Re: Very hard starting today

Hmmm :(

I’ve never had the issue but when I came home from an extended work trip to NZ I tried to start the bike and the battery was flat … well it went flat in about 3.621 seconds ???

I brought a new battery because the old one had been in there since new (let’s say 5 years) … replaced the YTZ12S with a 14S … same size but more cranking amps …

Fitting was relatively straight-forward … checked and then punched the starter … and punched and punched and punched … until the battery was getting fairly flat ::)   

Of course I tried the normal fix of WOT setting … So the next day with a fresh battery … I tried the other options including turning the key on with the kill switch off !!!

Still no friggin go … back on the charger and back to the forum

Further reading confirmed that 4 owners had reported success by pulling the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) fuse … pumping the cylinders dry and starting normally …

There are now 5 owners who can report the success of this strategy ::026::

Without naming names, a couple of us from the forum recently spoke with a Yamaha Regional Tech Rep about this issue and they are setting up a date to look at the forum member's bike. While it would be uncharacteristic to hear anything back and I sure don't expect a EUREKA sudden fix, we can definitely say that Yamaha North America is looking into it.

Re: Very hard starting today

Other things are the effects of wet conditions . our ST IMO has a bug in the coils position, too exposed to the front running ...after a long run in waterstorms i got issues with coils, that were dirty and wet

Re: Very hard starting today

I read the very first post and skipped to the last. The trouble you described in your first post happened to me last December 2015. Replacing the wiring harness solved the starting and stalling issues.

Hi friends, I remember, some time back, somebody mentioned the fact that Yamaha had finally acknowledged the hard start problem on the S10 and I think they said that the problem was a virus in the computer program and that a new program will be available the first part of this year. Does anyone knows anything about it. Thanks

I think it was bogus. Heard about the supposed update before, but this is the first I've heard of a virus!

Search is your friend. Or just checking the stickies in this case. Your thread has been merged into the big one which we know Yamaha is aware of.

Re: Very hard starting today

Like has happened several times in the past, unverified reports that Yamaha has acknowledged the problem and is about to release a fix have never materialized. I think we're back to square one which is that Yamaha probably knows about the issue, but given the small fleet size, cost, and lack of a hard-core safety angle, that they have no intention to issue a fix.

Correction above.

No question that the company is aware, as I was personally part of the conversation. As for intentions, only those inside the company know. I can only relate that it took forever to get the two recalls that I've been part of, and those were safety related.

Re: Very hard starting today

I had a hard start today. My bikes has 40000 miles on it. Havent had but three or four in the 3 years I've had it. I had been riding an hour or so. Pulled over to put on my rain suit. Hit the starter and wouldn't hit. I let it sit 10 minutes and hit it again. same thing. My battery was starting to fade a little. getin nervous by now. Let it sit 10 or 15 minutes and holding it wide open, hit it again. She fired up and almost redlined. I was using the kill switch between cycles to stop the fi prime each time. Well I hauled ass home. I turned the key on and off a bunch of times to make it flood. Couldn't do it. My bike hadnt done it in year or so. It was some bad publicity for s10.

Unusual that that problem was a hot-start one; most of the classic "hard starts" are cold starts.

Partly for this reason, I'd probably replace the battery, especially if it is original and/or the bike sits for periods. A battery that is on its way S is a known contributor to the problem and in any event, you want all the cranking power you can muster if you ever need to crank it out of a flooding condition. A fully-charged, good condition battery should be able to crank the engine briskly for minute or two, although you wouldn't want to do this in one session as it would overheat the starter.

I think the theory that using the kill switch rather than the ignition switch has any effect or that the system "primes" fuel into the cylinders when cycling the key/switch has been completely and thoroughly debunked. Use either as it won't make one iota of difference.

2014 ES Hard Start Issue

Got back from a 1,200 mile weekend trip to the Twin Valley Rally in Virginia last Sunday.
Just before home filled up the tank. Gave the S10 a thorough wash on Wednesday. Started it, took it for a little spin around the block to dry things off and pulled it in the garage.
Took it out today Saturday for a local ride with a buddy of mine. Would not start :-[. Would crank but would not fire...eventually battery showed some stress after numerous attempts. (Pushed it in the garage and took my Honda NC700 DCT out instead)
Went thru a number of posts on the forum regarding hard starting issues.
Had the trickle charger on most of the PM. Finally showed fully charged.
Still would not fire.
Went back to the forum and followed a suggestion.
Opened and vented the gas cap (although it had started twice before since filling it up).
Turned the key with WOT (wide open throttle).
It fired up. Let in run for a while until warm. Came back an hour later and tried it again (without WOT)
It fired up again just fine.

Something get wet during the wash?? Gas tank was not overfilled, no pressure release heard, vent hose looks fine. 10K miles, all maintenance checks complete.
Will leave the charger on overnight and take it for a spin tomorrow. H'mmm, what gives? Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.

What gives is the puzzle that hundreds of us on this forum have been puzzling about for 4+ years now. For some strange reason, a bike that has started fine hundreds of times suddenly won't fire. I doubt opening the gas cap did diddly-squat but who knows. The one thing that is certain is that you should go to WOT as soon as the bike doesn't start normally. Once flooded, any cranking at anything other than WOT just exacerbates the issue.

Re: HARD TO START

I had the dreaded "hard to start" problem on my 2013 S10 (9,500 miles) happen to me yesterday. Looking back I recall that about a week ago I did start up the bike and then quickly switched it off - the classic cause of this issue. When I came to start the bike yesterday the engine would turn over but would not fire up, and after several attempts I flattened the battery. I read up about the problem on this forum (thanks guys) and after charging the battery overnight tried the WOT starting method this morning. This didn't work for me straight off, so I hooked up the bike battery to my car battery to give it some extra omph!. When I tried to start it with a WOT the bike almost fired but didn't quite catch until I twisted the throttle back and forth, this seemed to help pump some fuel through and the bike finally started - yippee! I took the bike out for a 50 mile round trip this afternoon and its now running perfectly. Hope my mention of extra battery help and twisting the throttle back and forth when trying to start may help others caught in a similar situation

Regards to all

Hi friends, it is been some time since the Hard Start subject has been addressed. I had it a couple of days ago but solved with the “Wot” I want to ask members that have newer models S-10 if you had this problem with your bikes or is this a thing of the past? Merry Christmas to all

It's happened a few times to my '15 ES, also needed to resort to WOT to get it started.

Hard start again today. Hadn't started for 3 weeks. Needed to use what and crank in bursts for ages. The petrol smell was really strong. Very disappointing that yamaha haven't fixed this. I'm sure they can but choose not to.

If the bike is not used for more than a week, I'll put the battery on charge before starting the bike. The battery is OEM from 2013. Always fired faithfully.

Yeah mine was on a tender for the whole 3 weeks. The worst hard start I've had.
