I use Ram Mounts exclusively for all my devices and applications. This http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-231ZU works with 1/2" rails. I'll be installing this (I already have it) when I receive and swap out my OEM tall windscreen.
That's what I started with. Once I was done adding an arm and a ball mount on the other end the entire thing was so "flexy" as to be useless on the road.

Hey, that's awesome, I made one very similar. Bought an aluminum clamp collar from McMaster Carr, drilled and tapped for a ram ball. Nearly identical to the pic. It doesn't work any better. On a nice glass smooth asphalt road, it's fine. On anything else, forget it.

I haven't tested mine yet. But if that's the case (where it's useless on anything other that glass smooth asphalt) then I'll be looking for something else that I can use universally for either a phone, etc and not necessarily dedicated to one device.

Be sure to post your findings.

I use the ram mount balls on both handlebar clamps. No vibration issued at all.

I went with the touratech locking mount and made an adapter plate to raise it from stock height si I could see turn signals.
