Just an option for those that think the Give Trekkers have TOO Much silver.

I haven't done anything yet other than remove one of the silver top quarter panels but, when I get the bike I'll mount up both the boxes, one w/panels and one w/o and see which I like more.

Option 1:
Just remove the panels and put them aside, will leave a small space where they used to be but from looking at them, there should be no compromise in their waterproof ability.

Option 2:
Paint the silver panels - since the plastic behind the panels is a little shiny, I may find some flat black paint and paint the panels. I'm leaning towards this.

I like where your mind is. I personally like the Trekkers, but from a cosmetic perspective they have too much silver, especially if you're going with a Raven.

If you can get the paint to adhere properly I'd go with option 2. Heck, it might even be cool to get them shot in the factory black color to match. I imagine that will get a little pricey though, and like I said, durability and adherence might be an issue. Givi should offer primed panels for that purpose.

It's just thin aluminum. Not sure a primer coat is necessary but any rustolem paint should work fine. Heck, wonder if they have the Blue.. LOL.. that might be Too much Blue then.. LOL

Might I suggest a texture coating? It would make touch-up a lot easier, and add to the "adventure" appearance.

Sand and prime before adding any color coat. Preparation is everything and will always result in better durability.

You could remove the alum. panels and use Fusion rattle can for the plastic. Not much prep work to do other than a good tape job. This way you would always have the new panels to re-install if wanted to sell. Just a thought..

+1, spray on bedliner would make the bags look rugged.

Interesting Joe. Right now, I don't mind the silver, but I may feel differently when I get all 3 pieces mounted.

Perhaps some pickup bed liner like Rhino Liner or Linex in black

hec, maybe they could match the blue if desired...?

If you decide to paint you should at least use a self-etching primer. Paint generally does not adhere well to bare aluminum. Ideally you would use zinc chromate primer but that stuff is very toxic and tightly regulated. I have had good luck with Dupli-Color self etching primer. Most auto parts stores carry it.

Just one more good reason to have the Raven black bike, eh? (other than being the fastest color):D

I like the etching primer idea, or possibly sandblast them.

In any case prep is paramount. Do it or weep later.

Re: Give Trekkers - Black Out

I wonder what they'd charge me if I dropped the panels off at the Rhino-liner shop on the corner?

Not that I have these cases - but I do like them and could see getting them, down the road.

Re: Give Trekkers - Black Out

The textured coatings might not be a good idea because they are thick. I think Rhino liner sprays between 1/8" and 3/16" or so, which would probably mean issues when re-mounting the panels.

If you really want to give it a go though for cheap, check out the Herculiner that's available off the shelf at automotive stores. It's not bad stuff at all. Usually DIYers make the big mistake of not prepping properly, so it tends to lose adhesion over time. But with such a small area prep shouldn't be overly difficult.

Re: Give Trekkers - Black Out

Yeah, the Rhino lining stuff I had on a truck once and it's pretty thick.

I just took a ride over to the auto parts store on MY ST and got some self etching primer so I'll start messing with the panels. I think I'll hit Walmart and see what textured rustoleum they have, there's some hammered stuff that doesn't look bad but I want to match the other lightly rough plastic as much as possible.

PS... ha, gotcha.

They actually don't look too bad without the panels, and you loose that GIVI on the side.
Too plasticky. My vote is flat black.

Yup...

Update: Just sprayed one set of panels w/self etching primer last night. I'll hit wally world to see what textured flat black paint they have. I don't want it too textured as that would make it easy for dirt to hide in every nook an cranny... I've seen guys use the hammered paint to do wheels and that seems to be fairly easy to clean and pretty tough.

No word on my bike yet so this gives me a distraction.. LOL.. I'll update when I have something good to look at.

Re: Give Trekkers - Black Out

I believe.... WE HAVE SUCCESS!!!

Before - with silver panels removed:

Now, based on suggestions, I got some self etching primer:

I cleaned the surface with alcohol and then applied a couple coats of primer and let dry overnight

Then, went to Home Depot and got some Rust-olem Truck Bed coating

I cleaned the primed surface with alcohol - no, not beer or wine... ugh...and applied one coat of the coating

I let one of them dry which is pretty easy on 105 degree TX heat and put it together carefully.

My friends, THIS is how these bags should have looked in the first place. I'm very happy...
