I would not worry to much about having all three loaded up. Like everybody said just keep the top case light. Its not like you are going to try to carry a stack of wood around! )
How comfortable is the back rest on that case? It doesn't look very thick on the JC Whitney picture but looks better on your bike. The pad needs to prevent any hinges etc. pressing into my wife's back! ::003::tkad said:JC Whitney has a Givi knock off, usually less than $70 shipped with mounting bracket, in 2 sizes, 31l and the larger is around 42l (could not find the rating on the web site, and are on sale now for $60. I had my strom fall against a wall, busting off the windshield and scratching the heck out of this trunk (rest of the bike was fine). the bracket, latches, hinges, etc are fine, not bent or anything. the un-aware would have a hard time telling the difference between this and a Givi if it weren't for the cheezy logo on the top of the case, which I covered up with Yamaha tuning forks. paint the awful orange with duplo black or silver (as I did) and it looks great.

I doubt the back rest is all that comfortable, it is hard plastic, not sure of he angle of it either, if it is parallel to the angle of the passengers back or not. I would guess that if the passenger had a back protector on, it's not an issue. just sitting on it for a minute or two in the garage, probably would not result in a very fair evaluation of it. I have had no passengers other than a tail bag when travelling, the bag had no complaints, it was just happy to be out there.RockyDS said:How comfortable is the back rest on that case? Fair enough. Thanks.tkad said:I doubt the back rest is all that comfortable, it is hard plastic, not sure of he angle of it either, if it is parallel to the angle of the passengers back or not. can anyone else chime in? or maybe on another forum, it was a fairly popular item on vstroms.
As BJP said, it's just a liability disclaimer.Peter said:So, if Yamaha does not suggest using side and top cases together, how can someone use the bike to travel from Chicago to Alaska Two-Up for 25 days?
I would think that paying so much for a bike, that type of riding should not be a problem.
Would it make a difference if used some aftermarket paniers? Tourtech or others?
I ordered one of these top cases in the smaller size. I think it will do just what I want. I'll have to drill some extra holes in the provided mounting plate to attach it as well as paint the orange strip like you suggested. The "Iron Cross" logo has already gone.tkad said:JC Whitney has a Givi knock off, usually less than $70 shipped with mounting bracket, in 2 sizes, 31l and the larger is around 42l (could not find the rating on the web site, and are on sale now for $60. Yeah, I'd say the long-legged geometry is pretty decent insurance against most issues that arise from rear loads.. I think the disclaimer is a 'once size fits all' because some idjit will invariably try something akin to moving gravel 2-up at triple digit speeds...over a washboard serface. Yamaha factory cases - 2 side and 1 top box - fully loaded no problems / no issues whatsoever. ::012:: And may I add ... it was an awesome trip!
