Ok,

Apologies for another post. I think this bike is really sexy, looks the part and looks built to last. But lots of reviews say that the engine runs flat and is not exciting. Especially compared to the Triumph.

Is it boring?

Will it continue to excite?

Will I still be smilling in a years time?

Mine is now 3 years and a few months old and I may be easy to please but still get plenty of excitment out of this bike. I struggled to keep up in tight stuff a few weeks ago with 2 rocketships, but no one looked at the map and the tar ran out. They back tracked and I had a pretty exciting day. The engine is not scary but is by no means boring.

Sorry, but I had to laugh a bit...

I've owned countless MX bikes, turned thousands of laps on road race bikes, and owned some of the most intense street bikes ever made. I currently own the most powerful motorcycle Ducati (a D16RR) has ever produced as one of the other bikes in my stable along with the Super Tenere... And I only mention that so you know I have a few points of reference.

I've owned my Super Tenere now for over two years and over 33,000 miles, and it is one of the most entertaining, endearing, enjoyable, and enthusiastic powerplants I have ever had the pleasure of riding in all the years I've been riding. And it just gets better and better the more miles you pile on it.

Kind of reminds me of my Honda V-4's along the way... They never *felt* as fast as some of their market competitors, but it's just the way they produced and delivered power. Deceptive, especially the 1986 VFR750F. It had such a meaty, broad, flat torque delivery that it felt like it was downright slow - as it pulled away from bikes like Suzuki GSXR's. The Super Tenere is much like that. It just makes good power everywhere, and has never left me wanting. It's smoother than it has any right to be, too, and it won't be what's holding you back when things get put on fast-forward.

Will you still be smiling in a years time of riding a Super Tenere?

Nobody can really tell how you will feel... But I know I'm still smiling every single mile I get to ride mine. ::008::

Pretty much what AC said...... but you can always change the power anytime you want, to any degree you want..... There is a lot more left inside the that long block...

If your looking for sport bike performance then it's going to be boring. But it's an adventure bike and it is a boring Yamaha after all. But once you get to know it then you will be in on the secret to why many are buying them and it continues to excite for many years. That secret is typically not known by the "experts" that put in a few miles and then do their reviews, or it is but they do not dare say.

The nice thing is that for a few dollars there are several options to make it not boring.

For the umpteenth time, the Tenere doesn't demo well. :)

And bet a million$ that 99.9% of the folks that describe it as boring, are victims of short term exposure.

Some things just take longer to discover their virtues.

A good pair of boots.
A really good pot of beans. (3rd reheat is the real test)
A new pillow.

And this Yamaha Twin.

::026:: As a guy that followed the Yamaha demo truck to 3 different states, I agree completely. It was fine in the demo rides, hardly exciting.

The love of this bike kicks in once you own it and realize just how much you can do with it. After more than 30K Tenere miles the love affair just keeps getting stronger. The bike is so refined on the road, but willing to do nasty things when you take it off. :) What more could you want?

In stock factory form the engine is OK for a 1200, not boring but it didn't put a huge grin on my face. But an ECUnleashed reflash REALLY woke it up, lots of strong drive EVERYWHERE! Lifting up the front end over bumps in third gear. And laughing like a madman the whole time ::008::

While I agree with you on all the above, this one has me wondering. I can't get my wife to ever cook beans, and when she does, we never keep them for leftovers.

Maybe it's my post-bean antics later that night, or maybe she just doesn't like them. Either way, like I said, well put!

I couldn't get a test ride when I bought my S10 as it was February and multiple dealers told me their insurance wouldn't cover test rides outside of Apr-Oct.

After shelling out my cash, and installing my heated gear lead in the showroom, I headed out into the SNOW to ride home.

I pulled out in "T" mode and almost turned right around and begged for my money back.

Then I found "S" mode, and it was "acceptable".

17 months later, I have taken this bike on 3 major trips and have 22k miles on it. After 4 rear tires and countless mods I am hooked.

Yeah, at 13k miles I got a flash and now I have an ECU programming setup. Way before that I helped develop the first aftermarket suspension offerings for the Tenere. I found the stock suspension limited me far before the motor ever did.

Now with both the suspension and the motor "done', watch out. I'm ready for Isle of Man!

F*c* I love Urban Dictionary... Dutch Oven...priceless!

To the OP - yeah, the Triumph engine is more "fun". Yes, it sounds better (subjective), but swap mufflers and tune your own. :)

It's the REST of the Triumph that'll disappoint. It's not as comfortable offroad. It does handle terrain as well. It's seating position and cockpit don't allow as much room to move. Yes, I've ridden both, back to back, and almost bought the Triumph...until they told me the $6,000+ difference in price. Tenere came home and I LOVE it.

I've owned enough bikes to know I'll keep the Tenere....and to know I'd have eventually traded the Triumph.

I haven't ridden the Triumph Explorer but sat on one in the showroom and was immediately struck by how much more top heavy it felt than the S10.

Well, you can't get me to say anything negative about her.
Because now I know her.
I adore her.

But, you guys are still newlyweds and she has barely gotten started at mastering the kitchen. A good pot of beans might be a few years coming.

And just like the Tenere, :) it's worth sticking with it as it just keeps gettin better and better. And I don't mean just her cooking.

I have owned two Triumph 900 and 1050 Tigers, Kawasaki ZRX1200R a bunch of in betweens, road Duc's the Triumph 800XC and 1200 Explorer XC both Triumph's are fast smooth and can do off road and are lovely machines.
The Tenere is a liter bike yes, does it feel like one no but yes and that is what I like about it; It's a Diamond in the rough it's not going to blow you off the back but it will put you in a Zen mode when your riding in the country or on a forestry road it's like an old Air Head on Steroids.
It has stuff you would overpay for on other stuffy be good bikes, it does the job and I feel it will always do it well.
I don't have my ECU flashed maybe down the road I will after I get the comfort and bags in order.
I have rode this machine for a week and I have no doubt it will take me for many road tours that I throw at it.
Is it for everyone?
Only if it's the sort of bike you think you want, it's a do all utility bike for me I am loving it.

You looking for a motorbike or a wife? My wife is really sexy, looks the part is is built to last. She's exciting and keeps me smiling. My motorbike is nothing like her. Its cheap to run, always does what it is told and is reliable. ;D

Yes to all three. But that is subjective. What are you looking to do with the bike? Ride it like a sport bike, single track, long distance iron butt rides... Etc?

I have over 20k and my last 2 bike a 2007 KTM 990 and 2006 Zx-14. I feel my S 10 is faster than the KTM and slower than the ZX. Just did 3 days with a FJR and a Honda Blackbird 1100. We all traded bikes and I enjoyed the other 2 was always glad to be back on the S10. Any speed below 75 and i would easily pull away from the Blackbird and FJR. At 75 it was even and above 90 they both dusted me. But in twisty roads the S10 was much faster and fun.
I have a CJM, Arrow full exhaust system and a PCV with a dyno tune. The only reason it does not scare me is traction control!

I just read a review in the Super Market. Shhh, where the Tenere just won the Adventure bike crown this year, BECAUSE it is a dirt bike mag and they do dirt bike things.

They reckon the Tenere motor etc works really well off road and is great everywhere, where you need it on road. It misses out on the 0.1% of the time you are drag racing.

But off road it is the motor to have in that class, which basically I agree with.

Another dirty mag I read said something along the lines of "the motor can just be left alone to wing up and down through the braod torque range, and is really predictable in the slippery stuff. All things considered one of the best big motors off road for mere mortals"

I suppose that means that the bike was set up for mere mortals and if you are comfortable with being a mere mortal it works really well.
