We have several State Forests in Florida that are riddled with Forest Roads and trails through what are called Wildlife Management Areas (or WMAs). These are perfect for dual sport action and will be the initial proving grounds for my Tenere. In my area, West Central Florida, alone we have the Croom, Richloam and Citrus WMAs that are part of the Withlacoochee State Forest. A little further north is Ocala National Forest and up by Tallahassee are the Apalachicola and Hells Tate Forests. Any motor vehicles are allowed on the Forest Roads, so long as they’re tagged, but anything short of a four-wheel-drive or good dirt bike would be crazy.

You’ll encounter many different surface and trail conditions in the forests, although they’re predominantly fluffy sand and during the summers you can expect a lot of water. But don’t expect a lot of elevations; we’re still in Flatistan here. Lots of primitive camping, too. These places are thousands upon thousands of acres and although I’ve been through them a lot with bikes and my Jeep Wrangler, I always take my map and a good compass.

A few weeks ago, I picked up a new leftover 2009 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa and finally got it out in the forest this morning. We were in the Richloam WMA which is about 35 miles to my north, just east of Brooksville Florida. Thought I’d take my camera along for a few photos.

Quick little story on the Sherpa…I was at my Yamaha Dealer (Barney’s Brandon) getting word about the most recent XT delay and saw this lonely guy sitting in the corner. Not exactly the prettiest bike I’ve ever seen...low fender, square headlight, olive drab. But all that made it kind of retro looking and cool. I have other bikes, but I’d just sold my only dually, a BMW G450X, so was on the lookout. I wasn’t looking to buy new, but I leveraged my disappointment in the XT delay into a nice discount, and I guess plus it’s the fifth bike I bought from them.

Hope you enjoyed the photos…

If you find yourself in the area with your dual sport (or your XT when it arrives), here are links to maps of the Croom, Richloam and Citrus WMAs to get you started. Better yet, look me up and I’ll show you around the forests and WMAs.

Oh, and perhaps some of the other Florida guys could add their Forest Road info and pics…

Nice post, Bill! I used to go to Croom with my old RM 250. Florida will teach you how to handle riding in sand, for sure!

twitch, if i were you i might look into the pontoon acessories for all the swamp riding it looks like you will be doing. I didn't think FL had a single forest or dry dirt road in it, only wet croc and snake infested marsh. Enjoy that riding!!! I surely couldn't there!!! I am too damn afraid of snakes to even remotely think of getting in an accident or stranded where i have to walk someplace. Geez already!!!!

Thank's for the pictures and ride report. Still looks like a blast even on flat soil.

Hot damn Twitch! I promised myself I wouldn't say anything anymore after a few beers but, I can't help myself. I grew up here and, have hiked probably every part of the Florida Trail that exists and probably before. Thankyou for sharing this.

Haha…believe me, in a couple months when the rains start that pontoon accessory might be the ticket to get through some of the lower forest sections. Here’s that very same spot as the last photo from a Jeep ride last July or August.

I haven’t run into many alligators in the forests thankfully. The Everglades National Park is another story. This photo from out in the Everglades was just this last December. The gator off in the water is a big sucker. Every time I walked toward the edge to get a closer photo, he’d turn and swim in my direction.

^ Wonder what the fine is if they feed on us. :)

My Sportster is pretty good out in the Glades, but the Super Tenere is going to be a whole lot better. I promise a full Glades Report after I get the Super Tenere.

You’re welcome, Jim…and everyone.

Yup, there’s a lot to do and see out in these forests and parks…hiking, fishing, horseback, biking (pedal type, too). If you like motorsports, it’s real easy to get attracted into these areas with dirt bikes, duallies, atvs, and 4-wheelers because the paved roads, which are mostly straight and unimaginative, will drive you mad!

Thanks for the report, looks like fun. I don't think I want to take my dl out there, as it is geared for a bit more gravel on the road. Sugar sand is funny stuff on conti trail attacks. But others with greater skills have done more with less. If I get a 250 some time in the near future, maybe we could hit some of those trails.

Mods…could I request that this thread be moved into the Southeast Regional Board? It was kind of meant to be more informational than a ride report. thx

Not with those Battlewings! :)

Most of the forest roads are doable though...and it'll do a lot better when I get some Heidenaus on.

It'll be awhile seeing I'm off on a five/six week boondoggle in a couple days. If you get itching for some dirt (I mean sand :) ) in the meantime, Richloam aka Green Swamp is you're best bet (map linked in first post). We actually rode right through there on SR50 on our ride a couple weeks ago. The NW corner above SR50 is pretty tame, but fun...good place to start. East of 471 is too wet right now. Take the bike you're most comfortable with in the sand for starters. A lot of it's tough on the S10 and many 4wd vehicles go in there and tear it up in places making it rutted. Also, the guys over at Dixie Dual Sports have some rides in there once in awhile.
