My wife and I attended a two hour back packing clinic a few weeks ago. She and I had a lot in common with the folks putting on the class. We like to backpack and go out in the back woods. I have used several water treatment devices and currently use the Steripen... It is a nice apparatus but like most things it does have a few negatives... During the clinic they showed us a new product that after listening to them, and also doing more homework, I feel is even better and more versatile than what im currently using now. Its called Sawyer water filter. http://www.sawyer.com/ Its small enough to carry in your riding gear and drink straight from a water source... I understand it was developed from the medical side being used in dialysis... The large one is good for 1 million gallons and the small one for one hundred thousand gal.
Just thought it was a really cool product and might help folks that like to ride out in the back woods or like to backpack or camp........... ::008::

What's a trip to the great outdoors without a raging case of giardia?

Gives a whole new importance to the group of having you ride sweep!

In all seriousness, it looks great. i subscribe over at backpackinglight.com and from my years of reading suggestions over there, it's still not a bad idea to carry a few chlorine tabs, just in case.

I've been carrying the small SteriPen for years when I travel and love it. I won't leave the country without it. I like this for the lack of batteries though and will have to investigate more.

I've been thinking of adding one to my camp kit. I haven't needed one yet but as small as they are no reason to be caught without clean water. I found our old First Need one that's probably 25 years old. That's how long it's been since we truly backpacked.

Giardia: the bottom falls out of your world and the world falls out of your bottom. :( I seen it so bad that a fella would drink a Coke and what came out was still fizzing. :))

The nice thing about the Steripen is that it will kill viruses that can get through the Sawyer Mini. However, the Steripen needs those darned lithium batteries that I keep neglecting to charge.

Even so, the Sawyer will be fine for travel and I'm going to pick one up. I was brushing my teeth with soda water the other morning because it was all that I had where I was and this will be great.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for posting this, I was in the market for some lightweight water treatment to keep in my pack and this fits the bill nicely.
