Heidenhau K60 versus Mitas E07

Finally got new K60 on my tenere after mitas E07 was worn out.

Done about 1500 km on them, on road and off.

Dry tar:
The K60 on tar is definitely better, feels more stable and sure footed. Corners really well and good positive feedback. Does have a higher whine though. The mitas did corner well, had no faults with tar. Got serious whine after about half way through their life.

Wet tar:
The K60 does have a habit of stepping out, and have to be a bit weary on entering corners, once in the corner, found them to be more stable. The Mitas performed well in the wet.

Gravel:
K60 performs well, bike hits traction control easily though, always on tc2 on the gravel. The mitas is delicately far more secure on the gravel, and found it does not hit traction control as easily, but gets going instead. Both are very secure around corners.

Wet gravel:
K60 slips far easier than the Mitas, which is far more secure and does not side step like the K60.

Mud:
K60 is side ways, got to be careful on the throttle. Mitas had very little snake effect. Both cases will have traction control responding.

Mileage:
Have never run the K60 to end yet, the Mitas gave me 8000km, which I am sure the K60 will out do that with ease.

front:
No problems with the front tyres. Both seemed very much the same.

Decision:
Keeping the K60 front, but will be removing the rear and returning to Mitas. The mitas might not give me the mileage, but prefer the performance by far. Anyone in South Africa wanting to buy a good second hand rear K60?

250 kpa, as per tyre spec, and am mostly loaded as well.

Mitas run at 295

Before you take them off, I would suggest you try 262 (F) & 276 (R)
It should fix your issue.

Will try that, however, if I understand correctly, the harder the tyre, the more likely it is to slip out.

Thanks for the review. I was seriously considering the Mitas before I landed on the K60. Interesting that you're going to use the K60 front and Mitas rear; I was going to do the opposite! The Mitas front looked very similar, and cost $30+ less.

I went with the K60 instead due to the mileage, but now that I read your review (and that the K60 is better on pavement) I'm not even considering the Mitas any more.

One of these times you should try the E-07 Dakar, and report if your mileage is any better!

I would have expected advising lowering the pressures for off road use, so I wondered what the reasoning is behind these higher pressures; 38 psi front and 40 psi rear when the K60 tires specify max 36 psi on the sidewalls??

I guess I'd be leery of exceeding the manufacturers maximums.

I would agree, but I talk with Heidenau everyday. They have said its fine... Ive personally been on that pressure for 10K miles.. Tires work fantastic, and have worn fantastic... Working with the manufacture and riding them for 10K, they work great for me...

Sounds good. The max pressure is measured cold and for a specified load anyway, so not an absolute max.

Re: Heidenhau K60 versus Mitas E07

Ok, tried it at 275, slipped consistently. Tc2 was on and the light flickers far too regularly, and I use touring mode when not on tar.

Dropped the pressure down to 230 and the tyre works a lot better.

Although still not as good as the Mitas, but very operational.

Under hard rear breaking, the tyre trends to snake a bit, which the Mitas did not, but is controllable.

My worry now is running the lower pressure on tar and safety. Will it not get to dangerously hot.

Still considering returning to the mitas for the rear.

Yes, mine also did have cracks in front of the treads in the center, at around 2500km. Also called the importer.

They were not deep, bit of a worry, but after 8000km, they had not got any worse.

Friend has them on his, and done around 4000 km, no cracks.

I fitted new Mitas E-07 front and rear. I got caught with a front tyre that loses air and it turns out that its been recalled anyway. Have put a K-60 on the front now till the Mitas is replaced.

In comparison I don't like the feel of the Heidenau, its more stable yes but the Mitas wasn't unstable and turned into corners much easier than the K-60. Havent seen dirt or rain yet.

Took a few pics. of the K60 and Mitas E07 before they were mounted recently for a little comparison. Both sets 150/70-17 and 110/80-19. I will be riding on the K60s and another local rider I will be travelling with is trying out the Mitas E07 for the ride to Colorado this June.
The dealer for Mitas is MX1 Canada and is close by so giving them a try as they are about $100.00 a set less than the Heidenaus. Theres 2 versions of the E07,the standard and Dakar version which has the yellow stripe. It has the same specs. as the K60 as far as tread plys and load rating. Both are rated at 716 lbs rear, with the K60 at 36 psi and the E07 at 33 psi. for the rears.

Stock Bridgestones with the E07s

comparison of both, the E07 front is the same size (110/80-19) as the K60, but does appear to be a bit narrower in tread width

E07 and K60 rears

K60 rear has a little taller sidewall than the E07 rear, and the pic. below is with both against a wall to give an idea of the overall diameter of each

Should be interesting to see how the two compare on the ride.

The E-07 rear will change shape a bit when mounted and inflated.

Bump.

Any ride report on the MITAS tires? Dual Sport vs Dakar vs K60 ride comparision?

How are they wearing against mileage?
