Took the old Heidenaus off yesterday, with 6400 miles on them. 5 mm tread left rear (11 mm new). 4 of 7 mm left front. The front looks great, and could certainly go a lot longer. The rear, while still offering plenty of tread, has these cracks in the casing:

Now, I am blaming myself. When I first mounted these tires I thought the max fill was 42 psi. It isn't. It's 36 psi. I ran them about 2k miles at 42 psi. Won't do that with the new ones. We'll see what happens.

I see a few of those in my K60, at 10,000 miles, but not the slightest bit worried - for one thing, they appeared a lot of miles ago, and never got any worse. For another, compared to the cracks and tears that I had in a Shinko 705, it's nothing...

I would send an email to the Manufacturer and ask them if this is normal. If not, maybe they will cover a new set.

What pressures are you running in your K60's?

I'm running 38 now, but have run as high as 41 when carrying a passenger. So it's possible that higher pressures are responsible.

After just 20 miles or so of gravel I have some cracks in my Anakee2. I think some of that is expected when you hammer on a tire off-road... but, I'm no expert, just guessing.

I saw some pics of the Shinkos. Yours or maybe someone else's. Appeared to be pretty common in that tire. I assume you'd actually have to dissect some of the tires to figure out how badly compromised they are, but I would not knowingly ride farther than it took to get a replacement on something like that.

Thanks, guys. I was a week away from getting a pair of those tires. I guess, I will wait and see if there is more to it than just one bad one.

Which tires, the Heidenau? Don't hesitate (assuming you are going to be doing some off road). They are the toughest tires I've ever come across. Those little cracks have no bearing on the safety of the tire. If they start bubbling up and cracking to the point you can see the carcass... well, that's when I start to worry... This is a front bias-ply Shinko 705 on my Vee. I have the radial version on my Super Tenere, no such problems after 10K.

Yes. K60. My thought is if I have "go anywhere do anything" motorcycle, that I should have tires that let me do that. Stock tires ? ::005::
K60 scouts look like a dream come true. I don't do any offroad yet, but I want to be able to if I have to. I am still babying my bird

Guys, I just finished an Iron Butt 50CC ride in 44 hours and 58 minutes. Between Yuma, AZ and San Antonio, TX I had 104 degrees throughout the whole day with speeds of 80-85 mph. When I started the ride I had over 2500 miles on the K60s. I now have over 6000 miles as I make my way back home.
I wouldn't worry about the tire one bit. I've best them on road and off road.

Ride more, worry less.

Everything I have heard about these tires is good. My purpose in posting this is primarily to warn folk not to over inflate these tires. However, all discussion is good. I was surprised to hear of a second case, also with an over inflated tire. If more cases come up and some are in properly inflated tires then I would conclude there may have been a batch issue, or some other problem. For now, I had no hesitation in mounting a fresh set on both bikes for Alaska. I think these are generally very good tires and a very good value. I would still recommend them.

I would still run it by the manufacturer and let them make the final call. You may have discovered a flaw they were unaware of?

At what tire pressure? I vaguely recall a previous post of yours where you mentioned running higher tire pressure.

I run 38 / 40 all the time... Here is a real quick picture.....

**I also have to say that a week ago or so I did the Arkansas ride, on the way to Oklahoma City I got a flat. I think I got a nail nail in the rear, after a few hours on the high way I think the the head got sanded off and then came out.. I'm pretty sure the tire was very low on my fully loaded bike at 75 Mph for a good long ways. Then at the gas station if came off the rim.. It was also about 200* F.... So there is some undue wear because of the heat and flat tire.. Got the tire back on the bead and fixed the flat at the station and continued on the trip... Its been fine sense then... **

This tire (see picture) has 8600 miles on it. It has cracks/cuts identical to the original poster. I always run recommended air pressure - 36psi. The mixed dirt/rock surface is where I picked up the nail, hence the patch/plug.

This patch has +/- 3000 miles on it and I'm finally getting the tire replaced this Friday.

I hope Mr. Tabasco has some in stock.

Now here are some cuts/cracks. I think its cuts but there are none in tread. Have been like this since shortly after installing. Now have 5500 miles on them. Just trying to wear them out so I can go back to a smoother running tire.
BTW not over inflated.
