Has anyone built or bought a GPS mount that attaches to the bar over the dash area on the 2014 Tenere?
I would like to build a mount for my Garmin Montana and I was looking for ideas

I got one for my 2014 Tenere' ES through Twisted Throttle. My Garmin 660 came with a mount. I got the adaptor and the mount for the bar above the dash area. It has a bit of vibration... But works well for me.

I purchased something like this on Ebay for approx $3 to hook my GPS on the central bar of the Madstadt mount. This is pretty similar to the bar on the 2014 ST.

I am using it with a standard Garmin car GPS (approx $120). After 7,000 miles no issue, and the GPS did not suffer from the vibrations. And I am using a shade visor from www.glarestomper.com to make it more legible under direct sunlight.

I hope this helps.
Last point, I noticed that sometimes the adapter (USB power) inserted in electric plug (cigarette lighter) on the ST provides inadequate current hence makes the GPS reboot after a few hours. Invest in a decent adapter not a $2 junk.

If the mounting bar was a larger dia or the bar was square instead of round it would be a lot simplier. The Twisted Throttle mount looks ok but I was hoping to make something smaller and cheaper. The Touratech is just way out of my price range. For that kind of money I could buy a table top milling machine from Harbor Freight, machine out a custom mount, and still have $100 left over.
The ebay mount is more what I am looking for. How small of a dia will it clamp to?

Based on the Ebay post:
Suitable for handlebars (round bar) 3/4 inch to 1 inch (19mm to 25mm) in diameter, rubber spacer strip for smaller handlebars.

The diameter of the bar on the madstadt is 22.75 mm or 0.8955 in, according to my electronic caliper.

Anyway for 3 bucks you can't get really wrong... Piece of advice, the mount on the ring is a bit weak. Unscrew the base, glue it, and put a larger screw. Then no worry to have the assembly going bad.

The 2014 bar is 1/2" diameter.

I'm in the process of fabricating a mount. It's going to work just fine. I need to source a piece of aluminum plate for the final draft.
The clamps are 1/2" P-clamps from amazon, 4 for $20. The cardboard was free ;)

from this mock-up, I learned that I can lower it another inch and that I should reverse the hardware so it looks better.

I like your idea
Lowes and Tractor Supply have small pieces of Aluminum. I went dumpster diving at work and found a nice piece.

Done! Test rode it this morning. Rock steady!
All I need is paint or, preferably, powder coat.

Any guesses where I stole the aluminum? Hey, I still own a KLR - cheap runs in my blood ;)

No unsightly bolts from the front.

Be sure to check that you can see your turn signals while riding. Had to move the one I got from Twisted Throttle twice. But got it now. I sure like yours and it was a hell if a lot cheaper! Looks just as good too!

Thanks, good advice. That is why I made a plastic template first. I went on a shakedown ride and marked it with a sharpie so I could get the final placement exactly right. The turn signals dash indicators are easily visible from my riding position. Even if they weren't, the signals themselves are visible. I can see if they are on pretty easily, except during really bright conditions.
I didn't fabricate this mount to save money. I was just really unhappy with the available options from RAM. Every option I tried using RAM components was in a compromise location or vibrated and wiggled excessively. My setup still has rubber isolation in two locations but appears rock-solid while on the road.

Mounted my radar detector first, then just my Garmin, both shake way too much to be useful. I bought Ram Mount balls for the handlebar clamps. Works great. My only complaint is that Yamaha put a useless acessory bar on my bike. Was really hoping someone would come up with a nice brace to stop the shaking.

I think this could be what you are looki for. I bought one and adapted to my 2012 with an aftermarket adjustable windscreen. The quality is excellent. http://gpsforless.stores.yahoo.net/baseplatei.html
Wow! I consider my google-fu to be pretty good but I never found that page in my search. Nice job.
This, in black, is exactly what I was looking for:

Now that I have the time invested in mine I'll stick with what I built, but I like this better.

That is a good looking mount for sure. I have gotten consumed with my own design and hope to finish this weekend.
If it doesn't work out I'll probably go for one of these

Here is the KYwoodsrider version.
I wanted to make the mount so I would have the flexability to add/remove different devices depending on what type of riding I was doing.
What I call the universial mounting bar is fab'ed from a piece of 1 x 1/4 aluminum with 6mm threaded holes tapped on 20mm centers

I attached the bar with the Billet Industries brackets Tupperware used on his mount

Now I only have to make simple plates to attache different gadets such as GPS, cell phone, Roll Chart, Radar detector, maybe even a cup holder
Heres the bracket with the GPS mount

Here is the GPS and Roll Chart

I need to take a test drive and maybe do a little adjusting. I'll probably paint it black to match the rest of the instruments
