I looking for something that lets you set a starting and stopping point of lets say 600 miles. Then you tell the app your range like 200 miles per tank. Then the app will spit out the best places to stop for fuel along your route.

I use FURKOT.COM

You set your fuel range.
It uses google maps, so set you start point and set and end point.
It will mark the range of your tank on the map... you then see where the closest fuel is and mark that as a stop (change icon to fuel pump and set a stop time of 0:15)
Then Furkot will then recalculate the trip with another fuel stop, so set another stop for fuel etc.

Best thing about FURKOT is you can set your trips up, it will break them down into legs between stops with distance and trip time. You can set day start and stop times and it will tell you you should need find a place to sleep. If you are the USA it will suggest for you accommodation.

You can then export these trips into GPS files so they can be imported into you GPS as Trips.

It will take a bit of time to get your head around it. as it will calculate pure tank distance.. it will not suggest where to get the fuel... that is up to you to add that stop.

I suggested it to a few friends who where trip planning straight from google maps... he now loves FURKOT because he can plan trips according to tank fill ups a whole lot easier.

It's an available function on my BMW Nav IV (aka Garmin 660). Personally, I found it more trouble than it was worth when touring in Europe. It takes your concentration once the range calculation is triggered, winds up range anxiety &, at the end of it all, the fuel station data cannot be relied upon. It had me spearing oiff the Autobahn to a village pump that had closed down, when there was a shiny new service station near the next junction not 5 miles on.

So, we just keep a look out once we reach say 160 miles, only using the nav fuel search cautiously if things get tight. Each to their own though; back woods & wilderness environments bring their challenges & probably an aux. fuel cell.

GPS fuel suggestions are a kock up.
I have the Garmin Zumo 590... enter in your fuel range and it then keeps telling me to pull over at Truck Stops for fuel...well in Australia a Truck Stop is a rest area where trucks pull over and park... no fuel. Stupid GPS has fuel icons on the map and it will not suggest these... The GPS nearly ran me out of fuel 3 times when I bought the S10 and rode it home across states 950 km. Fun times!

Via Michelin is handy for fuel locations. i usually jot down the locations where i know i will be and put the phone numbers too. You can always call them to make sure they are there if you need them. Agree that the Zumo660 function is not too good as many are closed or not stations at all.

::026:: for Furkot

I use it for RV Trip itinerary planning. But... I've had to adjust my OCD philosophy. It's way less stressful to just set out and not rush to keep up with a schedule you created before you left. Just really frustrating when you see yourself falling behind, then cutting out parts of the trips to stay on schedule. When planning, keep in mind the need to be flexible with time. I tend to use furkot to connect the dots on the big things I want to do on a trip, but pay less attention to the timing inbetween the start and end date. Let wanderlust take over. Follow the path where it takes you and keep an open mind!
