've only had to cut a couple/few people and then only after it got really painful for everybody.

Dallara has been quiet by his choice. Allan can come across aggressively on the forums, but he is a great guy off-line.

Interesting follow-up to this story. I cruise craigslist a couple times a week just out of curiosity and came across this today:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/mcy/5842771855.html

This is unmistakably FredBGG's Super Tenere that he just hit the deer and crashed on. Who else on planet Earth would plasti-dip their motorcycle orange to be more visible? Fred is a zealot and schoolmarm about visibility and safety and PLBs and modulated headlights and ... Maybe he finally realized that no matter how many defensive measures you employ, there's no way to be 100% safe on a motorcycle.

Also note that there's no mention of said crash in the ad.

He probably still has the BMW K bike.

As for his Tenere, the left bar has road rash visible in the photo and it looks like some type of aftermarket sliders are on the bottom front corners of the boxes. As we all know, it's a tough bike.

That orange is F-UGLY!

Hi Folks
I had one of the Helite jackets with the airvest built in bought for me by my wife for my birthday in June
Something I probaly wouldnt have considered buying my self.
We were attending a motoring festival in Glasgow and they were exibiting there
The guy demostrated the jacket on me ! firing off the airvest to show a few of us how it worked
Fantastic ...! striaghtens you up,goes under the back of your neck, and well below your waist line
You really do have to pull hard to fire it off, you could get off your bike forgetting to unclip it but you would have to go some to accidently fire it
Ive worn it on my old GS1100 over the summer on a 2000 mile trip around Spain
The only negatives is the are heavy off the bike walking around and,may be too hot,in some climates where its always warm !!!!
I ride mainly off road so am used to coming off on the dirt but tarmacs is not as forgiving,
I think it may be that one day they will be the same as wearing a helmet or a seat belt in a car ie. the norm.
May be sales crap, but the guy who sold it ,told me that the french company that make them , make the system for other major brands
They were originally designed for the equstrain market and crossed over to motor cycling
The model I have is a new adventure style jacket with the airbag built in, its water proof and very comfortable as tested in a Spainish thunder storm.

Had a chance to test mine out today LOL. "Older" woman in front of me for about a half mile driving 15mph under the speed limit. Felt very uneasy in trying to pass rode along behind until the stop sign. At the stop I was going left for the turn and was going to just start into that lane and sure enough she just kind of eases over in front of me without signaling and comes to a stop. Okay..... Traffic is all clear and she begins her turn, I immediately pull up and forego the foot down and follow...a bit too close. ::26:: All of a sudden she just STOPS! There is no one in sight for 300yds either direction but she is stopped in the lane and traffic is coming at 50++mph. I hit the brake and as I am already leaned over for the turn and following too close I go down from a standstill, jump away from the bike , and boom off goes the vest! Must say it worked well. Pretty darn constricting. Had to wait a good 20sec before I could be "flexible" enough to pick up the bike. So my fault totally but good test on the vest! I had one extra cartridge at home so went back and rearmed it. Now need to order more. I'm thinking several more..... ::)

Once it goes off, it's kinda like having the first scratch on a new bike. No more worries about when and a bit comforting to know the vest works.
