You guys pissed me off when i opened that post about riding without a helmet. Totally misconstrued. I'm in a dark alley trying to decide between the DR650 or this bike as my transportation. Went to other sites looking for answers. It was either small town shit or downright man haters. Still looking for an honest answer to which bike. I know these posts are made on my part under the influence of too many beers but, it does not take away from honesty (alcohol=part truth, part honesty). Please, if you answer, do not give your politically correct bullshit. Love You, Jimmy

Don't make me have to come down there. I really need to stay here and generate some revenue to pay for the Tenere.

Don't make me do it. R

Helmets are a emotionally charged issue inspiring black and white emotional answers...

Your question about which bike, though is hard for any of us to answer for you. I can only tell you why I decided to trade in a bike I'd only had 6 months and why, in the face of a six month delay (probably getting it when it will only sit in my garage for 4 months) I decided against dropping out;

1) Freeway riding...sometimes I spend 2 or 3 hours on a freeway to get to riding spots (2 lanes, sweepers, etc).
2) ABS, Anti-skid for under $13k
3) Reliability
4) Easy maintenance (I don't want any more chains)
5) Dealer network, including my local dealer who I like a great deal (as opposed to the dealer for my current bike...too many 25 year olds)
6) Ability to ride off-road....which is not it's main draw as it is not an off-road bike, but a bike that can be taken off-road
7) MC Press...great reviews

How much of this criteria matches yours? How much does it differ? What's important to you in owning a bike? I can only afford to keep one...so this would be my one and only.

All I can say about helmets is that I would not have lived past 16 if I wasn't wearing one. If your head hits something even just a little bit hard at very low speed, it doesn't matter how much (or little) the rest of your body is damaged.

Football players (American football) get concussions all of the time at just human speeds, sometimes from just falling and banging their helmet clad head on the dirt.

Ever heard of Derek Boogaard? Professional hockey player found dead a couple of weeks ago at the age of 28? He missed most of last season due to a concussion as a result of a fight during a game. The cause of death has not been determined, but I will not be surprised if they determine that his head injury is the cause.

I have ridden a few times without a helmet, and I do understand the allure. It just feels good zooming down the road or trail without you head encased in that noise dampening, sight blinding thing on your head, but, having hit my head a cagers windshield at 35mph, I can tell you that it happens faster than you can imagine, and at the moment of impact, you will either be glad you are wearing it, or really wish that you were.

Phat luv right back at ya Jim - If alcohol is clouding your life, affecting your perceptions or interfering with building relationships, get some help. There is nothing worse than a good intoxicant that has gotten out of control. I've been there, still go there some days, and I often wear the tee shirt just so people know.

As far as the scooter choice, if you can afford the SupaT and manage the emotional stress of an unclear delivery date, and if it meets your riding interests - I am sure it will be a ride worth waiting for. So far the guys already riding them have very little bad to say and some of these fellows are pretty experienced rides who have ridden quite a few different machines.

hang in there, and don't take any of the spirited discussion here personally -

With unconditional positive regard - Om Peace, troll

Can this topic be moved to the appropriate place? It has nothing to do with the Super Tenere.

From the first post:
"trying to decide between the DR650 or this bike as my transportation"

A little thread drift has occurred, but I think we are still on the right track.

Thankyou gentlemen. Each of you. Yea, I know about concussions. Many moons ago, I was a champion boxer. Trouble is, used to lead with my head too much and fight instead of box. Took me years to learn such a simple lesson which shows my intelligence level. Going to quit posting when I've had a few beers. Makes me look and sound like an idiot. Hell, maybe I am but, At least I've got the good sense to pick the ST as my first bike for the aforementioned reasons. Especially for the safety built into this machine. Plus, one of my daughters said I would outgrow the DR in no time and, she's a hell of a lot smarter than I am. This bike will be my only transportation so, I can wait until November, December, or whenever. Unlike most of you good men here, I don't ride a motorcycle so, I do not know what I'm missing. It has got to be pretty hard for a lot you having to wait for this on paper, marvelous machine that is coming. Still think the post about wearing a helmet was misconstrued. Take Care guys. And, I sincerely think you are a good bunch. :)

JIM yes you are right good bunch of guys on this forum. I don’t post much but I do read every post why I don’t post because being dyslexic it takes me some time to try and get my grammar right. Yes after 53 years I still get my left and right mixed up. Any way why did I choose this bike, I came to Canada in 1972 at the age of 14, And fell in love with this country , its like I cant get enough of this place, did the east coast 3 times on a bike made it to Alberta in 2009. Then there is the USA same thing cant get enough .Did the blue ridge twice Smokey Mountain's, Tail of the Dragon last year and leaving in three weeks for the Grand canyon and traveling north to Vancouver island then back home to Toronto the long way Waterton Lakes National Park, Glacier National Park, Beartooth Pass. So back to the Super Tenere I do own 2 HDs and in 2009 I decided to try that ugly thing they call a WEE STROM. And what a blast that was I put on 20,000 kms (12,000 miles) The first year. Last year I had a cam failure on my 2004 road Glide in Scranton Pennsylvania came back home and continued on the WEE and what a blast that was on the Tail of the Dragon. That’s when I realized I have had enough of the HD I have a bucket list to fill want to see the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, and see all the other 48 states( sorry if I missed one) .I think the S10 will be the bike for me it will help fulfill my bucket list ,Like my dad said a few weeks ago don’t put it off just do it if you don’t you will regret it later on, so in 2011 or 2012 (have to cash in some RSPs) hopefully you guys will see me on the road .sorry if I am boring you guys that’s the booze talking. So Jim buy the s10 come for a visit to the Great White North.

+1 on the good guys on this forum!!

Jim, I hope you enjoy your Super Tenere when you get it. You've made a great choice. I've been waiting for this bike most of my life, but just didn't realize it. It's truly a machine that can take you just about anywhere and haul your camping stuff and gear with no problem.

limey, Best of luck to you in your travels. You've got everyone on this forum wanting to ride with you to all those places you mentioned in your post. Life's too short. Your Dad is right. Do it now while you can. There's more out there than anyone could ever hope to see in a lifetime.

Thanks again for the reassurance guys. Wow, Limey. Heck with our grammar. You sure know how to romanticize being on a bike. Conjures up memories that didn't hold a stick to where you've rode a bike and, continue to live for that matter! :)

There are truly a great bunch of guys here Jim. I feel this forum is closer then ADVrider.com. I found that on ADVrider you have to be careful what you post or ask an opinion on. I got my pee pee slapped on one of my first postings about "riding in the rain" and the topic of ABS came up and I said, you really don’t need abs to ride in the rain. Its great to have, but that wasn't the topic of the posting. And a guy got on my case, but we PM and smoothed things over.
It will only be a matter of time when we all will have the S10 in our garages and the good time will roll

I hope and pray that we can keep this forum on track. Some of the ADV posters are duds, for sure. It's a shame because we're about bikes, not looking to pick fights or anything like that. So far, we've been conflict free and that's a big credit to Venture, the guy that stuck his neck out and started this forum. I think we all need to police this site and ban those that want to bump us off our track. We've been able to agree to disagree so far and it's worked.

We're about riding and all the other stuff that supports it, i.e., camping, maintenance, etc.

Civilized, mutual respect is who we are and what we expect from each other. Our commonality is in our love for motorcycles and the freedom they represent.

God Bless us all and especially our troops that are in harms way.
